Abstract
A securing device which is foldable (figure 4) and portable has a box section body <B>1</B>, a steel helix <B>3</B> and a spike <B>2</B>. In use the helix <B>3</B> is wound into the ground whilst the spike <B>2</B> is in a folded position, and then the hinged spike <B>2</B> is inserted into the ground, finally a padlock is passed through the body of the device which locks it into place. The padlock provides a locking point for a chain or cable to secure any belongings. The body of the device may also house an audible alarm triggered by movement.
Description
SECURING DEVICE
The invention relates to a securing device, which is portable and foldable, and should be wound into the ground to become an anchoring point for personal belongings. The device can also house an audible alarm for added security.
When camping in a field there is a need for securing personal property, but by the
nature of camping, there are no anchoring points to lock items to, ie. bicycles; or expensive motorcycle clothing inside a tent.
The object of this invention is to provide a portable securing point in the middle of a field where normally there would be no other way of securing personal property.
Accordingly, this invention provides such a securing point for belongings. The device is wound clockwise into the ground, then the hinged spike is inserted into the ground, after which a padlock is passed through the body of the device which locks it. The padlock will then also provide a locking point for a chain or steel cable, which is positioned through the shackle of the padlock, enabling you to secure your belongings. In addition, the body of the device can also house an audible alarm triggered by movement.
Preferably, all parts of this device, apart from the plastic end caps are to be made from steel, although some parts could be made from aluminium.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which; FIGURE I shows a side view of the device in an unfolded position.
FIGURE 2 shows a view of the underside of the device in an unfolded position.
FIGURE 3 shows an end view of the device with plastic end cap removed.
FIGURE 4 is a view of the device in its folded position.
FIGURE 5 shows the device positioned in a cross section of ground in the unfolded locked position with a padlock through the body.
As shown in Figure I the device comprises of a box section body 1 which is attached to part 7 of the body by a bolt 5, this passes through the body 7 and is retained by a nut. Because joint 14 is curved, where part 7 of the body meets part lof the body, it then enables body I to pivot up and down from bolt 5.
The steel spiral or helix 3 is fixed into part 7 of the body by welding. Use body l as a handle to drive the helix 3 into the ground, by turning handle (body 1) in a clockwise direction. The spike 2 would be in the folded position at this stage, laying against the body 1. The arrow on Figure I shows the direction in which the spike 2 folds from the pivot point 8 towards the body 1. The helix 3 is driven into the ground using a clockwise motion and applying downward pressure.
When the helix 3 has been fully wound into the ground so that part 7 of the body is hard against the ground, part I of the body is pivoted up from point 5 which allows the spike 2 to be swung down into the open position, then pressure is applied to the body 1 and the spike 2 is driven into the ground.
The device is then locked by passing a padlock through the locking holes 4 which are drilled through side plates I I &( 13 Fig. 2) and the body part 7. In doing this, it locks the body 1, and stops it from being lifted and also stops the spike 2 being drawn out of the ground. Therefore, the helix 3 cannot be turned anti-clockwise to remove it from the ground.
Figure 2 shows a view of the underside of the device. A slot is cut in the body I to allow the spike 2 to be moved into the folded position. A steel pin 8 secures the spike to the body by passing through a tube welded to the body end of the spike 2, allowing it to pivot. The pin 8 is welded to the body I. The body pivot bolt 5 is shown clearly passing through the body. Also, an end on view of the helix 3 is shown. Parts 9 and 10 are plastic end caps. Side plates 13 and 11 are welded on to the body 1.
As shown in Figure 3, the end view with the plastic end cap 9 removed, the box section of the body I can clearly be seen. The tube welded onto the spike 2 inside the body I can also be seen.
Figure 4 shows the device in its folded position. This allows the device to be carried or transported much easier. The locking holes 4 can be seen in side plates 11 and body part 7.
A cross section of ground is shown in Figure 5, showing the device positioned accordingly, locked and secured with a padlock. This will allow a chain or steel cable to be attached to the padlock, to enable you to secure belongings. A key switch 15 is shown in the body 1 which is used to activate and de-activate the audible alarm, this is housed inside the body I. The alarm is triggered by motion, so if the device is tampered with, it will be set off. The position of the key switch 15 is shown in the top of the body 1, but it could also be positioned in the end or side of the body, (This alarm may be included as an optional extra) .
The device is foldable as shown in Figure 4 and is anchored into the ground by means of a helix 3. The body 1 is a box section and is used as a handle for winding the helix 3 into the ground. A pivoting spike 2 is situated at the opposite end of the body I to the helix 3. The spike 2 is driven into the ground to stop the helix 3 from being removed, by turning it anti-clockwise. The device is locked by means of a padlock passing through the body. The padlock also provides the securing point for a chain or steel cable. An audible alarm can also be housed inside the body 1. A key switch 15, on the body 1 is used to switch the alarm on and off, see Figure 5.
In order to remove the device from the locked position, the padlock has to be unlocked and removed from the body 1. Pull body I upwards, exposing spike 2, and fold spike 2 against body 1. Then turn the handle (body 1) in an anti-clockwise direction to remove helix 3 from the ground. The device can then be folded into its preferred carrying position, as shown in Figure 4.
Claims (6)
1. A securing device which comprises of a folding steel spike and box section body with a helix, the folding body is lockable, portable and provides a securing point for property which can also include an integral audible alarm.
2. A securing device as claimed in claim I where the body and spike folds to make the device more portable.
3. A securing device as claimed in claim I or 2 where a helix and a spike are used to anchor the device into the ground.

4. A securing device as claimed in claim 2 or 3 where the folding box section body is locked in position by a padlock, which also provides a securing point for a chain or steel cable.
5. A securing device as claimed in any preceding claim, which can have an integral audible alarm which is housed inside the body.
6. A securing device substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings Figure 1 to 5.
