Abstract

A yarn (10) for a textile, wherein the yarn (10) is 1000 to 3000 denier in size and comprises a multiplicity of fibres (12, 14, 16) including anti-bacterial fibres (16) and micro-fibres (14). The fibres (12) may be either polyester fibres or spun fibres. The anti-bacterial fibres (16) may be polyester fibres carrying ionic silver. The micro-fibres (14) may be a combination of polyester and polyamide. The yarn may be used for towels.

Description

2411 1 82 Anti-Bacterial Textile The present invention relates to an anti-
bacterial textile and a method of manufacture thereof.
Hygiene is becoming increasingly important in today's society.
Fibres and fabrics of medical clothing and bedding are often impregnated with anti-bacterial compounds to prevent the spread of bacteria.
Reference to a "yarn" in this description refers to a multiplicity of fibres that are assembled together. .
: .''. The choice of fibres that are assembled into a yarn depends on the . . . :, textile product that is intended to be manufactured. The Applicant's earlier applications, Korean applications nos. 10-2003-0078983 and 10 :'''. 2003-0078985 disclose methods of assembling fibres together to produce :'': high-absorption chenille yarns.
The present invention sets out to provide a textile which has absorbent properties while also having anti-bacterial properties.
By "textile" it is meant, although not exclusively, towels, baby bibs, bathmats, doormats, and clothing such as bathrobes, socks and cleaning cloths.
Reference to "towel" is meant to include, although not exclusively, any textile that is used to dry such as hand towels, face towels, kitchen towels and tea towels.
Reference to "anti-bacterial" throughout this description is intended to include anti-fungal and, to some extent, additional anti-microbial properties.
In one aspect, the invention provides a yarn for a textile, the yarn being 1000 to 3000 denier in size and comprising a multiplicity of fibres including anti-bacterial fibres and micro-fibres.
Preferably the textile is a towel.
Preferably, the anti-bacterial fibre comprises a polyester fibre impregnated or otherwise embodied with ionic silver compound.
Preferably still, the micro-fibre comprises a polyamide fibre. By "polyamide fibre" it is meant a polyester/polyamide (nylon) fibre (also i; ,. ' referred to as "NP fibre").
In a second aspect there is provided a yarn for a textile comprising an assembly of anti-bacterial fibres, micro-fibres and spun (staple) fibres.
By "spun fibre" it is meant polyester fibre, cotton fibre, viscose fibre, polynosic fibre or the like.
Preferably the yarn has a ratio of anti-bacterial fibre, micro-fibre and spun fibre of 1:1:2.
Preferably the spun fibre comprises polyester.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing which is an enlarged schematic drawing showing part of a yarn constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the Figure, a yarn 10 constructed in accordance with the present invention essentially comprises an assembly of two polyester fibres 12, a micro-fibre 14 and an anti-bacterial fibre 16.
Each individual polyester fibre 12 has a denier size of approximately 3 denier.
The micro-fibre 14 consists of a combination of polyester and polyamide (nylon) and each individual fibre has a size of approximately 0.2 to 0.3 denier.
The anti-bacterial fibre 16 consists of a polyester fibre that has been impregnated or otherwise embodied with ionic silver. Each individual antibacterial fibre 16 has an size of approximately 2 to 3 denier. Silver powder is added to polyester melt which is then cooled and extruded as a fibre. The percentage of ionic silver by weight of the anti bacterial fibre is approximately 0.5%.
The textile material which is constructed (woven or knitted) from yarns 10 produced in accordance with this description has an overall composition of approximately 90% polyester, of which 20% is anti bacterial (i.e. has ionic silver) and 10% micro-fibre.
It is clearly envisaged that the polyester fibres 12 could be replaced by spun (staple) fibres to produce a slightly different textile material which may be appropriate to other applications.
The above described embodiment has been given by way of example only, and the skilled reader will naturally appreciate that many variations could be made thereto without departing from the scope of the present invention.
