Abstract

A blood infusion apparatus comprises a filter chamber 11 within which blood can be irradiated by an ultra violet (UV) light source 16 located adjacent the chamber. The chamber has a plurality of internal walls 13 which divide the chamber into parallel fluid channels 14 and which prevent collapse of the chamber. One surface 15 of the chamber is thin enough to permit UV light to pass through without scatter. Nozzles 17 allow connection of the chamber to the infusion lines 1. The infusion set is for single-use and is discarded after use. The apparatus may be constructed from polyethylene.

DESCRIPTION
ULTRA VIOLET LIGHT INFUSION SET
This invention relates to a sterile, disposable infusion (fluid administration) set designed to include an Ultra Violet Light Filter chamber that will enable blood passing through and contained within the infusion set chamber to be exposed to ultraviolet light from a source adjacent or close to the infusion set such that the ultraviolet light enters the chamber without scatter. This invention is designed primarily for Ultra Violet Light Blood Irradiation treatments.
Ultra Violet Light Blood Irradiation is a treatment process that has been in the public domain internationally for over 70 years. In this process blood is extracted from a patient, exposed to ultra violet light, and then returned to the patient in a closed loop sterile environment. The exact medical procedure has been in the public domain internationally for over 70 years and is undertaken under sterile conditions, and involves a number of steps: 1. An ordinary infusion set is spliced with a sterile blade and each cut end is then joined to an opening nozzle on either side of a glass or polyethylene chamber, also termed a cuvette.
2. The infusion set - cuvette system is then filled with a saline solution containing chemicals to prevent blood clotting.
3. Each end of the infusion set is clamped tight.
4. The spike of the infusion set is inserted into a sterile vacuum saline rinsed bottle.
5. The patient is cannulated and this cannula is attached to the needle adaptor of the infusion set.
Page 2 6. First the clamp closest to the patient, and then the clamp closest to the bottle, are released.
7. The source of ultra violet light is activated.
8. The bottle is placed on ground level to facilitate blood flow via both the negative pressure in the bottle and the force of gravity, and blood flows from the subject through the infusion set - cuvette system into the bottle. During this process, the cuvette rests adjacent the source of the ultra violet light, and the blood in the cuvette is exposed to a measured quantity of ultraviolet light.
9. Once a certain amount of blood enters the bottle, a needle is used to ease the vacuum, the bottle is hung from a stand, and the blood is resumed through the infusion set - cuvette system, still resting adjacent to the ultra violet light source, into the patient via the original cannula.
10.0nce the blood has flowed back into the patient, the treatment has been completed and the infusion set is disconnected from the patient.
There are practical difficulties with this procedure that this invention aims to reduce: 1. Splicing a sterile infusion set in half, and then forcing each end over the nozzle at each end of the cuvette is time consuming and difficult to perform under sterile conditions.
2. Glass cuvettes are difficult to re-sterilise, and re-using these are frowned upon in this era of blood transmitted diseases such as hepatitis and HIV infections.
3. Polyethylene cuvettes are disposable, and therefore preferred to be used, but are not as strong as glass cuvettes and therefore tend to Page 3 collapse because of the negative pressure in the bottle and this is especially true when dealing with blood of high viscosity, as occurs with severe disease.
This invention, termed an Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set, comprises of a standard disposable for single use only infusion set into which is incorporated an Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber. The entire system is sterile (non- pyogenic fluid path), and made of polyethylene or any other material that is safe to come into contact with blood for re-transfusion purposes. The Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber may be of any shape, size or structure, and may be incorporated at any point between the two ends of the infusion set, but at least one surface must be thin enough and of a material that is able to allow ultra violet light from an adjacent or nearby source to penetrate without scatter. Within the Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber are walls dividing the chamber up into smaller parallel passages, and arranged such that blood from each passage is equally exposed to ultraviolet light. The walls within the chamber prevent collapse due to negative pressures and high blood viscosities within the system. The exact site along the tubing of the Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set at which point the Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber is incorporated may vary.
This invention therefore overcomes the difficulties mentioned earlier: 1. The Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set has An Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber fitted during manufacture and this obviates the need to perform this activity during the procedure; 2. The entire system is disposable for single use only; and Page 4 3. The system does not collapse with high negative pressures and highly viscous blood.
A preferred embodiment of the invention, termed an Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set incorporating an Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber, will now be described, with reference to Figure 1. With regard to the description and to the Figure, it is important to note that: 1. Figure 1 is not drawn to scale, but rather to emphasize the Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber of the Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set.
2. The description and terminologies used here, apart from that describing the Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber, are standard in the infusion (solution administration) sets and medical disposable manufacturing industry, and therefore will not be further explained here.
The Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set, as do most infusion (fluid administration) sets intemationally, comprises of Polyethylene tubing 1 with Spike 2 (covered with Protector 3), finger Guard 4 and Chamber 5 on the one end of the tubing, Needle Adaptor 6 (covered by Protector 7) and Injection Site 8 at the other end of the tubing, with Flow Control Clamp 9 and Y-injection Site 10 in between the two ends of the tubing. The Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set provides a sterile, non-pyogenic fluid path. It is for single use only and must be discarded after use. However, the Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set differs from the above standard infusion set in that the Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set Page S also incorporates an Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber 11 between the two ends of the tubing.
The Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber 11 is rectangular in shape, 170mm 35mm 4mm, and made of polyethylene and comprising top 12 and bottom parts joined by an electro thermal process. The top part 12 is thicker and injection moulded, with walls 13 extending down to bottom part, thereby creating parallel channels 14 within the Chamber 11. The number of Channels depends on the number of walls, and there are two walls and therefore three Channels in this Figure. The bottom part 15, through which ultra violet light from source 16 may penetrate without scatter, is a 150p film and to be placed adjacent to the ultra violet light source 16. Nozzles 17 at each end of top surface are attached to middle of Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set lines.

    CLAIM
THE ULTRA VIOLET LIGHT INFUSION SET
The Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set, primarily designed for Ultra Violet Light Blood Irradiation Therapy (also known as UBI Therapy), comprises of a disposable for single use only standard infusion (fluid administration) set into which is incorporated an Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber. The entire system is sterile (non-pyogenic fluid path), and made of polyethylene or any other material that is safe to come into contact with blood for re-transfusion purposes. The Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber may be of any shape, size or structure, and may be incorporated at any point between the two ends of the infusion set, but at least one surface must be thin enough and of a suitable material to allow ultra violet light from an adjacent or nearby source to penetrate the surface without scatter, thereby exposing the blood flowing or static in the Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber to ultra violet light. Within the ultra violet light filter chamber are walls dividing the chamber up into smaller passages, and arranged such that blood from each passage is equally exposed to ultraviolet light. The wails within the chamber prevent collapse due to negative pressures and high blood viscosities within the system. The Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set is therefore designed to make the administration of Ultra Violet Light Blood Irradiation Therapy easier to perform because the Ultra Violet Light Infusion Set already incorporates the Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber and there is therefore no need for the administrator of the treatment to perform this task. Therefore, the sterility of the procedure is increased.
Further, the walls in the Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber prevent collapse as occurs with other chambers due to negative pressures in the system and high Page 7 viscosity of diseased blood. The Ultra Violet Light Filter Chamber was therefore designed with the highly viscous blood of people suffering from severe diseases and infections, such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Fibromyalgia and HIV Infection, in mind.
