Abstract
A surface mounted lintel (1) which comprises one or two plates preferably having two rows of regularly spaced apertures (2) therein, the rows being offset such that the apertures form a repeating triangular pattern. The plates may be made from metal and treated to be corrosion resistant. In use at least one plate of the lintel is fitted to a wall (6) to support the wall whilst an opening (3) is formed in the wall below the plate, so that the use of additional props is not necessary.
Description
( SURFACE MOUNTED LINTEL
The lintel relates to a metal plate or pair of plates fixed to the face of an existing wall by means of anchor bolts or plugs and bolts or chemical fixings or a combination of these so that an opening may be formed in the wall.
During building renovation works it is often required to form new openings in walls.ln order to achieve this the wall above the proposed opening is normally temporarily supported by an arrangement of steels and props. After the props are in place the required size apperture is formed in the wall together with extra space for a lintel to be inserted. The lintel is placed and "dry-pack" sand/cement is packed into any remaining voids up to the existing wall. After a period of time to allow the packing to harden, the steels and props are removed and the wall made good. This procedure is both costly and time consuming.
The object of this invention is to alleviate the necessity of steels and props, insert lintels, delays in pack hardening and making good.
( This nventon provides a metal plate or pair of ates, dependng on wale Apes a size relative to the proposed openingThe plates include bales at mpular, staggered intervals for fiend purposes. When fixed to the face of a wall the new opening In immediately be Schemed without the ,eed For arm temporary supports or lintel insed.
The invention would preferrably be made from s - J plate and treated for anfi<orrosion.
preferred embodiment the invention shall now be described with reference to the accompariying drawings in wash FluRE Shows front eleva6.ic,, of plate in place FIGURE Shows section through plate and slandered -100mm wall.

( Figure 1 shows the plate 1 surface mounted on the wall with fixings at regular and staggered intervals. The length of the plate 1 must be greater than the proposed opening 3 by the bearing lengths 4.An area of any existing plaster 5 is removed prior to the plate being fixed. The plate and bolts should therefore be hidden when the plaster is made good.
Figure 2 shows a section through the plate 1 and a single skin of wall 6. Note the area of removed plaster 5.The fixings 2 should be of sufficient length to transmit the tensile properties of the plate to the compressive properties of the wall.
Figure 3 shows a section through a pair of plates 1 fixed to a thicker wall 7.Note that the staggered intervals of the plate holes are such that pairs of fixing shall not coincide.
Figure 4 shows a section through a pair of plates 1 fixed to a cavity wall 8.
Figure 5 shows an elevation of a plate used to facilitate the widening of an existing opening 9.Note that the length of the plate is greater than the opening 9 by the extra width 10 plus the bearing lengths 4.The existing lintel 11 remains in place-it too being supported by the plate.
Figure 6 shows an elevation of a plate used to facilitate the moving of an existing opening 9 to a new position 12.Note that the plate length is greater than the opening 9 by the diffrential 13 plus the bearing lengths 4.
