Abstract

A holder for a cigarette packet is disclosed, the holder having at least one portion adapted to obscure part of the surface of the cigarette packet when positioned in the holder.

Description

2401 770 A Holder for a Cigarette Packet The present invention relates to
a holder for a cigarette packet.
In many countries, cigarette manufacturers are required by law to include health and safety warnings on cigarette packets. These warnings are often very prominently displayed, and unattractive to the purchaser of the cigarette packet.
According to the present invention, a holder or cover for a cigarette packet is provided, the holder having at least one portion adapted to obscure part of the surface of the cigarette packet when positioned in the holder. Preferably, said portion is adapted to obscure a heath warning displayed on the cigarette packet.
Having bought a packet of cigarettes, the purchaser places the cigarette packet in the holder, thereby concealing the health and safety warning. The outer face of the obscuring portion may also serve a decorative or advertising function.
In a preferred embodiment, the holder consists of a resilient clip comprising a base and a pair of arms projecting therefrom adapted to receive and grip the cigarette packet.
The base of the clip is preferably of substantially the same width as the base of the cigarette packet. The arms of the clip are preferably inclined inwards and must be moved apart in order to receive the cigarette packet.
The arms of the clip may dorm front and rear panel portions adapted to obscure at least part of the front and rear surfaces, respectively, ol'the cigarette packet. The clip may also be provided with further panel portions, adapted to obscure at least part of the side surfaces of the cigarette packet.
The clip may be made of any suitable resilient material, such as metal or plastic.
In an alternative embodiment, the holder consists of a case, sleeve or bag adapted to hold the cigarette packet, which may be provided with suitable fastening means to e ee. A; s'-e enable it to retain the cigarette packet. Altennatively, the case may be maple of or comprise an elastic fabric or other material, which must be stretched in order to accommodate the cigarette packet.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure I is a front view of a cigarette packet holder according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a view of the undcrsde of the holder of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view of the holder of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a side view of the holder of Figure 1 when holding a cigarette packet.
Figures 1 to 3 show a cigarette packet holder consisting of a clip 1, having a pair of panel shaped arms 2, 3, joined to and extending from a base 4 of the clip. The two arms 2, 3 are roughly perpendicular to the base 4 of the clip, but incline slightly towards each other such that the free ends of the arms arc slightly closer together than the ends joined to the base of the clip. The clip is formed as an integral unit, and is made of resilient material.
Figure 4 is similar to Figure 3, but shows a cigarette packet 5 positioned In the holder 1.
As shown, the base 4 of the clip I is designed to be of substantially the same width as the base of the cigarette packet 5 which it is intended to hold, such that when the cigarette packet 5 is placed inside the clip, the two arms 2, 3 are urged outwards and a close fit is achieved between the base and anns of the clip and the base and front and back faces of the cigarette packet.
The angle of inclination of the arms of the clip, and the material from which the clip is made, should be chosen so that the clip will hold onto the packet firmly without crushing or otherwise causing significant damage to the packet or its contents.
' ;e ete t#q '. .. :e Optionally the inner surface of the arms (ie. the surface in contact with the cigarette packet) may be roughened or provided with one or more small teeth in order to improve the grip of the clip on the packet.
The dimensions of the panel shaped anus are such that the majority of the front and rear faces of the cigarette packet below the lid of the packet are obscured, thereby hiding any health and safety warnings on those faces of the cigarette packet. To achieve this the panels can be made of an opaque material or otherwise designed so as to hide the parts of the packet covered thereby. Optionally, the clip may also be provided with side panels, extending from either the base of the clip or one or other of the arms, so as to also hide any health and safety warnings on the sides of the cigarette packet.
