Abstract

A compression set packer tool (10) includes a mechanism to prevent premature setting of the packer. The mechanism comprises a dog (16) which protrudes into recess (38) on body (12) in a first position, thus locking sleeve (14) and body (12) against relative movement. During operation, the tool (10) is pulled out of polished bore receptacle (32). The dogs (16) are biased radially outwards by springs (70). The tool is then lowered such that a surface (78) of the dogs contacts the top of PBR (32), holding sleeve (14) in position. Further lowering of the tool moves body (12) with respect to sleeve (14), thereby moving shoulder (40) on body (12) towards shoulder (42) on sleeve (14) to compress the packing element (18).
