Abstract

The fine subdivision of organic or inorganic dyes or pigments in aqueous suspension is retained on drying by intimately mixing with a resin or a solid fatty acid, for example by mixing an alkaline or other solution of the resin or fatty acid with the colour suspension and precipitating by acid or other precipitant, or alternatively by fusing the materials together or by grinding them in a colloid mill. The preparations may be used as such or the admixed body may be eliminated before use by means of solvents without destroying the subdivision. In examples a 20 per cent aqueous paste of a dyestuff, such as that obtained by coupling diazotized m-nitro-p-toluidine with acetoacetic acid anilide, is well stirred with an alkaline solution of a fatty acid, colophony, copal or an alkali-soluble artificial resin obtained, for example, by condensation of an aldehyde with a phenol or carboxylic acid, and the resulting mixture is acidified with hydrochloric acid, filtered, washed and dried; and aqueous paste of the above dyestuff is well stirred with an alcoholic or other solution of colophony, shellac, artificial resin, fatty acid or the like and the precipitation assisted by salting out; the same dyestuff is fused with colophony.
