Abstract
A water repellent composition containing an alkali metal alkylsiliconate, xanthan gum, an alkylene glycol, and optionally water, can be used to provide mineral building materials, particularly those that are porous, such as masonry building blocks and concrete with water repellent properties. A preferred alkylsiliconate is potassium methylsiliconate and preferred alkylene glycols are mono-ethylene or mono-propylene glycol. An alkali metal hydroxide, for example potassium hydroxide, may also be included in the composition.

À..... materials themselves water repellent, and organic silicon containing compounds have found particular use for this purpose.
Examples of organic silicon compounds which have been proposed for the purpose include alkali metal alkylsiliconates, silanes, oligomerized siloxanes and polymeric siloxanes, all of which ultimately react chemically to form silicone resins within the building materials after they have been applied thereto, and solutions of silicone resins from which the solvent is left to evaporate. l - 2 -
A particular problem with the use of organic silicon compounds is, however, that it is often difficult to retain them within the building materials until the final silicone resin as been formed, this usually being associated with the relatively low viscosity of the organic silicon compounds which are applied.
One proposal for overcoming this problem is to make aqueous emulsions having a mayonnaise-like consistency using selected organic silicon compounds dispersed in water, for example the composition sold by Wacker Chemie under the designation Wacker BS Creme 'C' which is an aqueous blend of an alkyl alkoxy silane and a siloxane oligomer. However, such compositions have been found to be insufficiently viscous for some applications, for example when injected into horizontal holes in masonry, and so it has been proposed to mix them with thickening agents such as bentonite to increase the viscosity of the compositions.
Whilst generally satisfactory thickening can be achieved with most conventional thickening agents and many of the various types of organic silicon compounds referred to above, this is not the case with alkali metal alkylsiliconates, where unstable À. - À À compositions frequently result, for example with bentonite used À.
À..... to thicken aqueous alkyl alkoxy silane/siloxane oligomer emulsions. À À. À À À.
À. The present invention seeks to overcome or at least ameliorate this problem with alkali metal alkyl siliconates. À - À Àe A.-
À..... According to the present invention there is provided a water repellent composition comprising an alkali metal alkylsiliconate, xanthan gum, an alkylene glycol and optionally water.
Compositions in accordance with the present invention are generally stable suspensions which can be applied to porous masonry materials to provide them with water repellent properties. Similar compositions using known thickening/gelling - 3 - agents, such as hydroxymethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, and modified bentonite hydrosols, in place of xanthan gum have surprisingly been found to be unstable. In addition to their good stability, compositions in accordance with the present invention can be prepared having relatively high viscosities, for example such that they cure within horizontal holes in masonry before substantial run-out from the holes.
Compositions in accordance with the present invention preferably include an alkali metal methylsiliconate as the alkali metal alkylsiliconate, the alkali metal preferably being potassium.
The alkali metal alkylsiliconate is preferably present in an amount of from 3 to 30 wt% of the composition, and more preferably in an amount of from 10 to 25 wt% of the composition.
In addition to the alkali metal alkylsiliconate, commercially available alkali metal alkylsiliconates usually include substantial amounts of the hydroxide of the alkali metal, for example of the order of 40 wt% of the solids content of the aqueous commercially available material. Compositions of the present invention will, therefore, usually contain an alkali metal hydroxide in addition to the alkali metal alkylsiliconate. À. À Àe
The xanthan gum is preferably present in the compositions in an À Àe :. . amount of at least 0.1 wt% of the composition, but in general it À will be present in an amount of up to 2 wt% of the composition. À.
: À. The alkylene glycol in compositions of the present invention À..generally serves to assist dispersion of the xanthan gum in the compositions. Preferred alkylene glycols include mono-ethylene glycol or mono-propylene glycol, and preferred amounts of alkylene glycol are from 1 to 10 wt% of the composition.
Compositions in accordance with the present invention can be prepared simply by mixing the various ingredients together.
However, it is generally preferred to disperse the xanthan gum in the alkylene glycol and then to mix the resulting dispersion - 4 - with a solution of the alkali metal alkylsiliconate in water, additional water being added to adjust the amounts of the various components to the desired dilution in the compositions.
The following Examples are given by way of illustration only.
All parts are by weight of 100 parts of the final compositions.
ExanHe 1 Xanthan gum (1.08 parts) was blended with mono-propylene glycol (3.8 parts), and the resulting blend was mixed with a solution of potassium methylsiliconate (47.6 parts in the form of a mixture of 28 wt% of the siliconate and 19 wt% of potassium hydroxide with the balance water), and water (to 100 parts).
The resulting mixture was a stable gel which resisted flowing out of horizontal holes drilled in vertical porous building blocks.
Examples 2 and 3 (comparison) Compositions were prepared in a similar manner to that described in Example 1 except that the blend of xanthan gum and À.- À... mono-propylene glycol was replaced by approximately 2 wt% of either hydroxymethyl cellulose or carboxymethyl cellulose. À
À The resulting compositions were not stable and could not be satisfactorily retained in holes drilled in vertical porous À. building blocks.
Example 4 (comparison) A composition was prepared in a similar manner to that described in Example 1 except that the blend of xanthan gum and monopropylene glycol was replaced by a modified bentonite hydrosol to provide the resulting composition with a bentonite solids content of about 4.5 wt%. - 5

Claims (10)
- Claims 1. A water repellent composition comprising an alkali metalalkylsiliconate, xanthan gum, an alkylene glycol and optionally water.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the alkali metal alkylsiliconate comprises an alkali metal methylsiliconate.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the alkali metal alkylsiliconate comprises a potassium alkylsiliconate.
- 4. A composition according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the alkali metal alkylsiliconate is present in an amount of from 3 to 30 wt% of the composition.
- 5. A composition according to claim 4, wherein the alkali metal alkylsiliconate is present in an amount of from 10 to wt% of the composition. Àe ÀeÀ
