Abstract

A sunshade or awning 10 is supported by a single pole 1, which is connected to the wall by a base plate 5, and supported by a rope or wire 7 which is attached to the wall. The fabric awning 10, which maybe kept in shape by a series of rigid rods 10A, may be held in place and moved by means of ropes 11 and pulleys 12, and may be located onto the pole by a cup shaped pocket 10C. The main pole may have a mechanism 2 for easy detachment from the base plate, and a second awning may be attached on the opposite side of the pole 1.

Description

PATIO AWNING
The invention relates to a patio awning of various shapes and colours which is supported by a single pole or mast which is connected to a wall by a screw fixed metal base plate. The mast is also supported in the vertical plane by a wire halyard fixed to a wall by an appropriate means.
The awning provides a deep projection of shade from the wall which can be rotated horizontally to follow the arc of the sun rather than having to keep moving furniture into the shade.
As the awning is wall fixed there is no requirement for support being provided by furniture or heavy weights. Due to the light weight and cantilever principles employed the depth of shade provided from the wall is greater than conventional wall fixed awnings.
When a single awning is fixed to the masts the awning and mast can be rotated horizontally. This is achieved by adjustment of two pulley ropes fixed either side of the awning which also hold the awning firmly in position to resist the action of the wind.
One rope is secured to a corner of the awning and the other rope is secured to the mast.
Each rope passes through a pulley block fixed to a wall by an appropriate means, back through the mast and awning fixing and then downward through a cleat fixed to a wall by an appropriate means which secures the ropes which in turn secures the awning.
l'o adjust the position of the awning one rope is slackened off and the other rope is pulled tight which has the effect of rotating the awning horizontally over the area requiring shade.
The purpose of this movement is to be able to reposition the awning when the sun has moved across the sky thereby providing constant shade over the area required.
When two awnings are fixed either side of the mast the position is fixed and the wire halyard is substituted with a rigid strut to resist the action of the wind.
The whole assembly is constructed from durable fabric for the awning, a carbons metal or plastic masts painted metal brackets corrosion proof metal fittings and nylon braided rope.
The awning will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure I shows the whole assembly from above.
Figure 2 shows an exploded view of the mast foot and mast base wall fixing assembly.
Figure 3 Shows the mast, mast Foote mast base and wall fixing assembly complete with securing rope.
Figure 4 shows a typical wall fixed pulley block.
Figure 5 shows a typical cleat for securing the ropes to the wall.
Figure 6 shows how the wire halyard and pulley rope are secured to the mast
As shown in figures I - 6 the awning comprises of a horizontal two piece mast (1) which is slotted over a mast foot fitting (2) which in turn clips over a metal spigot bonded to a rubber universal joint (3) The universal joint has a threaded rod in the opposite side which passes through a plastic spreader plate (4) and then through a metal base plate (5) The threaded rod is secwed to the base plate by a metal nut. (3A) The mast is supported vertically by a wall fixed wire halyard (7) which is fixed to the mast via a spring clip which clips onto a metal ring on a metal bracket (9) which is bolted to the mast.
The awning ( I O) is stiffened by nylon battens secured in batten pockets ( I OA) which are sewn onto the awning. The battens are secured by plastic buckles (l OB) sewn onto the ends of the batten pockets. The awning is hooked over the top of the mast by a cupped canvas pocket (I OC) fixed onto the end of the awning.
The bottom of the awning is secured and tensioned by threading a rope through the eyelet (IOD) and back through the pulley block attached to the mast foot assembly (2) The rope is secured by a cleat fixed to the mast foot assembly (2) The rope (I I) is attached to the corner of the awning through the eyelet ( lOE), threaded through the wall fixed pulley block ( l 2) back through the eyelet ( I OK) and then through the cleat ( 13) where the rope is secured.
The rope (14) attached to the mast via bracket (9) is threaded through the wall fixed pulley block ( 15) back through the mast bracket (9) and then through the wall fixed cleat ( l 6) where the rope is secured.
