Abstract
A board game comprises a board with printed musical notation and signs. The tokens, made from pewter, are moved around the board according to the throw of the dice and each square has marked with a note which varies in pitch and value, increasing as the player proceeds around the board. A treble clef 1, a bass clef 5, a crotchet rest 3 and a double stave sign 7 are each marked in one corner. Composer questions and reward cards are provided, together with cards on which notes of various pitches and values are printed. The object of the game is to enable players to learn to read music without playing an instrument.
Description
THE DESCRIPTION:
Board Game The invention relates to a board game of the educational and family type, in which fun and winning are combined with learning.
The educational and family board games are well known, but the musical one which are an introduction to music, separated from learning notes by an instrument are not accessible. As a music teacher for many years, the need for an aid to familiarize pupils with music notation has become apparent.
An object of the invention is to focus attention on the way in which music is printed on the stave, combining the note value and pitch. By separating this information from the actual playing of an instrument, this enables the pupil to concentrate on the sight-reading of the music only. The ability to play the notes of the correct value is speeded up and increases the progress of the learner. The game is also enriched by the set of questions aiming to provide some other information regarding classical music.
Accordingly, this invention provides a board game including 50 Composer Question Cards, 16 Composer Rewards, Set of 4 colour envelopes or little boxes with double set of pitch of the notes in the same colour as the envelope or little boxe,4 black double stave cards,40 Composer's Notes Value-semibreves, 40 Composer's Notes Value-minims, 40 Composer's Notes Value-crotchets, 1 Sample Game and Rules, Game manual, dice and 4 movers instruments.
Preferably the game board will be made of 2mm card, the Composer Question cards, Composer Rewards, envelopes or little boxes with notes, black double stave cards, Composer's Notes Value cards, Sample Game and rules will be made of light card, the game manual will be made of paper, dice is made of plastic and movers-instruments will be made of pewter.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1 shows the top view of the board game; FIGURE 2 shows the Composer Questions card; FIGURE 3 shows the Composer Rewards card; FIGURE 4 shows the player's envelopes or little boxes in the following colours: red, blue, yellow and lilac containing the various pitch notes relative to those printed on the board; FIGURE 5 shows the black double stave card; FIGURE 6 illustrates the movers- instruments and dice; FIGURE 7 shows the Composer's Notes Value: semibreves, minims, and crotchets; FIGURE 8 shows the Sample Game with rules; FIGURE 9 shows the manual, introduction to the game.
As shown in Figure 1, the board contains 4 rows of different notes, one on each side of the board. The players choose the conductor the person who is in charge of the game, then each player chooses an instrument, as shown in FIGURE 6 and places it on the Start sign, treble clef (1). Each player selects an envelope (or little box) with the same colour double sets of pitch notes, as shown in FIGURE 4 and place it in front of him/herself. Each player also places in front of him/herself a black double stave, as shown in FIGURE 5 for his/her pitch notes.
The conductor will give now to each player Composer's Notes Value, as shown in FIGURE 7 three of each value to be placed in front of him/herselú The conductor will place on the board the Composer Questions, as shown in FIGURE 2 which contains 50 different questions regarding Classical Music (15) and Composer Rewards, as shown in FIGURE 3 which are 16 cards double set of crotchets with the same pitch of the notes as are printed an the Board Game, as shown in FIGURE 1. The starting point of the game is sign called Treble clef (1) and after this, the crotchets (2) vary in pitch. First player throws the dice, as shown in FIGURE 6 and moves an instrument, as shown in FIGURE 6 that number of bars. Each time a player stops on the pitch note (2,4,6,8) he/she has to call the name of the note aloud. Once a player called the name of the pitch correctly he/she can exchange his/her Composer's Notes Value, as shown in FIGURE 7 for that Pitch note, then he/she will take from his/her envelope (riffle box) a colour note, as shown in FIGURE 4 and place one colour note on the same pitch note on the Board Game, as shown in FIGURE 1 that he/she has got his/her instrument on, as shown in FIGURE 6 and place another colour note of the same pitch and value, as shown in FIGURE 4 on his/her double stave placed in front of him/herself, as shown in FIGURE S. then he/she has to give to a conductor a correct Composer's Note Value e.g. Crotchet for crotchet. Only one player can only take particular pitch note on the Board Game, as shown in FIGURE 1 unless he/she loses it in the play then other player can exchange that pitch note. Once a player has called the name of the pitch (2) incorrectly then he/she has to go back to start sign.
Crotchet rest (3) is placed in the corner, once a player stops on the crotchet rest he/she looses one round, and after this are minims (4) which have accidentals and vary in pitch. Once the player cans the name out correctb he/she can exchange the note again, once a player called the name of the pitch incorrectly then he/she has to go back to Crotchet rest sign (3) and loose one round. Once a player stops on the pitch note which already belongs to another player he/she still needs to calls the name of the pitch note aloud, once a player called that particular note incorrectly he/she has to give to the owner of that note a Composer's Note Value, as shown in FIGURE 7 which is the same Value as that particular pitch note, once a player - an owner of the colour note call his/her pitch note incorrectly, then he/she looses that particular pitch note, as shown in FIGURE 4 then he/she takes the colour card with the pitch note of the board and the same from his/her black double stave, as shown in FIGURE S and place them in the his/her envelope (little box),as shown in FIGURE 4. In the following corner is sign caned Bass clef (S) and after this sign there are semibreves (6), which vary in pitch. Once a player stops on the semibreve and calls the note incorrectly he/she go back to the Bass clef sign. The last corner has got Double stave sign (7) and after this sign are notes of varying pitch and also different values (8), once a player stops there he/she need to call out the notes starting from the lower in the bass clef, failing that is like to call the note incorrectly, so a player need to go back to a Double stave sign (7). A player can exchange the pitch notes, as shown in FIGURE 4 at any time of the game as long as he/she can them out correctb, has got enough of the Composer's Notes Value, as shown in FIGURE 7 and if the pitch notes has not been taken by another player already.
There are a few signs which are on the board, as shown in FIGURE 1 which have a black background, from the left: dotted minim (9) once a player stops here me conductor will give to him/her Composer note value, as shown in FIGURE 7 of the same value-dotted minim 3 beats, crotchet rest (3), repetition sign (10) once a player stops here he/she has to go back to the start sign, Treble clef (1), minim (10) once a player stops here the conductor will give him/her Composer note value, as shown in FIGURE 7 of the same value, Composer Question stop (12) once a player stops here the conductor will take a top card from the Composer's Question box (15), as shown in Figure 2 and will read it to that particular player, correct answer will be rewarded by a Composer Rewards card (16), as shown in FIGURE 3, player can place it on his/her double stave, as shown in FIGURE 5 in front him/herself, once a player does not know the answer he/she gets nothing, crotchet (13) once a player stops here the conductor will give to him/her Composer note value, as shown in FIGURE 7 of the same value, semibreve (14) once a player stops here the conductor will give to him/her Composer note value, as shown in FIGURE 7 of the same value. Inside the board there are two squares, one is for the Composer Questions cards (15) and another for the Composer Rewards (16). The winner is the player who scored the biggest total of the value of the pitch notes, as shown in FIGURE 4 on his/her double black stave, as shown in FIGURE 5.
Figure 2 shows the top view of the black card with "Composer Questions" written on it. The reverse side of the card has got a question and three possible answers, with the correct answer listed underneath separately. There are 50 of those cards in the game. Once a player stops on the composer question stop (12) on the Board game, as shown in the FIGURE 1 the conductor will read a question to him/her, as shown in this sample: Sample 1: Q. Which composer wrote music for churches? A) Schubert, B) Paganini, C) Bach A. Bach, Sample 2: Q. How many symphonies did Beethoven write? A. 9, Sample 3: Q. Which nationality was the inventor of the pianoforte? A) English, B) French, C) Italian A. Italian, Sample 4: Q. What is the name of the note in the treble clef lying on the 4th line? A) D, B) G. C) B A. D, Sample 5: Q. Which composer wrote "Fur Elise"? A) Verdi, B) Schumann, C) Beethoven A. Beethoven.
Figure 3 shows the top view of the black card "Composer Rewards" written on it.
The reverse side of the card has got crotchet located on the stave in varying pitch relative to those crotchets which are printed on the Board game, as shown in FIGURE 1, once the player answers the Composer question correctly he/she places the Composer Reward card, as shown in FIGURE 3 on his/her Black double stave, as shown in FIGURE 5. There are 16 of those cards in the game.
Figure 4 illustrates an envelope (could be also a little box) with 4 pockets (1) filled with the various notes relative to those printed on the Board Game, as shown in FIGURE 1. There are 4 sets of those envelopes (little boxes) with a double set of pitch of the notes in the same colour as the envelope (or little box). When a player decide to exchange his/her Composer's Notes Value, as shown in FIGURE 7 for a pitch note relative to the one on the Board game, as shown in FIGURE 1 he/she place that particular pitch note on the Board, as shown in FIGURE 1 and on his/her Black double stave, as shown in FIGURE 5. The winner is the player who scored the -s- biggest total of the value of the pitch notes on his/her Black Stave, as shown in FIGURE 5.
Figure 5 shows the black double stave card. Each player has got one black double stave card in front of his/herself in order to place on it his/her colour pitch notes, as shown in FIGURE 4. There are 4 of black double stave cards in this game.
Figure 6 illustrates 4 movers - musical instruments (1) and the black dice (2). Each player chooses an instrument and throws dice in turn.
Figure 7 shows the Composer's Notes Values, there are 40 of each value. Semibreve (l), Minim (2), Crotchet (3). Before the start of the game, each player is given by the conductor three cards of each value, he/she can later in the game exchange for the various pitch notes printed on the Board, as shown in FIGURE 1 using his/her colour pitch notes, as shown in FIGURE 4 and place one colour note of the same pitch on the Board, as shown in FIGURE 1 and another colour pitch note on his/her black double stave, as shown in FIGURE 5.
Figure 8 shows the "Sample game" of the Board Game. The Sample game aims at those who are complete beginners, never had any music lesson and want to learn.
The Sample game is also very useful for those, who are already learning, to help them to be able to read the music separately from playing the instrument. Number (1) illustrates the actual picture of the Board, as shown in FIGURE 1 with the names of the notes written in non musical language: sample: "C", "G sharp", "C G B ", which corresponds to the notes on the stave printed on the Board, as shown in FIGURE 1. The numbers (2,3,4) introduce the contents of the game. The numbers (5,6,7) are an introduction to the music notation, which is included in the Board game, as shown in FIGURE 1 such as: Pitch of the notes, Value of the Notes. The other symbols on the Board like Treble clef, Crotchet rest, Repetition sign, Bass Clef, Double stave. The reverse of the card explain the rules of the game. There is only one card in the game.
Figure 9 is the Manual of the game. It is a 6 page booklet which contains three small chapters regarding the object of the game, that: to introduce a different way of learning of the basic foundation to music language as fun, to help to learn quickly by the constant repetitions, to increase player's concentration and alertness, to improve player's mental maths skills when player has to add up value of me notes particularly on hislher black stave, as shown in FIGURE 5 and also when he/she wants to exchange the Composer's Notes value, as shown in FIGURE 7 for the pitch notes, as shown in FIGURE 4. Another chapter refers to contents and author notes where a player can find some reference to Music terms used in the game.
Claims (5)
- CLAIMS: 1. A Board Game including board, with printed different musicalnotation and signs, so that can be used separately from actually playing an instrument, so that can be used by a person never had music lessons before with provided in the game the Sample game.
- 2. A Board Game as claimed in Claim 1 where the notation is printed, there are notes printed on the stave of different pitch, also there are notes of different value only, included are other musical signs like treble clef, bass clef, repetition sign, crotchet rest sign, double stave sign, composer question stop and two squares on the board for the Composer Questions cards and Composer's Reward cards.
- 3. A Board Game as claimed in any preceding claim including a 50 Composer Questions cards, 16 Composer's Reward cards, 4 black double stave cards, set of 4 different colour envelopes or little boxes with double set of pitch of the notes in the same colour as the envelope or little box ( 16 crotchets, 16 minims with accidentals, 16 semibreves, 12 double stave cards with varying pitch and different values), 40 of the Composer's Notes Values - semibreves, of the Composer's Notes Values - minims, 40 of the Composer's Notes Values - crotchets, 1 black dice, 4 movers - instruments, 1 Sample game and rules, 1 Game manual.
- 4. A Board Game as claimed in any preceding claim is made from 2mm card, or any card or paper or combination of these materials, dice id made from plastic, movers - instruments are made of pewter.
- 5. A Board Game substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
