Abstract
The wave powered machine comprises an endless belt 4 with paddles 5 which drives transfer pumps for supplying water to drive turbines for electrical generation. The machine consists of two floating hulls spaced apart by a deck 1 and an artificial seabed platform 11. The structure comprising the endless belt 4 and paddles 5 is mounted to the deck 1 and the machine is anchored to the seabed. The depth and angle of the artificial seabed platform 11 is adjustable dependent upon ocean conditions.
Description
WAVE POVVERED MACHINE
(The Harnessing of Wave Power) Using wave power to enable the continuous generation of mains electricity supplies.
Modern environmental pressures require the development of alternative, clean, reusable, sources of energy. Such a potential source, readily available, is wave power which may be harnessed to generate electricity. Solutions which have been proposed to date require monitoring of tidal conditions and subsequent machine adjustment. This invention provides an automatic continuous operation.
An artificial seabed (simulated ocean floor) is used to cause the creation of waves from tidal movement (incoming or outgoing) the power of which is then harnessed by paddles. The invention consists of a wave powered machine driving transfer pumps which raise water to a location where a constant head is available for driving water turbines. These turbines in turn drive electrical generators feeding the national grid.
The machine consists of two floating hulls secured together, 10 metres apart, by decking at deck platform level and by the underwater simulated ocean floor. The simulated ocean floor is essential to the design and is set at the correct depth to maximise wave height from incoming ocean swells or tidal movement. The machine will thus operate automatically under all tidal conditions. The depth and angle of the simulated floor is adjustable, and it's configuration is so designed, to achieve optimum performance at installation.
The illustrations attached are in sketch form and are not to scale.
Figure 1 shows the elevation and overall scheme. Figure 2 shows the plan view of the wave powered machine.
Referring to the drawing in figure 1 the machine comprises: 1. Ballasted floating platform.
2. Frameworks 3. Sprocket wheels and drive shafts coupling the two units.
4. The tracks carrying sea water paddles.
5. Paddles.
6. Link between platform and sea bed anchorage.
7. Sea bed anchorage.
8. Sea water shore reservoir. - 2

Sea water pump platform.
11 Simulated ocean floor The flotation hulls are kept in place by fixed guides(6) to the seabed which permit tidal movement. The structure(2) carrying the paddle mechanisms is mounted and aligned on the hulls. The driveshaft, carrying sprockets and flywheel, extends between these two mechanisms one on each hull. Alignment of the paddles(5) is thereby maintained. The driveshaft terminates at each end in a crank which, through a connecting rod, drives double-acting reciprocating pumps. The pumps are mounted on side platforms(10) on each hull providing immersed suction conditions. Total head would be approx. 10 metros at a flowrate appropriate to the electricity generation required.
The machine is anchored in a selected location with known suitable tidal conditions.
Tidal water flows over the underwater simulated seabed(11) which causes the creation of waves at the paddle(5) depth. The paddles(5) are thus caused to move linearly along tracks(4) :which are mounted on sprockets. Rotational movement is thereby imparted to a shaft which drives reciprocating seawater pumps. The water is pumped into an elevated reservoir or lake. Stored water would thus be available at constant head to drive electricity generating turbines in accordance with standard generating station practice.
