Abstract

A pelvic floor stimulation device 10 comprises a housing 12 shaped at least in part to represent a penis, and an electrical muscle-stimulation device 14 mounted in the housing 12. In use, the shaped housing 12 provides sexual stimulation, and the electrical muscle-stimulation device 14 stimulates and exercises the pelvic floor muscle group to strengthen the urethral sphincter closing mechanism and reduce stress incontinence.

Description

A PELVIC FLOOR STIMULATION DEVICE
This invention relates to a pelvic floor stimulation device, and to a method of using the device.
It is relatively common that women can suffer, at some time, from urinary stress incontinence. It is more common following childbirth and with increasing age.
Stress incontinence occurs due to the weakening of the pelvic floor muscle group, which consequently affects operation of the urethral sphincter.
Numerous treatments have been proposed. These involve, amongst other things, surgery, non-invasive manual exercise regimes, the use of manually operated invasive equipment, and electrical muscle-stimulation apparatus.
One particular type of electrical muscle-stimulation apparatus is The Rio Liberty Pelvic Floor Exerciser manufactured by Dezac, of Cheltenham, England. The Rio Liberty comprises a device locatable in the user's vagina which, when activated, emits various electrically generated frequencies to stimulate the pelvic floor muscle group. The various frequencies emitted have been found not only to strengthen the pelvic floor muscle group, but also to promote muscle endurance, which is another important factor in controlling incontinence.
However, none of the above-described treatments provide a particularly pleasurable experience, and thus there can be a tendency to forget or skip a treatment.
The present invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a pelvic floor stimulation device comprising a housing shaped at least in part to represent a penis, and an electrical muscle-stimulation device mounted in the housing, in use the shaped housing providing sexual stimulation and the electrical muscle-stimulation device stimulating and exercising the pelvic floor muscle group to strengthen the urethral sphincter closing mechanism and reduce stress incontinence.
Preferable and/or optional features of the present invention are set forth in claims 2 to 8, inclusive.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of using a pelvic floor stimulation device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, the method comprising the steps of: a) inserting the shaped housing into the vagina of a user to a position where the electrical muscle-stimulation device contacts or is adjacent to the pelvic floor muscle group of the user; and b) operating the pelvic floor stimulation device, so that the shaped housing provides sexual stimulation and the electrical muscle-stimulation device stimulates the pelvic floor muscle group to strengthen the urethral sphincter closing mechanism and thereby reduce stress incontinence.
Preferably, the method further comprises a step (c), subsequent to step (b), of performing pelvic floor exercises.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view from one side of one embodiment of a pelvic floor stimulation device, in accordance with the first aspect of the invention; and Figure 2 is a view from another side of the device shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a pelvic floor stimulation device 10 which comprises a forked housing 12 and an electrical musclestimulation device 14 housed in the housing 12.
The housing 12 is shaped to at least in part represent a penis and a finger, and is thus formed, at least in part, of any material suitable for vaginal and anal insertion, typically being a rubber or plastics material.
The pelvic floor stimulation device 10 also comprises a vibration mechanism (not shown) housed within the housing 12. The vibration mechanism includes a control unit 16 located in one end of the housing 12 and which allows the degree of vibration of the housing 12 to be selected and controlled.
The electrical muscle-stimulation device 14 utilises the electrical arrangement of The Rio Liberty Pelvic Floor Exerciser, and includes two contact elements 18 transversely positioned opposite each other and facing outwardly from the housing 12.
The two contact elements 18 are located partway between the two ends of the housing 12 at a position intended to enable the contact elements 18 to contact the pelvic floor muscle group of a user when the housing 12 is fully, or substantially fully, inserted into the user's vagina.
However, the electrical muscle-stimulation device 14 can be any suitable electrical arrangement, and can include one contact element, or more than two contact elements. In the case of two or more contact elements 18, the contact elements 18 may be spaced apart from each other in the direction of the longitudinal extent of the housing 12.
The electrical muscle-stimulation device 14 is arranged to output a relatively short periodic intermediate tetanic frequency along with a periodic high frequency doublet' discharge through the contact elements 18. These frequencies act to strengthen the pelvic floor muscle group by causing repeated contraction and relaxation. A continuous low frequency is also output through the contact elements 18 to promote muscle group endurance.
By reducing the period of exposure to the tetanic frequency and increasing the period between exposure, for example using a 10:50 ratio duty cycle, the intensity of s the tetanic frequency can be increased resulting in the tetanic frequency reaching a larger area of the pelvic floor muscle group.
In use, the pelvic floor stimulation device 10 is first connected to a power supply (not shown), being either an energy storage device, such as one or more batteries, inserted into the housing 12, or a mains power supply connected via an adaptor and input jack. The shaped housing 12 may be lubricated using any suitable lubricant, and is then inserted into the vagina either before or after energisation of the vibration mechanism. The shaped housing 12 is inserted to a comfortable position and so that the contact elements 18 of the electrical muscle-stimulation device 14 reside adjacent to, or in contact with, the pelvic floor muscle group.
The vibration mechanism is set so that the shaped housing 12 provides pleasurable sexual stimulation, and the electrical muscle-stimulation device 14 is simultaneously operated to stimulate and exercise the pelvic floor muscle group' resulting in strengthening of the urethral sphincter closing mechanism and thus reducing stress incontinence.
The control unit 16 of the vibration mechanism may also control the electrical muscle-stimulation device 14. Additionally or alternatively, the electrical muscle- stimulation device 14 can be remotely controlled using a hand-held controller (not shown). The electrical muscle-stimulation device 14 can be provided with resident memory (not shown) allowing one or more preset programs or routines to be contained therein and selected.
Manually performed pelvic floor exercises can also be performed at the same time as the electrical stimulation of the pelvic floor muscle group.
The electrical muscle-stimulation device may be electrically arranged to correspond to other types of electrical pelvic floor stimulation devices, instead of The Rio Liberty Pelvic Floor Exerciser.
Although the shaped housing is forked to allow for simultaneous vaginal and anal stimulation if desired, the shaped housing can be of any suitable shape, forked or otherwise.
Furthermore, the vibration mechanism may be dispensed with. In this case, the control unit, if provided in the housing, simply controls the electrical muscle stimulation device.
It is thus possible to provide a pelvic floor stimulation device which not only treats urinary stress incontinence, but also provides a pleasurable experience.
The embodiments described above are given by way of example only, and other modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
