Abstract
240,900. Friedmann, L., Blauhorn, E., and Deutsch, H. July 1, 1924. Giffard injectors; regulating or controlling action; nozzles.-Relates to boiler-feed injectors, of the general type described in Specification 180,628, adapted to be operated by exhaust and live steam simultaneously, or by live steam solely, and consists in automatic steam-pressure controlled means for shutting off the exhaust steam branch when live steam alone is being fed, in the form of an exhaust-steam valve co-operating with a valve motor-member operable by live steam, each of which,forms a stop for the other when it is resting on its seat. Other features are the provision of a live-steam, supply throttled for feeding the exhaust steam nozzle and an additional live-steam supply for applying steam pressure to the above automatic off means, together with distributing means therefor. The injector has exhaust-steam, water, overflow and delivery chambers 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively, exhaust steam nozzles 8, 10 in series, live-steam nozzle 7; and water nozzle 9. A valve 15 in the exhaust steam supply passage 13 co-operates by means of the lever mechanism shown with a valvemotor piston in the live-steam supply passage 17 in such manner that one of them is compelled to be seated when the other is open. In addition to the supply of live steam by the pipe 22 to the live steam nozzle 7, there is an auxiliary livesteam supply 20 conducting to the exhaust steam chamber 3 and the vicinity of the exhaust-steam nozzle 8. When the live-steam admission-valve 29 is open steam passes to the live-steam nozzle and also either to the valve-operating member by a pipe 16 or to the auxiliary live-steam supply pipe according to manual adjustment of a valve 21. Live steam also has access by a passage 23 to a lift type of valve 25 controlling a passage 26 leading, to the water supply, and when this valve is displaced it opens a spring-controlled watersupply valve 27, the feed-water coming from above by a pipe 28. In operation, if the injector is required to function when the engine is not running, the hand valve 21 is positioned as shown whereby, the steam-admission valve 29 being open, live-steam has no access to the valve-operator 18, but flows by the main live-steam pipe to the live-steam nozzle 7, simultaneously opening the water-admission valve 27. Live steam entering the pipe 20 is throttled and reaches the exhauststeam nozzles 8 and 10 at reduced pressure; at the same time the passage of the steam through the nozzles diminished the pressure at the non- return valve 15, so that the weight of the parts aided by a spring readily maintains the valve closed in the passage for the exhaust-steam. When the engine is running, the alternative disposition of the hand valve 21 cuts off the supply of throttled live steam and by displacement of the valve-operating member 18 the exhaust steam passage is opened at the automatic. valve 15. In. a modification there is direct contact between a rod carried by the valve-operator 18 and a liftvalve controlling admission of exhaust steam, and the condensate forming in the pipe 16 may discharge into either the steam space of the ejector, or into the exhaust-steam supply passage 13, Fig. 1, or to the atmosphere. The arrangement of the admission of live steam to the appropriate nozzle and the simultaneous opening of the wateradmission valve may be varied slightly. Specification 240,697 is referred to.
