Abstract

A tethering device for restraining items of luggage, shopping bags or carry-out food bags placed on a seat of a vehicle comprises a length of cord 2 or a strap with two connecting devices 4, 5 for releasable connection to the luggage or bags and a position locking device 3 for limiting the movement of at least one of the connecting devices 4 along the length of the cord or strap. End stops 1, 6 are provided at each end of the cord or strap to prevent the connecting devices and the position locking device from becoming detached. The connecting devices 4, 5 may take the form of hooks designed to attach to the handles of a bag or piece of luggage. In use, the connecting device 5 is attached to bag and the cord 2 is passed around the seat's head restraint. The second connecting device 4 is then attached to the bag and the position lock 3 is moved along the cord to brace the second connecting device 4 and make the bag secure. In alternative embodiments, one of the connecting devices may be fixed to the position lock (3, fig 3) or to an end stop (5, fig 2).

Description

Passenger Seat Luggage Restraint This device is an automotive accessory.
The device is used to prevent Hand Luggage, Shopping Bags or Carry Out Food from falling over/off the vehicle passenger seat.
Many people transport luggage, particularly shopping and carry out food on the passenger seat of their vehicle. This practice often discourages the driver from manoeuvring their vehicle correctly as any sudden changes, particularly breaking, will spill the cargo onto the floor.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple restraining device to make the passenger seat luggage secure during normal motoring. This will allow the driver to concentrate on driving safely. When not in use the device can be easily stowed in the glove compartment.
The basic structure of the Passenger Seat Luggage Restraint is now described.
The Passenger Seat Luggage Restraint is comprised of a length of cord or strap onto which are attached two luggage connectors and a position locking device. End stops are at each end of the cord/strap prevent the other components from becoming detached. The position locking device will limit the maximum distance between the two luggage connectors. The luggage connectors may take the form of hooks designed to attach the luggage carrying handles.
Figure 1 shows the basic design of the device. In this version the two luggage connection devices are snap hooks, and are free to move along the cord or strap when not in use. The position locking device is a cord lock To operate, the cord end connector (5, Fig. 1) is attached to the goods (1, Fig.5). The cord/strap (2, Fig. 1) is then passed up the seat, around the back of the seat head rest and back down to the goods. The second connector (4, Fig. 1) is then attached to the goods (2, Fig.5). The position lock (3, Fig. 1) is then moved up the cord/strap to brace the second connector and make the goods secure (3, Fig.5). When in position (4, Fig.5) the cord end connector (5, Fig. 1) is braced against the cord end stop (6, Fig.l) and the variable position luggage connector (4, Fig. 1) is braced against the position locking device (3, Fig.1). The support is provided be looping the sap/cord (2, Fig.l) over the back of the seat's head rest.
In more elaborate versions of the same device, some of the components may be integrated together. In Figure 2 the cord end luggage connection device is fixed at the cordlstrap end (5, Fig.2), so becoming both the luggage connector and the cord end stop.
I n Figure 3 the variable position luggage connector has been integrated with or attached to the position locking device (3, Fig.3). Figure 4 shows a passenger seat luggage restraint where both of these modifications have been incorporate. These alternatives are considered to be more integrated versions of the same basic design shown in Figure I. The luggage connection devices in later models may be replaced by, or optionally attached to other types of luggage connectors. For example a spring loaded clasp type connector may be provided to attach to bags that have no handles.
The device may in some cases be supplied along with a seat matt to protect the car seat from any leakages from the luggage, particularly where the luggage is a carry out meal. r

Claims (8)
