Abstract

A mains adaptor, designed to plug into a standard electrical socket, is fitted with an on/off switch which may be operated remotely with an infra red handset.

Description

240771 3 IR (Infrared) Switching Unit The IR switch is a device designed
to plug into a standard 240v electrical socket to offer remote control of that outlet via infrared remote handset, allowing any appliance inserted to be remotely turned on or off.
My drawings do in simple terms allow us to visualise the following. The unit is vaguely square in shape, like a two-way plug adapter, and made primarily of plastic. It features a three-prong plug socket inlet, just like the wall socket, which accommodates a standard plug, as used by virtually all electrical appliances.
The IR switch effectively sits between the appliance and the electric socket and acts as an on/offinterface, using a simple internal 0/1 switching gate.
With the device plugged into the wall and looking at it straight on, underneath (or above) the three-prong inlet facing us a is an infrared sensor, which accepts instructions from a separate remote control. The instructions are basically on or off, which opens and closed the internal switch, and hence allows or stops supply of electricity to whatever electrical appliance is connected.
The remote control is small, discreet and stylised. Originally, it will be a simple two button affair. Later it may be adapted to offer four "channels" of infrared band, to allow four IR switches to occupy four sockets of a typical four-way electric adapter. This will allow user control of four different IR-regulated devices from one remote handset. I have not included a drawing of the remote handset, as it can be made in any style, size or colour Practical uses for the IR switch could include: Turning on of electric fan heater or coffee maker in a bedroom, before one gets out of bed.
Turning on or off of corner lantern or lamp if one needed to get up in the middle of the night.
Turning on of toaster, kettle or sandwich maker while one is preparing food in another area of kitchen or dining room.
Turning on or off of socket-mounted room fragrance device.
Turning on or off of four appliances simultaneously, when switch is placed before a four-way adapter.
Turning on or off of four appliances independently, when switch is placed in each socket of a four-way adapter.
Turning on of PC or printer while one is about to finish a previous task Page one

Claims (1)

  1. The claims 2 The IR (infrared) switch is a remote-controlled on/off gate
which allows any electrical appliance plugged into it to be turned on or off by an infrared remote control handset, by allowing or cutting the electrical supply through the unit and into the connected appliance.
