Abstract

240,211. Hall, D., Kay, J. H., and Hall & Kay, Ltd. June 19, 1924. Filters with lose filtering-materials.-Water from an inlet, pipe 5 passes into a rotatable cylinder 13 mounted in a, container 4 and provided with a perforated longitudinal strip 15 on which a layer of gravel 16 rests. The water flows through the gravel 16 and the perforations into the space between, the cylinder and the container where it escapes through an outlet pipe 6 leading to a three-way cock 7. When it is desired to clean the filter the cock 7 is closed, a cock 12 controlling a drain-pipe 11 communicating with the interior of the cylinder 13 through a chamber 10 opened, and the cylinder rotated in its bearings by a hand-wheel 19. Rods 17 extending along the cylinder stir up the gravel which is prevented from entering the inlet and the outlet pipes by baffles 20. After a sufficient number of rotations, the perforated portion of the cylinder is brought to the top, the cock 12 closed, and the cock 7 turned to bring the container into communication with a waste pipe 9 through which the water in the container and the matter in suspension therein flows. The cylinder is then turned back to the normal position and the cock 7 turned to permit the flow of water through the ordinary passage. A paddle or similar device, that may be operated independently of the cylinder, may replace the rods 17.
