Abstract
A trench section comprises a Y-shaped profile allowing different utility service lines to be laid in parallel whilst adhering to the vertical and horizontal spacing regulations of each service regulators. The sections have covers and are installed underground, preferably under a street pavement, are waterproof sealed and can be interlocked with further sections to expand the trench network. A removable platform may rest on an interior ledge of the trench allowing equipment and staff to work within it. Monitoring means, which may comprise a water alarm, a gas leak detector and an electrical fault locator, may be included in the trench, along with controls, valves, stop-cocks and meters traditionally associated with each of the utility lines. A former part may be provided for insertion into the trench to secure cross-over pipes and wires. A series of apertures may also be formed in each side of the trench sections allowing lines to be connected to the customer.

Description
UTILIDOR
During recent months, utility providers have been attracting much adverse interest due to the amount of disruption caused by repair work in streets, the subsequent noise nuisance to citizens and disruption caused to traffic flow.
Utilidor is an invented portmanteau word comprising 'utility' and 'corridor'. This description is exactly what the system is - a single sunken profiled lightweight Y shaped concrete trench and cover combination, constructed from interlocking waterproofed sealed sections located under the street pavement and designed to accommodate the secondary distribution networks of all the usual utility services for residential, commercial and industrial developments. It is essentially a multi utility service trench (MUST) These services include water (potable and non-potable), gas, CHP (combined heat & power), LX, telecoms and street services such as street lighting, and possibly fire mains. It does not include sewers.
The profile of the trench is designed in such a way that each of the utilities has the traditional horizontal and vertical separation required by each service industry, yet retaining the easy access needed to install, repair, modify or make additional connections to the pipes and cables to both sides of the trench. It is intended that controls, valves, stopcocks etc from the different services to the customer may also be located within the trench, as well as meters for individual properties served.
Furthermore, due to the sectional nature of the trench cover, it is possible to quickly and quietly locate and gain access to any problem which might arise or be identified below ground level with any of the utilities. A 'Trench Monitor' will be provided which may include (for example) an alarm to indicate the presence of water within the trench, a gas leak detector and an electrical fault locator.
A removable platform is provided which rests on an interior ledge to allow equipment and staff to work in the trench.
Services are provided to each side of the trench across an insert Former' to which the cross-over' pipes and wires are secured (where necessary).
Utilidor is intended primarily for the multi-lay installation of utility services in newbuild sites on brown- or green-field developments and will greatly facilitate the initial design and implementation of service supply systems.
One final objective would be to bring the management and operation of the Utilidor uncle, a single management company.
It will take considerably greater effort and investment to reinstall existing utilities in existing urban areas and streets within the Utilidor system, but one day it may become financially viable and socially acceptable to do so.
Claims (1)
- Claims- Utilidor - Must 1) That a comprehensive system allowing multiutilities to be laid within a single service trench in the street environment under the jurisdiction of a local authority in the UK is currently not available 2) That the 'Y' profile of the trench allowing both the vertical and horizontal separation of traditionally incompatible' services enabling them to run in parallel is unique 3) That the operation of such a trench in the public domain by a single operating company or a local authority has not hitherto been attempted in the UK 4) The'former' system of enabling the securing of pipes and cables as they cross to service ducts on opposite sides of the trench 5) The integration of service ducts into the Utilidor trench!
