Abstract
240,238. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Starkweather, G. A.). June 26, 1924. Thermionic valve circuits. - In an alternating current system having means independent of but for supplying current to a load, in such a way that the current remains substantially constant for a given potential independent of fluctuations in the supply voltage, there is provided additional means in combination with a resistance in series with the load for selecting one of a number of optional current values and at the same time for causing each of the values when selected to remain constant notwithstanding fluctuations in the supply voltage. In the form shown in Fig. 1 and applied to an X-ray tube 14, the supply 11, 12 is con. nected in series with the primaries 18, 20 of a main and an auxiliary bucking transformer 15, 16 respectively, the secondaries 19, 22 of which are in series with the filament 13. The transformer 15 is saturated at a voltage somewhat below normal and the transformer 16 has air-gaps 23, so that, for one particular value of filament current, fluctuations of the supply voltage will be neutra.- lized in the secondary circuit. To effect this neutralization at other values of filament current, a variable resistor 30 and inductor 31 are placed in series in the load circuit, and their proportions are so chosen that the current determined by the position of the regulating arm 32 is unaffected by changes of supply voltage. The Specification contains curves in illustration of this. The insulator transformer 26 serves to protect the supply from the high potential system 28, 29. Since the transformers neutralize the fluctuations for one value of load current, then by utilizing the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 and comprising a resistor 36 in series with the load and a resistor 37 in parallel, the load on the secondaries can be kept at this particular value and the filament current can be varied if the proportions of the resistors are suitably chosen.
