Abstract

A neck cover comprising a shaped sheet-like membrane A with adjustable fastening means for maintaining close fitting engagement with the neck, withers and shoulders of a horse or pony. The cover is fastened along a front edge which, when in position, runs down the centre of the underside of the horse's neck and front of its chest. The fastening means are strips of "hook and loop tape" and clips which engage with D-rings. The fastenings under the neck area are covered with an over flap F which is fastened with a strip of "hook and loop" tape. The cover is held in place round the girth area of the horse by a surcingle K which is stitched to the cover. The cover is made of waterproof, tear resistant fabric with a cotton or fur fabric lining. It may be made of a quilted fabric, if for indoor use.

Description

THE DESCRIPTION
UNIVERSAL NECK COVER FOR HORSES/I,ONIES
Background
The invention relates to a horse/ pony neck cover that covers the shoulder and wither areas and with fasteners? fits onto the horse/ pony independently of any rug.
It may also be used with any rug, providing a continuous cover for the whole body.
Explaining the problem that my invention solves Neck covers usually work in conjunction with a horse/ pony rug by clipping onto a series of 'D' rings on the outside of the rug. The disadvantages of this are; you either purchase the corresponding neck cover and rug, which as horses usually have at least 2 rugs usually made by different manufacturers makes it an expensive exercise if you have to purchase 2 different neck covers. Or you sew 'D' rings onto your rugs to match the fastenings on the neck cover, this compromises the rugs waterproofing in these areas therefore ending up with wet on the inside of the rug, against the horse.
What my invention does An object of this invention is to provide a neck cover, which can be used in conjunction with any type of rug.
The essential features of my invention A horse/pony cover which covers neck, withers and shoulders, held in position with adjustable fastenings down the centre of the underside of the horse's neck, front of chest and around the girth area, therefore worn independently of a rug.
Some important (but not essential) features of my invention Preferably the cover is made from waterproof "rip-stop" fabric with cotton or fur fabric lining or, for indoor use, quilted fabric with or without cotton or fur lining, or from a combination of these materials.
Beginning of the detailed description
Introduction to the drawings
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Drawing I Side view showing the cover worn by the horse as it has been designed to be fitted.
Drawing2 Front view showing the cover worn by the horse as is has been designed to be fitted Drawing 3 shows the cover Iying flat right side uppermost, with the over flap cover lying flat, outside up.
Drawing 4 shows the cover Iying flat, right side uppermost, with the over flap cover folded back, exposing the fastenings.
Drawing 5 shows the cover Iying flat, wrong side uppermost.
Drawing Descriptions
As shown in drawing 3...
The cover comprises of a shaped piece of outer fabric 'A', bound with waterproof binding 'B' around the outer edge. At the top of the poll there is a fur-type piece of fabric, 'W' to prevent rubbing. Red On the left edge of the cover is a female strip of Velcrol'C'' which is for the over lap of the cover before fastening.
There are... D-rings 'D' sewn underneath another piece of female Velcro. These are to clip the fastenings onto. The next piece of female Velcro', 'E' is for the over flap after fastening.
On the right side there is the over flap 'F' sewn down along its left edge with double stitching 'G'.
Adjustable fastenings have been attached with webbing and sewn on to the chest piece of the cover and are denoted by 'J'. These clip onto the Drings 'I' which are situated on the opposite side of the cover in a mirror image of the fastenings 'J'.
At the bottom of the drawing, wither end, the surcingle 'K' is sewn onto the outer cover denoted by stitching l', leaving a small loop of webbing in the centre 1'. The surcingle %' has an adjustable buckle Hi' to tighten or loosen it. At the end of the surcingle 'K' on the right side of the drawing is a female attachment 'O'. This fastens into the male attachment 'P' on the left side of the drawing. There are two webbing keepers 'Q' either end of the surcingle 'K'.
Fig I - D-rings 'D'& '1' Fig 2 - Clips 'J' Fig 3 - Buckle Hi' As shown in drawing 4. ..
On the right side under the over flap 'F', adjustable clips 'J' have been attached with webbing and sewn into place. These correspond and fasten to the Wrings 1)'.
As shown in drawing 5...
Binding 'B' folded over from the outer edge is shown on the inside.
The over flap 'F' is shown with a male piece of Velcri'S' sewn onto its outer edge.
This would fasten to its female partner hi' as depicted in dewing 3.
On the inside right of the cover a strip of male Velcro''T' has been sewn in and marries to its female partner 'C' to form the overlap. Velcrol'C' is depicted in drawing 3.
Clips 'J' can also be seen from this angle at a long adjushnent setting.
Cotton or other breathable fabric 'A can also be sewn in as a line over the total inside surface of the cover and caught under the outer edge binding 'B'. Placed on top of this in the area shown can be a fur fabric liner 'V'. These are optional depending on the outer fabric used and climatic use.
