Description

(54) MANE COVER FOR HORSES (71) We, CHARLES WALTER PINKNEY and EVELYN JEAN PINKNEY, of The Meadows, Keldholrne, Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, both British Subjects do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a mane cover for a horse and to a method of keeping horses' manes neat in appearance.
According to the invention, there is provided a mane cover-for a horse, such cover comprising an area of cloth shaped to fit over the back of a horse's neck, strap means adapted to pass beneath the horse's neck, for securing the mane cover and further strap means for fastening the upper end of the cover to the horse's head.
Preferably the cover and strap means are of nylon.
The straps may be fastened with buckles and/or they may be elasticated.
Preferably the further strap means is arranged to pass down the forehead of the horse for fastening beneath its head.
In preferred embodiments of the invention the lower end of the mane cover is provided with means such as one or more loops or a strap or buckle by which it can be connected to a horse blanket.
The mane cover will serve to keep a horse's mane clean and tidy after plaiting.
A preferred embodiment of mane cover according to the invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1 and 2 are respectively views of the upper and lower sides of a mane cover when laid flat; and Figure 3 shows the mane cover in posi tion on a horse.
In the drawings, the mane cover comprises an area of cloth 1 adapted to be secured over a horse's mane by a plurality of straps. These straps comprise a nose loop 2 (which may be elasticated) secured to the front end 3 of the area of cloth 1 by means of a forehead strap 4. The front end 3 of the area of cloth 1 is tapered so that it can lie between the horse's ears as shown in Figure 3. The main body portion of the area of cloth is arranged to be fastened over the horse's mane by means of two further straps, a throat strap 5 and a neck strap 6. The throat strap 5 is fastenable by a buckle 7 as shown in Figure 2.
The neck strap 6 may also be fastenable by a buckle, but as shown it is preferably a fixed permanent loop which can be slipped over the horse's head. It will be noted that the throat strap 5 and its buckle 7 are attached to the main body portion of the area of cloth 1 at its front end and that the neck strap 6 is fastened to the rear of the main body portion of the area of cloth. Linking straps 8 lead from the neck strap 6 and are fastened one to the approximate centre of each side edge of the main body portion of the area of cloth. The rear end 9 of the mane cover may be fastened by a strap 10 to a buckle 11 provided, for example, on a horse blanket or body jacket.
In accordance with the invention the horse's mane may be plaited using elastic bands before the mane cover is put on.
Such elastic bands will be formed of a coloured elastic material and the colour is chosen to match the colour of the horse's mane. In fact it is only necessary to provide elastic bands of three colours, black, white and chestnut since one of these will substantially match the colour of any mane.
Such bands are preferably of approximately 4 inches circumference.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A mane cover for a horse, which comprises an area of cloth shaped to fit over the back of a horse's neck, first strap means adapted to pass beneath the neck for securing the mane cover and further strap means for fastening the upper end of the cover to the horse's head.
2. A mane cover according to claim 1, wherein said first strap means comprises a fixed loop strap attached to the area of cloth.
