Abstract

An anti-theft device comprises a strap 2 or chain having a spring-loaded and screw locking clip at each end 1,3. One end of the strap may be secured to the gear lever or gear shift 5 of a vehicle and the other to a handbag, briefcase, purse or the like 8. Alternatively, the strap may have its two end clips attached to hooks mounted on opposite interior sides of a vehicle with the strap being passed through the handles of a plurality of bags. In use, each clip takes several seconds to lock or unlock and the anti-theft device serves to slow down or deter the opportunistic thief who steals handbags, briefcases, luggage or the like from vehicles whilst the owner is distracted.

Description

BAG-SAFE
The invention relates to a basic three part assembly with an option of an extra anchorage kit for the boot of a car or back of a people carrier, estate or van.
The idea behind the invention is to deter the opportunist thief from stealing handbags, briefcases, luggage etc from cars while the rightful owner is distracted.
Once BAG-SAFE is secured at one end to the gear stick or anchorage hooks, and at the other to bags, briefcases or anchorage hooks, it would take too long for a thief to release his targeted goods, thereby giving the owner the opportunity to realise what is happening and act appropriately.
BAG-SAFE can be left in the vehicle, attached to the gear stick or anchorage kit at one end for ease of use, it takes about 3 second to attach a handbag or briefcase etc. BAG-SAFE can also be easily transported on holidays, business trips or simply when travelling in a different car. When using with luggage and the anchorage kit is not available, simply link the strap or chain through the handles of the luggage and attach the two clips together making a continuous loop. Most thieves won't be able to carry all the bags at one time! BAG-SAFE comes with its own strap or chain and allows more than one bag to be transported in safety at a time. The straps usual length of 60cm allows a handbag to travel safely in the front passenger area or behind the front seats but it is not long enough for the bag to be pulled from the car.
BAG-SAFE clips and straps can be supplied in a range of colours and the strap is fully machine-washable, and available in lengths other than the standard length mentioned above.
I have invented BAG-SAFE following an incident in which my handbag and all its contents were stolen from my car. The thief had punctured to rear tyre and, while I was changing the wheel (central locking systems more often than not, don't work when you have the boot open and I don't know of anybody who would have their bag with them at such a time - it would only get in the way) the thief got into the car and stole my bag. It has taken months organising new passport, driving licence, etc., etc., and a great deal of money replacing the other things that I can replace, not to mention the emotional upset such an incident brings. I have heard of 5 other women this has happened to since my bag was stolen and I decided to try and do something positive about it and hopefully, stop at least some thieves getting away with it in the future.

Fig 3: Spring closing, screw locking clip showing hook and bar closets.
Fig 4: Optional anchorage kit (x 2 hooks) for fitting to the side of a car boot van etc. Fig 5: Spring closing, screw locking clip in closed position showing that once the screw lock is closed, it covers the area where the clip and spring closing rod come together, making removal of the bag etc., impossible without taking time to unlock the mechanism and drawing attention to the would-
be-thief. Page 2: Shows how the assembled Bag-safe attaches to a car gear stick and handbag (as an example) Page 3: Shows how the assembled Bagsafe attaches to hooks mounted in the rear interior of a vehicle
