Abstract

A Hybrid Ignition system comprises an insulated high tension voltage distribution bus, insulated electrodes descending from the bus into each cylinder, the cylinders being connected to the bus circuit. The bus may supply voltage to each cylinder, the electrodes preferably enter the cylinders via its head, and the bus and electrode are preferably integrated at the point of a recess in the bus and are coated using the same piece of insulating material. The bus and electrode are preferably continuously charged by an external high voltage source, the electrode preferably discharging to a piston within the cylinder whenever the piston "comes into range" of the electrode. It may also be possible to mount the bus directly onto a system's existing spark plug arrangement.

Proposed Ignition System For Exceeding Current Ever 8,P.M, Limitation ?Intes to accompanunq dial The disarm is t to scale. The cylinder valve amugerflent i' not shown for the purposes of clarity.
Buetially' this eytesn will employ capacitive high-tension bud COMER layer of insulative ma:enaI, which will shield the but bow in terms of radio frequency "d also in teems of voltage leaking to Fund. I:epending from the bus will be saner of insulated eleeodes, one for each cylinder, which m11 pmtrde Ho into the cylior by a pN- determined amount via ES additional insulator mounted into the cylinder head. The shape of the insulator no ted Into He eylintsr head will be such that combustion pressures Wit not dislodge it, It will protrude past the top of the cylinder heed "d mate into a recess conned m the insulation of He H'T, As, thereby elDn=g the possibility of voltage led, to ground.
The proposed ignition system bus will be oonetently caged by an external high voltage source. A tigeharge will occur between the qentre oloctrodo and the piston crown as goon as the piston 4cames into range". The "coned' into range" timengion ean be adjusted by physically alterir the cent:re eleoode pmwion into He cylinder or by altering the charge voltage of the capacitive bus.
The essential discrete between a eonventicnal ignition - tem exit this proposed system is that in He proposed sylvan the voltage schge will He preBerit all the time c piston i' range so' in order to time the ignition angle, the fuel injection instance has to be modified to suit. This mean" at, unlike s conventional final injection eyt, the injector will have to inject directly into the commotion chamber will aIresy be under pressure due to wnpreslio:L Therefore, the fuel injection system will have to be modified to suit. This modifeatian to the fuel in3eciion system will be subject to payout application and will bo dealt with at a later date.
To reduce Me complexity of the integration of his ignition cysts it is possible to mount die H.T. bus and associated system directly own an engines existing sparking plug Bre.gement.
