Abstract

A folder 10 has a base portion 11, a cover portion 12 and a spine 13 connecting them. The cover portion 12 is provided along a margin 16, remote from and extending parallel to the spine 13, with a binding 21 for retaining a stack of sheets 20. The base portion 11 is folded along a crease 14 extending parallel to the spine 13 mid way between edge 15 of the base portion 11 and spine 13, the crease 14 having a binding 23 for retaining a stack of sheets 22 each having a transverse dimension corresponding to the distance from the crease 14 to edge 15. The stack of sheets 20 may be printed with general information and the stack of sheets 22 may be printed with detailed information. The base portion 11 is foldable along the crease 14 so that appropriate detailed information can be laid upon corresponding general information for handy reference.

Description

A Folder This invention relates to a folder.
it is known to provide folders for storing stationery. In GB-A- 694,534, for example, there is disclosed a folder comprising a base portion, a cover portion and a spine connecting the base portion to the cover portion, the cover portion being adapted to receive an insert on an inner surface thereof when covering the base portion. The insert may comprise a stack of sheets and the cover portion may be provided with locating means for locating the stack of sheets so that they are turnable relative to the cover portion.
A disadvantage of known folders is that they do not provide for displaying additional information vis-a-vis relevant information displayed in an insert. For example, an insert may comprise a document providing invariable information, such as a sales brochure, and it may be necessary to refer to additional variable information, such as prices of articles illustrated in the sales brochure, but known folders do not provide for displaying such additional variable information vis-a-vis the relevant information displayed in the insert.
According to the present invention, there is provided a folder comprising a base portion, a cover portion and a spine connecting the base portion to the cover portion, the cover portion being adapted to receive an insert on an inner surface thereof when covering the base portion wherein the base portion is provided with locating means for locating a stack of sheets so that the sheets are turnable relative to the base portion, the locating means being elongate and extending parallel to the spine and being located between the spine and a parallel edge of the base portion remote from the spine.
Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a folder in accordance with the present invention shown in an open condition and in one mode, Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the folder in another mode, and Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the folder in yet another mode.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown an embodiment of a folder 10 in accordance with the present invention, the folder 10 being formed of a rectangular sheet of card material and comprising a base portion 11, a cover portion 12 and a spine 13 connecting the base portion 11 to the cover portion 12. The base portion 11 is provided with a crease 14 extending parallel to the spine 13 and located midway between the spine 13 and an edge 15 of the base portion 11 remote from and extending parallel to the spine 13. The cover portion 12 is provided with a crease 16 extending parallel to the spine 13 and adjacent an edge 17 of the cover portion 12 remote from and extending parallel to the spine 13. A margin 18 between the crease 16 and the adjacent edge 17 of the cover portion 12 is provided with a strip of double-sided adhesive 19 so that, when the margin 18 is folded along the crease 16 on to an inner surface of the cover portion 12, the margin 18 adheres to the surface. The dimensions of the rectangular sheet of card material from which the folder 10 is formed are such that the area of the cover portion 12 from the crease 16 to the spine 13 corresponds with the area of the base portion 11.
Prior to folding the material of the folder 10 at the crease 16, the edge 17 is presented to a punching device, which punches a series of apertures along the edge 17. Similarly, the base portion 1 1 is folded along the crease 14 and the creased edge is presented to the device so that a series of apertures is punched along the crease 14. The edge 17 and the crease 14 are then successively presented to a binding machine, which provides the edge 17 with a stack of sheets 20 bound thereto by a binding 21 and provides the crease 14 with a stack of sheets 22 bound thereto by a binding 23. The transverse dimension of each of the sheets of the stack 22 is half of the transverse dimension of each of the sheets of the stack 20. The margin 18 is then adhesively secured to the inner surface of the cover portion 12 by means of the double-sided adhesive 19.
In the mode illustrated in Figure 1, the folder 10 is shown in an open condition and with the base portion 11 comprising two rectangular panels 24 and 25 each having an area corresponding to the area of each of the sheets in the stack 22 and the panels 24 and 25 lying in the same plane and supporting the sheets whether positioned on either side or on one or the other side of the binding 23. In this mode, the sheets of the stack 20 may be printed with invariable information and may comprise, for example, a sales brochure and the sheets of the stack 22 may be printed with variable information and may comprise, for example, a price list. When additional information, for example a price, is required regarding an item illustrated on a particular sheet in the stack 20, the information can be searched for, without disturbing the sheets of the stack 20, by turning the sheets of the stack 22 relative to the binding 23 until a sheet of the stack 22 having the relevant information printed thereon is located and positioned vis-a-vis the item illustrated on the sheet of the stack 20.
In the mode illustrated in Figure 2, the stack of sheets 22 is turned on to the panel 25 of the base portion 11 and the panel 24 of the base portion 11 is folded under the panel 25.
In this arrangement, the sheets of the stack 20 could be printed notes for conference delegates and the sheets of the stack 22 could be blank so that the delegates have a facility for taking their own notes. With such an arrangement, the folded-under panel 24 forms with the panel 25 a double thickness support for the writing pad comprising the stack of sheets 22, thereby providing additional rigidity. Furthermore, notes may be written on the sheets of the stack 22 in synchronism with turning of the pages of the stack 20. In this manner, hand-written notes may easily be referred back to relevant pages of text printed on the stack 20.
In the mode illustrated in Figure 3, the stack of sheets 22 is turned on to the panel 24 of the base portion 11 and the base portion 11 is pivoted at the spine 13 and at the crease 14 so that the panel 25 lies on the inner surface of the cover portion 12 and the panel 24 lies on the panel 25. The arrangement would be suitable for text in which reference is made to footnotes. The text would be printed on the sheets of the stack 20 in two adjacent columns and the footnotes would be printed on the front and rear of each of the sheets of the stack 22. The arrangement would such that the folder 10 would be configured as shown in Figure 3 when reading the left-hand column of each sheet of the stack 20, so that footnotes are located adjacent the column on the front of an adjacent sheet in the stack 22. The base portion 11 would then be unfolded to the position shown in Figure 1 and the upper-most sheet of the stack 22 would then be turned, as indicated in Figure 1, so that the reverse of the sheet, with appropriate foot notes visible, would lie adjacent the right-hand column of text of the adjacent sheet of the stack 20. The procedure would be repeated for reading text of each subsequent sheet of the stack 20.
It will be appreciated that the folder 10 may be formed of material other than card and may, for example, be formed of plastics material.
