Abstract

A socket spanner extension comprises a body 7 with a primary drive 3 co-operable with a standard socket spanner (1, fig. 1), a secondary drive 5 co-operable with a nut or bolt, and internal clearance such as a plain bore 6 to allow access to nuts which have excessive bolt thread protruding through. The primary drive 3 may be a twelve-point drive and may be provided with a compressible friction retention ring 4.

Description

SOCKET SPANNER EXTENSION
The invention relates to socket spanners which are generally available in standard and long series. Long series socket spanners are convenient for use when the nut or bolt to be driven is located in a position such as to be inaccessible to a standard series socket spanner. Long series socket spanners are also convenient when excessive bolt thread is protruding through a nut and prevents engagement of the nut by a standard series socket spanner.
To meet the varying demands for the use of socket spanners it is necessary to have sets of both Long and Standard series socket spanners available at the workplace.
This entails transport of both sets of socket spanners to and from the work place.
An object of the invention is to provide a socket spanner extension which allows a standard series socket spanner to meet those usage requirements that dictate the use of a long series socket spanner. A socket spanner extension is required for each size of socket spanner, their inclusion with a set of standard series socket spanners will obviate the need to have long series socket spanners available at the work place.
Accordingly, this invention provides a socket spanner extension adaptor. The socket spanner extension has a twelve point external primary drive corresponding in size to, and demountable with, the socket spanner. A compressible friction retention ring is provided at the top of the twelve point external drive. The bore of the socket spanner extension adaptor adjacent to the twelve point external drive is plain and exceeds the diameter of thread relative to the size of the nut to be driven. The socket spanner extension has an internal twelve point secondary drive corresponding in size to the socket spanner.
Preferably the socket spanner extension will be made of materials similar to the standard series socket spanner to which it is companion. This would conventionally be of a Chrome Vanadium steel alloy but could be of other materials such as brass where spark proof tools are required.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows a side and plan views of a standard series socket spanner FIGURE 2 shows a side and plan views of a socket spanner extension.
FIGURE 3 shows side views of a standard series socket spanner and a socket spanner extension in a pre- engagement position.
FIGURE 4 shows a standard series socket spanner and socket spanner extension engaged for use.
Figure 1 shows a standard series socket spanner body 1 having a square primary drive 8 which is compatible with conventional drive accessories. The twelve point secondary drive 2 is conventionally used for engagement of hexagonal nuts and bolts.
Figure 2 shows a socket spanner extension body 7. Integral to this body is an external twelve point drive 3 which is co-operable with the twelve point drive 2 of the standard series socket spanner 1. Figure 2 shows external twelve drive 3 has a compressible friction retention ring 4 located in a groove towards the top where the strength reduction of the socket spanner extension is minimised. The socket spanner extension plain bore 6 is internal to the external twelve point drive 3, the internal twelve point drive 5 is the same size as the standard series socket spanner drive 2.
Figure 3 shows the standard series socket spanner 1 and the socket spanner extension 7 in a pre- engagement position.
Figure 4 shows a standard series socket spanner 1 engaged with a socket spanner extension 7. As shown in figure 4, with the engagement of a socket spanner extension in a standard series socket spanner, the assembly effectively reproduces a long series socket spanner.

Claims (7)

  1. Claims 1. A socket spanner extension including a primary drive co
operable with a standard series socket spanner and a secondary drive co-operable with a nut or bolt and with internal clearance to permit assembly with a standard series socket spanner effectively as a similar size long series socket spanner.
  2. 2. A socket spanner extension as in Claim 1 where the primary drive is arranged as twelve point.
  3. 3. A socket spanner extension as in Claim 1 where the secondary drive is of the same size as the primary drive.
  4. 4. A socket spanner extension as claimed in Claim 1 where the non drive clearance bore is plain.
  5. 5. A socket spanner extension as claimed in Claim 1 where a friction retention ring is provided on the primary drive.
  6. 6. A socket spanner extension as claimed in any preceding claim which is made from steel, brass or the same material similar to the standard series socket spanner to which it is adapted.
  7. 7. A socket spanner extension as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
