Abstract

A waste separation bin with multiple compartments 3-9 and detachable storage units 10 - 15 where waste can be stored separately for recycling. Preferably the bin has a foot pedal 16 at the base of the bin's body 1 that may be used as a lever to compress waste prior to storage. The compartments may have hinged lids and guide means to ensure the storage units are easily inserted and removed from the compartments. The storage units may also have lids that will help to prevent a child from taking the waste back out and have child safe lids that can only be opened by an adult. The compartments may store kitchen waste, cans, bottles, kitchen waste paper and batteries and ink cartridges.

Description

WASTE SEPARATION BIN
This invention relates to a waste separation bin Bins are well known receptacles for disposing of waste. There is a special type of bin for disposing of waste suitable for recycling known as an eco-bin.
Eco-bins are, however, relatively expensive. Moreover, they only allow for the separation of two or three types of waste (without compression of any waste) or no sorting of waste (with compression of all waste).
According to the present invention there is provided a waste separation bin comprising a body with multiple compartments for ease of storing different types of waste and detachable storage units for ease of transporting different types of waste to their respective collection points for recycling.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure I shows in perspective the bin in steady state with multiple compartments; Figure 2 shows the mechanism for compressing waste; Figure 3 illustrates the detachable storage units.
Referring to the drawing the bin comprises a body I with a top 2, compartments 3- 9 and detachable storage units 10-15 in order to provide for ease of storing and disposing of different types of waste for recycling.
The top of the bin 2 is designed for storing kitchen waste via compartments 3 and 4. Each compartment has a hinged lid. The unit can be detached and carried via a handle for ease of transport of the waste to home or municipal compost bins.
The compartment 5 is designed for storing glass containers and the storage unit 10 can be removed for ease of transportation to bottle banks. The compartment has a hinged lid.
The compartment 6 is designed for storing newspapers and magazines. The compartment is designed for ease of removing the contents for transportation to collection points. I he compartment has a hinged lid.
The foot pedal 16 is designed to operate as a simple lever with its fulcrum at the base of the bin. The pedal is designed to allow compression of objects i.e. cardboard boxes or other packaging, plastic bottles and mixed cans without direct contact of the foot with the object. The pedal is also designed to allow for compression of objects by the wheel of a wheelchair. The pedal is designed to be clipped into its upright position when not in use.
The compartment 7 is designed for storing cardboard, brown envelopes and yellow pages. The compartment has a hinged lid. The storage unit 11 can be removed for ease of transportation to collection points.
The compartment 8 is designed for storing plastic bottles. The compartment has a hinged lid. The storage unit 12 can be removed for ease of transportation to collection points.
The compartment 9 is designed for storing mixed cans. The compartment has a hinged lid. The storage unit 13 can be removed for ease of transportation to collection points.
The storage unit 14 is designed for storing batteries. The storage unit sits in the foot at the base of the bin and is designed to be relatively child-safe i.e. batteries once inserted in the top of the unit through the opening are relatively difficult to gain access to or remove. The storage unit can be removed for ease of transportation to collection points. The storage unit has a hinged lid that can be opened by an adult in order to remove the waste.
The storage unit 15 is designed for storing ink cartridges. The storage unit sits in the foot at the base of the bin and is designed to be relatively child-safe i.e. ink cartridges once inserted in the top of the unit through the opening are relatively difficult to gain access to or remove. The storage unit can be removed for ease of transportation to collection points. The storage unit has a hinged lid that can be opened by an adult in order to remove the waste.
