Description

CHAIR WITH A GET-UP AID
Background of the Invention
1. Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a chair with a get up-aid for assisting a person sitting in the chair to get up.
2. Description of the Related Art
A chair is almost a necessity in daily life and provides a seat for rest.
Nevertheless, getting up from the chair is a problem to disabled having weak legs.
To solve this problem, a torsion spring is attached to a seat of the chair for springing the seat upward when the buttocks of the person in the chair leave the seat. However, the instantaneous upward movement of the seat under the action of the torsion spring might cause injury to the person. Further, a typical chair has a seat that is too wide to allow the disabled to immediately get up from the seat.
Summary of the Invention
In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, a chair includes a base including a front end and a rear end, a seat mounted above the base, and an operative mechanism. The operative mechanism includes a telescopic rod that is adjustable in length. The telescopic rod has an upper end pivotally connected to a front section of the seat. At least one supporting rod has a front end pivotally connected to the front end of the base and a rear end pivotally connected to a rear section of the seat. When the length of the telescopic rod is increased, the seat is elevated and supported by the supporting rod and the telescopic rod, thereby straightening legs of a person sitting hi the chair.
In an embodiment of the invention, the operative mechanism includes a motor to which the telescopic rod is coupled. The operative mechanism further includes a button electrically connected to the motor for activating the motor to adjust the length of the telescopic rod. At least one armrest is attached to a side of the seat, and the button is mounted to the armrest.
The front section of the seat has a rear end that is pivotally connected to a front end of the rear section of the seat, and the front section of the seat has a front end that is pivotally connected to an upper portion of the front end of the base.
The telescopic rod has a lower end that is pivotally connected to a lower portion of the rear end of the base.
Other objects, advantages, and novel features of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 5 is a side view similar to Fig. 4, illustrating getting up of the person.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the chair after the person has gotten up from the chair.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment
Referring to Figs. 1 through 4, a chair in accordance with the present invention generally comprises a base 1, a seat 2, and an operative mechanism 3.
The base 1 has an appropriate height and comprises a frame including a front frame section (not labeled) and a rear frame section (not labeled). Two pivotal portions 11 are respectively provided on two sides of an intermediate portion of the front frame section, and a pivotal portion 12 is provided on a middle of a lower portion of the rear frame section. Further, two pivotal portions 13 are respectively provided on two sides of an upper portion of the front frame section.
The base 1 is covered by a covering 15 (Fig. 3), and the base 1 may be rotatably mounted on a swivel device 14, allowing rotational movement of the base l relative to the ground.
The seat 2 includes a substantially rectangular frame 20 having a front section 21 and a rear section 22. The front section 21 includes two pivotal portions 211 in a rear end thereof, and the rear section 22 includes two pivotal portions 212 in a front end thereof for pivotal connection with the pivotal portion 211 of the front section 21. A front end of the front section 21 includes two pivotal portions 212 for pivotal connection with the pivotal portions 13 of the base 1. The rear end of the front section 22 has a pivotal portion 213, and the rear section 22 includes two pivotal portions 222 on a rear end thereof, which will be described later. A backrest frame 23 is attached to the rear end of the rear section 22. Two armrests 24 are attached to on two sides of the seat 2, and a cushion 25 (Fig.3) is mounted on top of the seat 2.
The operative mechanism 3 includes two supporting rods 31, a telescopic rod 32, and a control device 33. Each supporting rod 31 includes a front end 311 for pivotal connection with an associated pivotal portion 11 of the base 1. Each supporting rod 31 further includes a rear end 312 for pivotal connection with an associated pivotal portion 222 of the rear section 22 of the seat 2. The telescopic rod 32 is coupled to a motor 5 that can be activated to adjust an overall length of the telescopic rod 32. The telescopic rod 32 has a lower end 321 S pivotally connected to the pivotal portion 12 of the base 1 and an upper end 322 pivotally connected to the pivotal portion 213 of the front section 21 of the seat 2.
The control device 33 is mounted to one of the armrest 24 and has a button 331 electrically connected by a wire 332 to the motor 5. Thus, when the button 331 is pressed, the motor 5 is activated to adjust the overall length of the telescopic rod 32.
Referring to Fig. 4, when a person is seated in the seat 2 of the chair, the supporting rods 21 are located in a horizontal plane above the base 1.
Referring to Figs. S and 6, when the person is intended to get up from the seat 2, the button 331 is pressed to activate the motor 5 to turn, thereby moving IS the telescopic rod 32 in a length-increasing direction; namely, the telescopic rod 32 becomes longer. Thus, the front section 21 of the seat 2 pivots upward and forward. The rear end of the rear section 22 of the seat 2 is elevated upward and supported by the rear ends 312 of the supporting rods 31. Thus, the seat 2 is elevated to straighten the legs of the person, and the center of gravity of the buttocks of the person moves forward, allowing the person to get up and leave the seat 2 that is reliably supported by the telescopic rod 32 and the supporting rods 31.
In a modified embodiment of the invention, the front section 21 and the rear section 22 of the seat 2 cannot pivot relative to each other. Further, the front end of the front section 21 of the scat 2 is not pivotally connected to the base 1.
Thus, the seat 2 can still be elevated and reliably supported by the telescopic rod 32 and the supporting rods 31 when the person presses the button 331 and gets up from the seat 2.
Although the invention has been explained in relation to its preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that many other possible modifications and variations can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed. s
