Abstract
239,722. Ehrenthal, B. P. von, and Scholz, K. Oct. 7, 1924. Retting.-In obtaining cottonized fibres from hemp, flax, nettles, and the like, the suitably pre. pared material is squeezed or beaten and simultaneously treated with warm or cold water or liquid chemicals such as soda lye. It is then stretched while wet, in a cold or warm condition, whereby the individual cells are extracted from the cell conglomeration and the individual cells separated and the incrustations and adhesive substances removed in a warm or cold condition by jets of water directed against one or both sides of the fibres in fleece form. The cottonized fibrous cells so obtained may be dried, or first bleached, impregnated, roughened, dyed, or otherwise treated in known manner. The stretching may be effected by usual drawing rollers, Fig. 1. which may be immersed in liquid, or the first pair of rollers may be replaced by a drum w, Fig. 5a, having a step feed and provided at its periphery with movable bars t co-operating with a ram r moved up and down by a cam. The ends of the bars t run in grooves in end rings having pockets 107 into which the ends may be depressed under the action of the ram r, springs 108 raising them again when the ram r is lifted. The jets of water may be applied to the fleece 100, Fig. 10. on one or both sides by hollow rollers 105 supplied with water and having inclined slots 103. Fig. 11 shows a modification where squirting members 201 are provided with jets 200, coarse-meshed supporting cloths 104 being used with pressure bars 203. These bars may be replaced by gripping rollers and the cloths may be dispensed with. The fleece may be fed by a metal conveyer 300, Fig. 14, to spring-mounted wooden rams 302 operated by staggered cams 304 and striking against tables 306, jets 310, supplying water or liquid chemicals, being arranged between the rams.
