Abstract

A padded cushion is affixed to the frontal area of a vehicle seat using a plurality of Velcro (RTM), strap (C or B) or pad fastenings. The cushion is shaped to support the occupant in the back, shoulder, head and neck areas. The cushion has a rigid inner core that may be made from fibreglass or carbon fibre. A padded cushion overlaps the core the two parts being glued or bonded together. A fire retardant cloth material covers the whole cushion. The straps may be adjusted to move the cushion up or down on the backrest. The cushion has a recess (E) at the top to support the occupants head.

Description

ANTI-WHIPLASH SEAT
The seat is to give extra support for the head and to maintain neck back and head alignment in the event of a rear end collision. (road traffic accident.) The units comprise of a velcro pad with straps that fasten the pad to the car seat.
This is supported by straps that loop around the headrest mounts.
The main back rest panel is then positioned at the required height and the attached velcro pad is secured to the strap on velcro fastened to the seat.
The height is correct when the person who is sitting in the seat can rest their head into the recess at the top of the panel.
When in use, the weight of the person maintains the fixed position of the support panel and especialy in the event of another hitting them from the rear.
The top recess in the panel, because of its shape, will help to guide the head into this recess and keep back neck and head in alignment.
Soft edging of the panel maintains comfort and safety. The whole assembly can be easily transferred to a different car if needed.
All measurements are only approximate.
ANTI-WHIPLASH SEAT
A fibreglass or carbon fibre basic panel of about 34 inches in height and about 14 inches in width is needed as the base. (See fig 1 page 3) At the top of this panel is a hole about 4 inches in diameter with a slight dishing effect. (See fig 3 page 3) To this panel is glued or bonded, a foam that is shaped to the contours of a persons back. This needs to be about I/: inch thickness minimum.
The foam overlaps the base panel by about i/. inch to give a soft edge. (See fig 2 page 3) The whole, front and back, of the assembled units is then covered in a fire retardant cloth material and at the top a smooth recess is formed for head location.
Fig 4 the rear of the panel can have either, straps mounted to secure the assembly to the car seat.or. A separate velcro panel secured to the back of the base panel and this will fasten to a velcro panel that is strapped to the car seat.
The height on the seat is adjusted by moving the base panel up or down and relocating onto the velcro on the car seat. (See fig SA-5B page 3) + (fig 6 page 4) Once set up, this system will alleviate the head being thrown too far backwards in the event of a rear end collision.
It will also add to driver comfort due to the shaping of the backrest.
