Abstract

An Incorrect Fuel Filling Prevention Device has a fuel-type Sensor Unit 10 fitted into a Fuel Filler Pipe 110 which senses if the incorrect type of fuel is being delivered to the Fuel Tank 90. Signals from fuel sensor 10 are transmitted to a Controller Unit 30. Controller Unit 30 controls a Valve Actuating Mechanism 60 which closes a Valve 70 to prevent fuel filling the Fuel tank 90. Controller Unit 30 also activates Audible and Visual Warning devices 100 to warn the fuel filling operative of their error of trying to fill the Fuel Tank 90 with the incorrect type of fuel. After a predetermined time the Controller Unit deactivates warning devices 100 and valve-actuating mechanism 60 in order to allow the Fuel Tank to be filled with the correct type of fuel.

Description

i 2401 975 Incorrect Fuel Filling Prevention Device This invention relates
to an Incorrect Fuel Filling Prevention Device Vehicles that run on liquid fuels often have their fuel tanks filled by their users with the incorrect type of fuel. This refilling with the incorrect type of fuel can cause damage to the engine and the engine delivery system and renders the vehicles engine inoperable until the fuel tank has been drained of the incorrect type of fuel and the and fuel delivery system and fuel tank flushed of the incorrect fuel and the system filled with the correct type of fuel.
The inoperable vehicle filled with the wrong type of fuel often has to be towed from the filling station to a garage for the fuel tank to be drained and the whole of the fuel delivery system flushed before the correct type of fuel is put into the fuel system so that the vehicle and its engine can be used again. This is a costly and inconveniencing experience for the vehicle user and the vehicle cannot be used until it has been done.
This device can be fitted into the fuel filling system of a vehicle's engine fuel tank to prevent significant quantities of incorrect fuel being delivered into the fuel tank by the fuel filling operative and so preventing the inconvenience of being towed for the fuel system to be flushed and cleaned and not making the vehicles engine inoperable.
Incorrect Fuel Filling Prevention Device A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagram in which: Figure 1 shows in diagram form the general layout of the system and the positioning of the components in the Incorrect Fuel filling Prevention Device.
Referring to the diagram the device comprises of a Fuel Type Sensor 10, Connecting Wires 20 that are connected to the Controller Unit 30. When the fuel is being delivered to the Fuel Tank via the Fuel Filler Pipe 110, the Fuel Type Sensor 10, fitted in the Fuel Filler Pipe 110 detects in the correct type of fuel is being fed into the Fuel Tank 90. If the incorrect type of fuel is being fed the Fuel Type Sensor 10 sends a signal to the Controller Unit 30 via the Connecting Wires 20. The Controller Unit 30 sends a signal to activate the Valve Actuating Mechanism 60 via Feed wires 50to operate the Shut-OffValve 70 to the Shut- OffPosition to prevent the delivery of the incorrect fuel into the Fuel Tank 90. At the same time the Controller Unit 30 sends another signal to the Audible and Visual Warning Elements/Device(s) 100 via Connecting Cables 40. The Audible and Visual warning Elements/Device(s) 100 indicate to the fuel filling operative that a Hazard Condition has been reached, that the type fuel being delivered is incorrect and that filling cannot proceed with this type of fuel.
After a preset time the Controller Unit 30 deactivates the Audible and Visual Warning Elements/Device(s) 100 via Connecting Cables 40, and also deactivates, signals the Valve Actuating Mechanism 60 via Feed wires 50 to operate the Shut-OffValve 70 to the Open Incorrect Fuel Filling Prevention Device Position, so that fuel filling with the correct type of fuel can continue. The Valve Actuating Mechanism 60 and the Shut-OffValve 70 can be fitted with a manual reset mechanism so that the Shut-Off Valve 70 can be manually set to the Open Position, so that fuel filling with the correct type of fuel can continue.
