Description

Title: A Method of Attaching a Generally U-shaped Guttering Member to a
Substantially Upright Structure
Description of Invention
This invention relates to a method of attaching a generally U-shaped "uttering member, such as a box gutter, against a substantially upright structure, such as an external wall of a building.
Box gutters are required, for example, when installing a conservatory which abuts an external wall surface of a building. The box gutter is required where a pitched roof of the conservatory slopes downwardly to meet the external wall surface of the building. Conventionally, the box gutter is, for example, supported by attaching the box gutter to the external wall of the building using threaded fasteners, such as screws. However, this is difficult to achieve as the box gutter, which is typically bulky and therefore awkward to handle, needs to be held in place while it is attached to the wall surface. The box gutter is normally held in place by one or more workers, while a further worker fastens the box gutter to the wall.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a method of attaching a generally U-shaped "uttering member, having first and second limbs and a base connecting the first and second limbs, to a substantially upright structure, the method including securing to the substantially upright structure a support member; the support member having a first part which extends along the substantially upright structure, and a second part which extends outwardly, substantially transversely, of the first part at a lower end thereof, the first part including a receiving formation which opens downwardly towards the second part, wherein the method includes inserting an edge portion of the first limb of the generally U-shaped "uttering member into the receiving formation, and supporting the base of the generally U-shaped "uttering member on the second part of the support member.
By attaching a generally U-shaped "uttering member to a substantially upright structure using a method according to the first aspect of the invention, a generally U-shaped "uttering member, such as a box gutter, can be easily attached to, for example, a wall. The support member can be secured to a wall of a building, where the box gutter is required; the box gutter can then be manoeuvred until an edge portion a limb of the gutter is received in the receiving formation of the first part of the support member. Such a method avoids the need for a number of workers to hold the gutter in place whilst a further worker secures the box gutter to the wall, thereby increasing the efficiency of installation of the box gutter.
The edge portion of the first limb of the generally U-shaped "uttering member may be inserted into the receiving formation before the base of the generally U-shaped "uttering member is supported on the second part of the support member.
The method may include the steps of tilting the generally U-shaped towards the support member to enable the edge portion of the first limb of the "uttering member to be inserted into the receiving formation; and then moving the base of the "uttering member towards the support member to enable the base to be supported on the second part of the support member.
After the edge portion of the first limb of the generally U-shaped "uttering member has been inserted into the receiving formation, the method may include the step of lowering the "uttering member relative to the support member so that the base of the "uttering member is supported on the second part of the support member.
When the base of the generally U-shaped "uttering member is supported on the second part of the support member, a further part of the base of the "uttering member may be supported on an adjacent structure, such as, for example a conservatory frame structure.
The method may include the step of securing the base of the generally Ushaped "uttering member to the second part of the support member, using, for example, a threaded fastener such as a self-tapping screw.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a combination of a support member and a generally U-shaped "uttering member for use in the method according to the first aspect of the invention, the support member having a first part which extends along the substantially upright structure, a second part which extends outwardly, substantially transversely, of the first part at a lower end thereof, the first part including a receiving formation which opens downwardly towards the second part and means by which the support member may be secured to the substantially upright structure.
The means for securing the support member to the substantially upright structure may include a plurality of apertures each through which a fastener may be introduced to connect the support member to the substantially upright surface.
The apertures may be provided in the first part of the support member.
The support member may include further securing means for securing the base of the substantially U-shaped "uttering member to the second part of the support member. The further securing means may be, for example, a self tapping screw threaded fastener.
The receiving formation and the second part of the support member may be substantially parallel to one another. !
The "uttering member may include an integral support for supporting at least one roofing member of the building structure, such as, for example, a rafter of a roof of the building structure. The integral support may be in the form of an integral eaves beam.
The "uttering member may be provided with strengthening ribs to increase the stiffness thereof. The strengthening ribs may provide an internal cavity into which at least one threaded fastener can be introduced, thereby avoiding puncturing of the internal surface of the base of the "uttering member.
The invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a side cross-sectional view of a support member according to the second aspect of the invention, supporting a substantially U-shaped "uttering member, using a method according to the first aspect of the invention.
Referring to Figure l there is shown a combination of a support member lO and a generally U-shaped "uttering member in the form of a box gutter 30 according to the second aspect of the invention. The support member to is supporting the gutter 30 using a method according to the first aspect of the invention. The support member 10 is substantially L-shaped in crosssection and has a first part 12, which extends upwardly of a substantially upright structure, such as a wall 18, a receiving formation 20 on the first part 12 and second part 26, which extends away from the first part 12, substantially transversely thereto. At its upper end the first part 12 includes securing means in the form of a plurality of spaced apertures 14 each adapted to receive a threaded fastener 16 to secure the first part 12 of the support member 10 to the wall 18. The receiving formation 20 is provided adjacent and below the apertures 14 and includes a downwardly projecting lip 22, which together with a portion of the first part 12 of the support member 10 provides internal facing sides of a recess channel 24. !
The box gutter 30 has a first limb 34, a second limb 35 and a base 36.
The second limb 35 includes an integral eaves beam, both the second limb 35 and the base 36 have spaced strengthening ribs 37.
To attach the box gutter 30 to the wall 18, firstly the support member 10 must be secured to the wall 18 using fasteners 16. The box gutter 30 is then manoeuvred until an upper edge 32 of the first limb 34 is tilted towards the first part 12 of the support member 10. The edge 32 is then inserted into the recess 24 of the receiving formation 20. The base 36 of the box gutter 30 is then manoeuvred towards the first part 12 of the support member 10 until the first limb 34 abuts the first part 12. The box gutter 30 is then lowered as necessary until the portion of the base 36 of the box gutter 30, below the first limb 34, abuts an upper surface of the second part 26. In this position, the box gutter 30 is fully supported by the support member 10 in a cantilever-type fashion. The relative distance between the entrance to the recess channel 24 and the upper surface of the second part 26 is such that when the portion of the base 36 of the box gutter 30 is supported thereby, the edge 32 of the limb 34 is at least partially within the recess 24. One or more screw threaded fasteners 42, such as self-tapping screw threaded fasteners, is/are then used to secure the base 36 of the box gutter 30 to the second part 26. Each screw threaded fasteners 42 is introduced into a cavity between two adjacent strengthening ribs 37, so as to avoid puncturing the internal surface of the base 36.
Once the portion of the base 36 is supported by the second part 26, or at the same time as the portion of the base 36 is abutted thereon, a further portion of the base 36, remote from the first limb 34 and substantially below second limb 35 may be secured to or supported on an adjacent structure, such as, for example, a frame structure of a conservatory (not shown).
The support member 10 andlor the box gutter 30 may be manufactured from a plastics material, such as, for example, PVC, or a metallic material, such as, for example, and aluminium alloy. Where made from a plastics material, the support member 10 and the box gutter 30 may be manufactured by extrusion or any other suitable method.
The second part 26 of the support member 10 may be provided with an S integral clip or the like, into which the base 36 of the box gutter can be engaged, by, for example a snap fit, to secure the second part 26 to the support member 10, thereby avoiding the need for additional securing means, such as screw threaded fasteners.
Also, if the support member were to be pressed from a metallic material, the receiving formation 20 of the support member 10 could be provided as a pressed formation on the support member 10.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
