Abstract
A protection device 1 for motorcycle exhaust silencer 9;. The device 1 reduces damage to the silencer 9 in the event of an accident. The invention consists of two component pads held in place around the ends of the exhaust silencer 9 by a retaining clamp 6. In the event of a crash the exhaust silencer 9 if held away from the abrasive road surface 10 by the device(s). In the event of an accident the exhaust silencer 9 with the device 1 fitted is dragged over the abrasive road surface 10 by the momentum of the crashing motorcycle. The device absorbs the abrasive and damaging effect of the road surface 10. The device can be included as pad of the silencer design or produced as a separate item for attachment to an exhaust silencer. It may be produced in any colour, opacity or with any coloured patterns and made from any suitable material.
Description
MOTORCYCLE EXHAUST PROTECTOR
The invention concerns a device, which offers protection for a motorcycle exhaust system from accidental damage.
A motorcycle exhaust system is an expensive and vulnerable part of the vehicle, which easily sustains damage in the event of an accident. Damage often occurs to the silencer section of the exhaust system and is cause by the silencer being dragged along the road surface under the weight and momentum of the motorcycle. The object of this invention is to provide damage limitation to the silencer section of the motorcycle exhaust system, by preventing the said silencer coming into direct contact with the an abrasive surface in the event of an accident.
Accordingly, this invention provides a device which affixes to the motorcycle exhaust silencer either as an aftermarket component or during manufacture. The device provides protection for the silencer by absorbing the abrasive effect of the a surface against the motorcycle exhaust silencer in the event of an accident.
The resultant damage is limited to this device and reduces, if not eliminates any damage which would normally occur to silencer should the device not be fitted.
Essentially the device consists of protectors or over riders, which hold the exhaust silencer away from the abrasive surface during the accident. As a motorcycle slides across a road surface the protectors absorb the abrasive effect of the road surface, preventing the silencer itself from coming into contact with the road surface and sustaining damage.
Preferably the device would be made primarily of plastic, metal and fibre but it may instead be made from metal, wood, glass or other composite materials or combination thereof.
The preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows a side view of an exhaust silencer with the protector device fitted to either end of the said silencer and resting on an uneven abrasive surface. FIGURE 2 shows the two main component parts of the protector device. One or more protector devices are required for each exhaust silencer.
FIGURE 3 shows a retaining clamp used to hold the two components of the protector device together around an exhaust silencer.
FIGURE 4 shows an end view of an exhaust silencer with the protector device fitted. All drawings are not to scale Figure 1 shows a side view of a motorcycle exhaust silencer 9 with protector devices 1. The protector components are held in place at each end of the exhaust silencer 9 by retaining clamp 6. The exhaust silencer 9 with the protector devices 1 is resting on uneven abrasive surface 10. The protector devices 1 are providing a protection gap 11, preventing the exhaust silencer 9 from coming into contact with the damaging surface 10.
As shown in figure 2 the protector device 1 uses two component parts 2,3. A recess 4 holds the retaining clamp 6. The retaining clamp 6 holds the two component parts 2, 3 together and in contact with the exhaust silencer 9. Recess 5 enables the components 2, 3 to maintain a good contact with the exhaust silencer 9, where the exhaust silencer 9 end components sit proud of the main silencer body. The inner surface 7 of the two components 2, 3 are covered with a heat insulating material, to protect the device from the heat of the exhaust silencer 9.
Figure 3 shows retaining clamp 6, which is mounted into the recess 4 of the two protector components 2, 3. The size of the diameter of this retaining clamp 6 is adjustable by means of tightening screw 13 in mechanism 8. Resulting in protector components 2, 3 being held firmly against the exhaust silencer 9 by means of this tightened clamp 6.
Figure 4 shows an end view of the exhaust silencer 9 with tail pipe 12. The protector components 2, 3 are held in place by retaining clamp 6 The retaining clamp 6, its tightening screw 13, and mechanism 8 are concealed from view by recess 4 on the devices component parts 2,3 in which the retaining clamp 6 is seated. Example. A motorcycle exhaust silencer 9 is protected from damage caused by movement over the abrasive road surface 10 by the protector device 1, in the event of an accident. The protector components 2,3 hold the exhaust silencer away from the damaging road surface 10, limiting damage to the protector components 2,3 themselves.
