Abstract

The anchored kerb stone system comprises preformed kerbs 1 with a broad base that are restrained by stiff angle geosynthetic strips 3 which are connected to geosynthetic strips 4 which extend under the kerb stone and the adjacent road 5. The angles are preferably provided with holes for receiving temporary pins 7 for restraining the system during construction.

ACHORED KERB SYSTEM
Background to the Invention
The present invention relates to kerbs used to delineate the edges of paved vehicular trafficked areas such as roads and car parks. Kerbs also provide shoulder support to vehicle duty pavements. Kerbs are subject to occasional lateral forces from vehicle tyre contacts.
The problem Traditionally many herbs are formed from stone, clay or precast concrete units and require an in-situ concrete bed and haunch to provide a supporting foundation and restraint against vehicle tyre contact displacement respectively. The in-situ concrete work is significant in terms of time, labour and materials.
The invention An object of this invention is to provide a simpler system of herb support and restraint than an in-situ concrete bed and haunch.
The invention consists of a preformed herb with a broad base for stability against overturning forces generated by vehicle wheel contact. The kerb is held on it back face by an angle strip anchored into the pavement. The achorage provides lateral restraint against vehicle wheel contact forces and support to the upper pavements layers.
Invention detail A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in Figure 1 that shows a diagrammatic vertical cross section through the Kerb System.
The Precast Concrete Kerb I is designed so that Angle 2 is in a range of 30 - 60 degrees so that loads applied to the face of the kerb by contacting vehicle tyres are generally transferred to the Stiff Angle Restraining Geosynthetic Strip 3, which is anchored by a connected Geogrid Strip 4.
Upper Pavement Layers 5 are laid over the Stiff Angle Restraining Geosynthetic Strip 3. Geogrid 4 mobilises the restraint of the Upper Pavement Layers 5 weight by friction and hence anchors the Kerb 1 against displacement by vehicle tyres contacting with the pavement side of the Kerb I. The Geogrid Strip 4 is designed by reinforced soil design methods to be of a width sufficient to provide anchorage to resist the design load applied to the face of the kerb by a vehicle tyre. The depth of the Upper Pavement Layers 5 must be sufficient to prevent rotation of the Kerb 1 when a design load is applied to the face of the kerb by a vehicle tyre.
The sequence of construction for the system is that the pavement layers are laid up to the underside of the Geogrid Strip 4 and Stiff Angle Restraining Geosynthetic Strip 3.
The Geo,rid Strip 4 and Stiff Angle Restraining Geosynthetic Strip 3 are then laid on the underlying bed and located with Temporary Pins 7 driven through holes provided in the StiffAngle Restraining Geosynthetic Strip 3. The Kerbs are then laid on a shallow Sand or Mortar Bed 6. Once the subsequent pavement layers 5 are laid, the Temporary Pins 7 are removed. If landscaping or paving is required behind the kerb, it is then laid.
