Abstract
240,117. Budd Manufacturing Co., E. G., (Assignees of Ledwinka, J.). Sept. 20, 1924, [Convention date]. Doors for passenger vehicles. - In a metal door for a closed automobile body, the rails or edges are formed of Z- section, the web of which constitutes the jamb face of the door and the inner flanges form a support for the upholstery panels. The hinge rail 11, Fig. 2, consists of a lower length having a web 23, Fig. 8, of a greater depth than the web 23<1> of an upper length which forms part of the window frame. Similarly the jamb rail 10 has a lower length of a compound Z section with two webs 18, 21, Fig. 7, the web 18 being continued to form an upper length of a less depth. The top and bottom rails 12, 13 respectively are of simple Z-section, but having webs 27, 30. Figs. 3 and 9, of different depths, and are welded at their extremities to the rails 10, 11. The outer flanges 24, 19, 28 and 31 form the overlap, while the inner flanges 25, 22 and 32 are formed with sockets or eyes 41 for attaching the inner upholstery panel. The outer panel 14 is attached to the outer flanges 19, 24 and 31 and is bent over along its upper edge 33, Fig. 6, at a point opposite to the upper edge 35 of the lock plate 15 which is shaped as shown in Fig. 9 and carries a lock 39 and window operating-mechanism 37. Angle-pieces 44, 45, 46 are welded to the jamb and hinge rails to form guides for the window 51, while a channel 47 is formed in the top rail 12 to receive the upper edge of the window. Diagonal bracing strips 16, 17 welded together at the point 40 where they cross and also welded at their ends to the inner flanges of the door and to the lock plate 15 serve to strengthen the structure and constitute an additional support for the upholstery panel.
