Abstract

A wave powered machine has a floating platform 1 upon which is mounted framework 2. Paddles 5 are fitted to endless tracks 4 which rotate as a result of horizontal wave motion. Sprocket wheels and drive shafts 3 are driven by the tracks 4 and the machine is coupled to a conventional pump system. Transfer pumps driven by the wave powered machine raise sea water to a location where a constant head is available for driving water turbines which in turn drive electrical generators 9. The machine is secured permanently by anchor 7, via link 6.

Description

WAVE POWERED MACHINE
The generation of mains electricity supplies using wave power.
This invention consists of a wave powered machine driving transfer pumps which raise sea water to a location where a constant head is available for driving water turbines. These turbines in turn drive electrical generators feeding the national grid.
The innovative approach to the overall system lies in the wave powered prime mover. The design principle of this wave powered machine is to convert horizontal wave power into rotational motion, which in turn is coupled to a conventional pump system. The sea water delivery will be sized to accommodate the turbine needs over a 24 hour period with a reservoir holding a reserve beyond that. This will allow for weather condition changes affecting wave power.
The illustrations attached are in sketch form and are not to scale.
Figure 1 shows the elevation and overall scheme.
Figure 2 shows the plan view of the wave powered machine.
Referring to the drawing in figure 1 the machine comprises: 1. Ballasted floating platform.
2. Frameworks.
3. Sprocket wheels and drive shafts coupling the two units.
4. The tracks carrying sea water paddles.
5. Paddles.
6. Link between platform and sea bed anchorage.
7. Sea bed anchorage.
8. Shore reservoir, sea water.

Claims (3)

CLAIM
1. The innovative claim of this machine lies in its ability to utilise the energy contained in the horizontal motion waves in transferring them into rotational motion.
2. The power output requirements from the machine can be varied at the design stage by the length of the paddles.
3. The capacity of the reservoir can be sized to allow for climatic changes.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows
CLAIM
1 The innovative claim of this machine lies in its ability for automatic and continuous operation, regardless of tidal conditions and water depth, whilst converting linear wave motion into mechanical rotational energy.
2 The power output requirements from the machine can be varied at the design stage by the length of the paddles.
3 The capacity of the reservoir can be sized to allow for climatic changes.
