  • a fourth object of the invention consists of an absorption device permitting the smooth opening/closing of a canvas, an “anti-twist” device.
  • This device offers a twist margin that will not block sliding of the guide elements in the lateral parallel grooves of the upper frame of the modular structure. For example, if the guide and sliding elements are casters below, blockage of the casters is avoided when the canvas has been operated in an uneven manner.
  • the absorption principle is characterized by sliding tubes at the ends of the bottom tubes on which casters are installed, the latter permit the necessary extension of the sliding tubes during twisting to avoid any blockage.

    • two attachment members to be inserted into the canvas and located on the ends of the canvas, said members comprising a device allowing the canvas to be maintained in the deployed state,
      the members of the first and second type being alternately arranged in parallel when they are inserted in the canvas, so as to form an “accordion” configuration.
The application also includes modular structures, means of attachment as well as assemblies thereof.

Description

    CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
  • The present patent application claims priority of the Canadian patent application no. 2,920,207 file on Feb. 4, 2016, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety.
  • FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • This invention relates to a modular structure consisting of a small number of structural unit elements, each of the structural unit elements is comprised of at least one longitudinal groove with a similar profile, but potentially of different lengths. The modular structure is self-supporting or can be partially supported by the support of a supporting wall. This modular structure can be equipped with a folding roof to create a cover such as a canopy or pergola.
  • The present invention also relates to a unitary structural element having a particular profile ensuring multifunctionality and allowing the easy addition of other functionalities. This element, potentially of different lengths, allows creation of a modular and multifunctional structure, with the option of being completely self-supporting.
  • The invention also relates to a canvas for shade and protection against rain, with a particular form and configuration, which can be installed on a frame-type structure. The canvas is distinctive because of its particular shape, which is characterized by an arrangement of pleats and slopes reminiscent of an accordion.
  • The invention is also comprised of the modular structure of the invention furnished with at least one canvas of the invention.
  • The invention also consists of an absorption device allowing the smooth opening/closing of a canvas in a frame, when connected in a frame with lateral and interior grooves on at least two parallel sides of the frame.
  • The invention is also related to a modular structural assembly comprising at least two modular structures according to the invention and to a modular assembly of canopies comprising a modular assembly of canopies comprising at least two modular structures of the invention of which at least one of the modular structures includes a canvas.
  • The present invention also relates to a semi-automatic tension system for folded canvases, in particular for canvases of the type of the invention.
  • The present invention also relates to multifunctional fasteners which allow different removable accessories to be attached to one of the grooves of the modular structure.
  • The present invention also involves the methods to manufacture at least one of the unit elements of the invention, at least one of the modular structures of the invention, as well as the methods to manufacture at least one of the modular assemblies of the invention.
  • This invention also relates to the methods to assemble the modular structures of the invention equipped with a retractable or non-retractable canvas, as well as the methods to use the modular assemblies of the invention equipped with a retractable or non-retractable canvas.
  • The invention also relates to the uses of modular structures and modular assemblies of the invention, and in particular their use in the fields of temporary and permanent covers, decorative or for weather protection, garden shelters, pergola, gazebo, canopies, greenhouses, spa covers, removal spa covers, on frames, solarium, sun covers, rain covers, snow covers, sheds, outdoor kitchens, presentation kiosks, electric generator tents equipped with canvas comprising photoelectric cells, and survival tents in particular for disaster areas and for the army.
  • PRIOR ART
  • EP 2565342 describes a canopy which includes a canvas with a plurality of folds (4) substantially parallel that can be moved along a slide direction (Y) substantially orthogonal to the extension direction (X) of the folds (4), between at least one retracted position (A), in which the folds (4) are located near each other, and at least one extended position (B), in which the folds (4) are at least partially extended above the area to be covered (5). Each of the folds (4) is delimited by at least one bottom fold (6) and by at least two first folds (7) between which one drain channel (9) is defined which is oriented transversely to the slide direction (Y) of the canvas (3) and provided with at least one slope toward a lateral side (3′) of the canvas (3). The awning includes at least two pairs of tie rods (10′, 10″), including an upper part (10′) and a lower (10″ tie rod), attached at their ends to the awning support structure (2). The tie rods (10′, 10″), are preferably substantially extended in parallel and arranged one above the other in the slide direction (Y) of the canvas (3) at its side edges (3′). These are connected through sliding with the lateral ends of the first folds (7) with the upper connecting rods (10′) and with the lateral ends of the bottom folds (6) with the lower tie rods (10″). The tie rods (10′ and 10″) are spaced apart, when the cloth (3) is in a collected position (A), to a greater amount than when the cloth (3) is deployed (B) by an average distance creating elastic tension of locations (4) of the canvas in the said extended position (B).
  • AT 13584 describes an awning (15) with a membrane (16) that can be moved between a surface awning vault position (U) and a storage position (A) at least partially folded in one movement direction (B). It can be moved, with a guide mechanism (17), comprising upper guide rails (18) and upper tension elements (27) and lower tension elements (28), in which the upper tension elements (27) are connected at the two ends equipped with an upper slide (20) that is mounted along one of the upper guide rails (18).
  • EP 2 284 330 describes a folding awning (1) comprising at least one pair of cross members (5a, 5b), being movable along at least one pair of guides (4) between a first, gathered, position and a second, extended, position, and a canvas (6) extending between said pair of cross members (5a, 5b) and secured thereto, said canvas comprising at least one drainage section (11a, 5b) in which the length of said canvas (6) in a plane (XY) transverse to the pair of cross members (5a, 5b) is greater than the distance between said cross members (5a, 5b) so as to form a drainage channel (12) between the cross members (5a, 5b), and the awning (1) comprising, at least one means of tensioning (20) secured to said canvas (6) at one or more securing points (21) in the region of said drainage channel (12), so as to place the canvas (6) under tension in at least the second, extended, position.
  • FR 2 840 339 describes a folding modular structure for a cover such as a terrace or pergola. The modular structure consists of a sealed tarpaulin (1) on a support frame (2), extended according to its width (2a) with a constant length (2b). The tarpaulin is folded into pleats (1a-1b) to provide alternative slopes along the width so as to allow for alternating folding of the pleats and the dispersal of rainwater on each side of the frame width, which is placed horizontally. The tarpaulin has eyelets (4) through which pass support cables (3) held along the length of the frame allowing the tarpaulin to slide. Mountings (5a) are connected to a slide (5b) on each of the widths (2a), so that the tarpaulin slides along the cables (3) and the slides (5b) allow it to be spread out
  • There was a need for a modular shelter structure, in particular one that is foldable and lacks at least one of the shortcomings of structures of prior art
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • One object is an accordion-type folding canvas comprising:
      • a plurality of members of a first type, said members to be inserted into said canvas, said members of the first type comprising, at each end, a means for sliding or moving to be inserted into a structure. The said members of said first type having a sliding device so as to be able to modify their length during said sliding or movement, in this way preventing blocking.
      • a plurality of members of a second type, said members to be inserted into said canvas, said members of the second type being flexible so as to allow formation of a flow curve when said canvas is extended.
      • two attachment members, for inserting into the canvas and located on the ends of the canvas, said attachment members comprising a device allowing the canvas to be maintained in a deployed position,
  • said members of the first type and second type to be alternately arranged, in parallel, when they are inserted in the canvas, so as to form an “accordion” configuration, when the canvas is in a folded or extended position, said attachment members replacing said members of the second type in alternation at said ends of the canvas.
  • Another object is an accordion-type folding canvas comprising:
      • a plurality of members of a first type, said members to be inserted into said canvas, said members of the first type comprising, at each end, a means of movement to be inserted into a structure, the said members of said first type having a sliding device so as to be able to modify their length during said movement,
      • a plurality of members of a second type, said members to be inserted into said canvas, said members of the second type being flexible so as to allow formation of a flow curve,
      • two attachment members, to be inserted into said canvas and located on the ends of the canvas, said attachment members being attached in a fixed manner to a structure in order to maintain said canvas in a deployed position, and
  • said members of the first and second types to be alternately arranged in parallel when they are inserted in the canvas, so as to form an “accordion” configuration.
  • Another object is a structure comprising:
      • a canvas; and
      • at least two support members, said support members each comprising at least one groove, said groove to receive said means of sliding or moving of said members of said first type of said canvas in order to maintain said canvas and allow it to move between a folded position and an extended position.
  • Another object is a structure comprising:
      • a canvas, as defined in the present application; and
      • at least two support members, said support members each comprising at least one groove to receive said means of sliding or moving of said members of the first type of said canvas in order to maintain said canvas and allow it to move between a folded position and an extended position.
  • Another object is a means of attachment comprising:
      • a screw which is generally rectangular comprising two rounded corners at the ends of one diagonal and two right angle corners at the ends of a second diagonal;
      • a support comprising a hole for a screw, said screw to be screwed to said nut, passing through said support, so as to attach the object between said support and said screw; and
      • a strip to be positioned between said screw and said support, said strip comprising a hole for said screw, said strip being of a size to prevent said support from rotating when said screw is introduced into said support and into the nut
  • Another object is an assembly comprising:
      • at least one support member, one cross member and/or a vertical rod described herein and
      • at least one means of attachment described herein, said nut to be inserted in said groove of said support member, cross member and/or vertical rod, between two edges on either side of an opening in said groove, so as to attach the two edges between said nut and said support when said screw is screwed into said nut, said first diagonal of said nut being shorter than the width of said groove, said second diagonal of said nut being longer than the width of said groove.

  • GENERAL DEFINITION OF THE INVENTION
  • Introduction
  • The invention is a structure consisting of a minimized number of unit elements constituting the structure after assembly. The constituting unit elements, which have the advantage of a constant rectangular or square section along their length, include in one of its sides at least one interior groove which provides the invention with a plurality of options and/or functionalities that connects with at least one of the faces of the unit element. The structure of the invention is modular, flexible, self-supporting or can be attached to a support, such as a wall.
  • The modularity of the structure allows for various configurations and positions.
  • Corner connectors, in particular in the form of a cross and/or a T allow the structure to have different sizes and shapes. Through the originality of their structure, these corner connectors, potentially with decorative and/or protective elements which are added to them, also constitute an object of the invention.
  • The grooves located in the unit elements allow for positioning of the different decorative and/or functional options/accessories, in particular options/accessories of a type that can be retrofitted, easily or not.
  • The structure of the invention is easy to install, requires no specialized labour and can be installed in a few minutes.
  • The corner connectors have the advantage of being structurally reinforced and do not necessarily require the addition of additional stays, particularly to reinforce the structure.
  • Several types of roofs and curtain walls and/or privacy panels can be easily installed on the modular structure of the invention, whether they are roofs, walls or curtains that are permanent rigid types, flexible or retractable, manual or automatic.
  • Opening and/or closing the retractable roof can, for example, be done by turning a crank, pulling a cable or by hand.
  • In the case of a roof positioned and connected with the structure, it is possible to add to the structure an automatic roof closing and/or opening system, according to the invention, e.g. by cable and counterweight, elastic spring, rubber or bent fibreglass and canvas design, whether hidden by the structure or not, or automatically or manually locking at one of the 2 ends or both.
  • The curve of the roof discharges water from each side or from just one side. A water-collection gutter can be installed optionally. The roof, whether retractable or not, can be dismantled in several sections for compact or maximum packing, also being an original aspect of the invention. The caster system, with or without ball bearings, slides the length of the structural groove.
  • A side slide system which can be disassembled, provided with rigid support rods, which can fit together or not, also part of the invention, prevents the system from getting jammed during opening and closing movements. The absorption by the rods and/or screws and/or tubes can be operated in combination or independently to correct the trajectory of the canvas.
  • The adjusted or permissive casters prevent the rod from becoming locked in the groove. The guide cable, runner or rigid rod ensures a functional and/or aesthetic straight line of the canvas.
  • A first object of the invention consists of a self-supporting structure and by unitary structural elements of the base structure.
  • The self-supporting structure is comprised of profiles, created, e.g. through aluminum extrusion. The self-supporting structure can in an advantageous embodiment of the invention use only one type of profile to create its entire structure, this profile can potentially vary in terms of its length to accommodate the use desired (feet, beams, cross-elements, reinforcements, supports) The profile uses e.g. a square or rectangular form and has the advantage of a groove, preferably central on each of the large side faces of the profile.
  • The groove acts as a support element that can receive the options and assemblies anticipated as additions to the structure, being developed specifically for this use. The groove used for an example as illustrated in the preferred embodiment below, a T-insertion principle which allows the hardware developed as part of the project to serve as support
  • Nevertheless, the necessary use of this groove does not limit the shape, different principles of grooves can be used in the same way with a different profile.
  • The structure is assembled with a corner principle (connectors) which serve as attachment point between the main profiles of the structure. These original connectors also constitute an aspect of the invention. This assembly (mechanical-welding assembly of the connectors) supports the horizontal beams of the structure while fitting into the feet of the structure. Assembly of the connector has the advantage of being hidden by an ornamental cap which also maintains aesthetics, e.g. cubic, of the structure.
  • The connector, which contains at least as many rods as directions to be connected with another structural element according to a preferred embodiment is assembled so as to orient its rods in the X, Y and Z axial directions. The rods are then inserted in the centre of the main profile of the structure. According to a preferred embodiment, insertions drawn through each of the rods have the advantage of allowing mechanical assembly of the profiles to the connectors. Different variants of connectors are also part of the invention, invented to allow connection of several modular structures of the invention which would have the advantage of using the same support point (foot). Versions with 3, 4 and 5 branches have been developed to allow multiple arrangements, called assemblies with regard to this invention.
  • The modular structure of the invention, also called principle structure on which options/accessories are grafted, comprises a very limited quantity of parts, which facilitates inventory management and manufacture. The profile and connectors were developed so as to allow as many arrangements as possible without any modification to the parts, no customized or specialized manufacture is required for a certain type of structural arrangement. The project is entirely modular.
  • A second aspect of the invention consists of a canvas for shade and protection against rain which can be installed as an option on the structure. The canvas is distinctive because of its particular shape which is characterized by an arrangement of pleats and slopes reminiscent of an accordion.
  • Structured, e.g. by tubes with sliding casters that are inserted in the upper tips of the accordion as well as by flexible rods that are installed in the lower tips, the canvas offers some rigidity and consistency in shape. The sliding aspect of the canvas allows it to be opened and closed, providing flexibility of use.
  • In a preferred embodiment, bottom casters have the advantage of sliding within the groove of the main extrusion profile to provide its opening/closing movement The flexible rods inserted in the lower tips of the canvas have guide heads, preferably of eyelet type which slide on a taut cable so as to guide the canvas and avoid twisting as much as possible during movement The flexible rods inserted in the lower tips also serve to structure the canvas with a flow curve that guides water to the sides of the structure to prevent accumulation and ensure the structure is completely waterproof.
  • Following an advantageous embodiment, the canvas can be entirely assembled and dismantled, and following an advantageous method assembled by inserting tubes and rods in pockets provided for this, to then be slid into the structure which requires no dismantling. Since the project is based on a modular principle, options must be installable after assembly of the structure. The sliding principle of the canvas could function following other cable principles, such as weighted, or a crank system and benefit from a gutter system to collect water that flows thanks to the flow curve.
  • A third object of the invention consists of a self-supporting or non-self-supporting modular structure according to object 1 of the invention equipped with at least one retractable or non-retractable canvas and by a self-supporting structure according to object 1 of the invention and equipped with at least one canvas according to object 2 of the invention.
  • A fourth object of the invention consists of an absorption device permitting the smooth opening/closing of a canvas, an “anti-twist” device. This device offers a twist margin that will not block sliding of the guide elements in the lateral parallel grooves of the upper frame of the modular structure. For example, if the guide and sliding elements are casters below, blockage of the casters is avoided when the canvas has been operated in an uneven manner. The absorption principle is characterized by sliding tubes at the ends of the bottom tubes on which casters are installed, the latter permit the necessary extension of the sliding tubes during twisting to avoid any blockage. The absorption device is advantageously installed on the canvas prior to installation on the structure. The advantage of the device is in its simplicity of assembly, limited number of parts and autonomous function which does not require particular maintenance or use. Use of the product is intuitive for the user with simple devices for use.
  • This device can also be based on a different principle, such as long screws that allow side movement of the casters and which would not require a sliding tube. According to another embodiment of the invention, use of larger casters offering more play once installed in the groove of the main profile.
  • A fifth object of this invention is a modular structural assembly and a modular assembly of canopies.
  • The invented principle of modularity allows creation of different variants of the cover.
  • The concept starts with a base structure which is the ALFA composition. This composition of tubular and connector length is the basis of the shape and functionality of the product This composition of parts can create infinite lengths and different bi- and tri-directional geometric forms. All that is needed to obtain the desired final product, is to add the desired options. Each connector piece must advantageously be installed in a homogeneous fashion, i.e. the connectors of the invention must preferably be attached with the same type of nuts, but especially advantageously at the same level. For example, the foot of a gazebo which is attached to the ground can also be installed on the horizontal beam and attached to a wall. For example, a foot serving as ground anchor can also be used instead of two of the four corner connectors, being inserted at the ends of the horizontal beams and then anchored in a vertical support (such as a wall). Some connectors of different shapes can be installed at any end of the structure and therefore extend the structure itself in several different directions.
  • Each option/accessory designed must be easily installed on the modular structure both with the initial installation and as a retrofit This means, allow in the context of the invention, installation of a new option or a new type of roof on the base structure without altering the components of the structure and even without taking it apart.
  • Each option must be therefore conceived in this way. Moreover, each option must be able to be shipped by courier and therefore must be maximized for shipping to the consumer. The product can be installed temporarily since it is very quick to install, or permanently since the product is of commercial quality.
  • A sixth object of this invention consists of tension mechanisms for retractable canvases.
  • The canvas is comprised of a waterproof or non-waterproof fabric, with aluminum rods as support, and fibreglass rods providing shape and body to the canvas. The aluminum tubes have casters at the ends and roll in the tube cavity. Opening of the canvas and its closing can be done in several ways.
  • Side curtains or side screens: to block the view or the wind or simply for aesthetics. Can be opened manually, automatically with a remote, or with a press button or controlled by a cell phone or motor.
  • Manual: by hand, detach the canvas and manually slide the canvas. With the anti-blocking system, the support rods do not have to be perfectly aligned in parallel. The rods will still slide.
  • Opening and closing by pulling or rolling a cable: one or several cables can be installed in the structure and activated using a counterweight or spring hidden or not in the structure. The action of pulling or rolling a cord can both open and close in the 2 cases.
  • A seventh object in this invention consists of multifunctional fasteners
  • With the goal of adapting several options to the structure, hardware was developed specially for the structure. The attachment system is designed to adapt to all attachment and installation needs and defines the shape of the principal profile of the structure. In the case of the retractable canvas, the fasteners act as supports for the guide cable tension system.
  • Fasteners consist of a right-angled extrusion profile which is installed on the outside of the groove of the principal profile and act as a support for the options. This support is maintained by a T-nut which is inserted into the groove and, once the assembly is screwed, makes a one-quarter turn to become blocked in the groove, providing pressure which fixes it in place while the screw is tightened. The advantage gained by this principle is the possibility of inserting fasteners into the groove of the structure without the latter being disassembled. The fastener is also equipped with an anti-rotation strip which allows it to stay parallel to the groove at all times, thereby avoiding sliding from starting.
  • Projected variants:
  • Nut without rotation which must be inserted by the ends of the structure profiles
  • Permanent hardware requiring drilling in structure profiles
  • Motorization: with the help of a motor, closing or opening of the roof and/or side curtains can be done by a manual switch, remote control or cell phone applications.
  • An eighth object of this invention consists of all processes to manufacture at least one of objects 1 to 7 of the invention as previously defined. Among these processes, in particular those utilizing known techniques of prior art, such as riveting, screwing, connecting, gluing, welding, clipping, etc.
  • A ninth object of this invention consists of the use of objects 1 to 7 of the invention as previously defined.
  • As examples, but not limited to, the use of object 1 as: temporary shelters, garden shelters, pergola, gazebo, greenhouse, spa shelters, removable spa cover, with structure, solarium, sun shades, rain shelters, snow shelters, shed, outdoor kitchen, presentation kiosk, electric generator tent equipped with canvas comprising photoelectric cells, and survival tent in particular for the army.
  • Advantages of Objects 1 to 7 of the Invention
  • Advantages noted with regard to previous art are the notable simplification of the system and mechanisms involved, in particular with regard to the following points:
      • assembly simplified to the point that anyone can rapidly assemble it without problems;
      • quick dismantling;
      • no specialized labour required;
      • the structure can be shipped by courier and is very compact;
      • the structure can be ordered in an infinite number of configurations;
      • the structure can be modified through retrofitting even several years after set-up
      • the system can evolve over time by changing certain components;
      • users can change the parts themselves and make repairs as needed;
      • for the same model chosen by a client, dozens of versions are possible, e.g. a rigid roof for which the run-off slope can be chosen, components of side walls that can be transformed into handrails;
      • side grooves can be used for several options, such as a lighting system with lights, water spray system, for gutters, to hide wires, provide a guide for a slide system;
      • universal fasteners, combined with the structure grooves allow for the solid attachment of any kind of product, part or other structure, they are used to solidify the structure, hold cables, install custom components;
      • depending on the options chosen, the structure can completely change style, e.g. from contemporary to Victorian, with the same base structure;
      • resist very strong winds, perfect for the seashore;
      • winter preparation of the product is very quick, taking less than 15 minutes;
      • can handle intensive use such as commercial type and is refined enough for the residential market; and
      • depending on options, can tolerate rain, glaze ice, and snow loads.

  • Structure (23) and Unit Elements (32) of the Base Structure
  • Referring to FIG. 1, the self-supporting structure (23) is comprised of profiles (32) created through aluminum extrusion. The structure uses a single profile to constitute its structure, the profile varies in length to accommodate the use desired (feet, beams, cross members, reinforcement, support). The profile (32) uses a square form comprised of a central longitudinal groove (17) on each of the faces of the resulting extrusion. As illustrated in FIGS. 29 and 30, the groove (17) acts as a support element that can hold the options and assemblies anticipated as additions to the self-supporting structure (23), the latter was developed specifically for this use. The groove (17) currently uses a T-insertion principle which allows the hardware developed with regard to the project to serve as support. Nevertheless, the necessary use of this groove does not limit its shape, different principles of grooves could be used in the same way with a different profile, for example, those represented in FIG. 29.
  • The structure (23) is assembled with a corner principle (connectors) (25-26-27) which serve as attachment points between the main profiles (32) of the structure (23) (see, for example, FIGS. 1 to 6B, 8, 9, 11, 16A to 19B, and 31). This mechanical-welding assembly of the connectors may be composed with the aluminum extrusion profiles (28) as illustrated in FIGS. 17A and 17B, in order to support the horizontal beams (support members and cross members) (14) of the structure while fitting into the feet (vertical rods) (15) of the structure (23). For example, assembly of the connector (25-26-27) is hidden by an ornamental cube (29) which also maintains the cubic aesthetic of the structure (FIGS. 17A and 17B). The connector (25-26-27) is assembled so as to orient its rods (28) in the X, Y and Z axial directions. The rods are then inserted in the centre (16) of the main profile (32) of the structure 23). For example, as illustrated in FIG. 17A, threaded insertions (31) can be present in each of the rods (28), which then allows a mechanical assembly of the profiles to the connectors using a screw. Different variants of connectors were developed to allow connection of several structures using the same support point (foot). Versions or assemblies with 3 (25), 4 (26) and 5 (27) branches have been developed to allow multiple arrangements.
  • The principal structure (23) comprises a very limited quantity of parts which facilitates inventory management and manufacture. The profile and connectors were developed so as to allow as many arrangements as possible without any modification to the constituent parts, no customized or specialized manufacture is required for a particular type of structural arrangement. The structures and the assemblies of the invention are entirely modular. For example, structure members (support and cross members) as well as feet (vertical rods) have an identical profile.
  • The structure is modular and can be used to support several objects, in particular a canvas for shade and rain protection, as described in the present application. Other types of canvas are envisaged, e.g. a flat or simple canvas for use as shelter against the sun (see for example FIG. 10).
  • Description of the Canvas (41)
  • Referring now to FIGS. 1, 2, 7-9 and 11, the shade and rain protection canvas (41) can be easily installed on the structure (23) as an option. The canvas (41) is distinctive because of its particular shape which is characterized by pleats (8) and slopes (9) reminiscent of an accordion principle (see for example FIG. 20). Referring to FIG. 22, the canvas can be, e.g. structured in the frame by tubes (members of the first type) (35) with sliding casters (38) which are inserted in the upper tips (12) of the accordion as well as by flexible rods (members of the second type) (45) which are installed in the lower tips (13). This particular provision provides the canvas with a certain rigidity and consistency of shape. The sliding aspect of the canvas (41) allows it to be opened and closed, providing flexibility of use. Bottom casters (38) slide in the groove (17) of the main extrusion profile (32) to allow the opening/closing movement (see FIG. 22). Referring to FIG. 14, the flexible rods (members of the second type) (45) inserted in the bottom tips (13) of the canvas (41) have guide tips (46) of eyelet type which slide on a taut cable (or a guide) (51) so as to guide the canvas (41) and avoid twisting as much as possible during movement The flexible rods inserted in the bottom tips also serve to structure the canvas (41) with a flow curve that guides water to the sides of the structure to prevent accumulation and ensure the structure is completely waterproof. FIG. 32B illustrates the distance (A) between two lower tips of the canvas, the height (B) between an upper tip and a lower tip of the canvas (41), as well as the angle (C) between the two slopes generated by a fold. FIG. 33 illustrates the flow curve (D) which extends the entire width (E) of the canvas (41).
  • The canvas (41) can be entirely assembled and dismantled, it is assembled by inserting rigid tubes (35) and flexible rods (45) in pockets provided for this, to then be slid into the structure (23) which requires no dismantling. Since the project is based on a modular principle, options must be installable after assembly of the structure (41). The sliding principle of the canvas (41) could function following other cable principles, such as weighted, or a crank system and benefit from a gutter system located at the ends of the bottom tips (13), which redirects water there thanks to the flow curves created by the flexible rods (45) to collect water.
  • Absorption Device (36)
  • Referring now to FIGS. 22 and 23, to allow for smooth opening/closing of the canvas (41), an “anti-twist” device was developed. This device offers a margin of twisting which does not block sliding of the bottom casters (38), if the canvas (41) has been operation in an uneven manner. The absorption principal is characterized, e.g. by sliding tubes (36) at the ends of the bottom tubes (35) on which casters (38) are installed through threaded tips (37) and screws (39). These sliding tubes (36) allow the necessary extension of tubes (35) during twisting to avoid any blockage (see in particular FIGS. 23A, 23B and 32C). The absorption device, comprising elements 36 to 39, is installed on the canvas (41) prior to installation on the structure (23). One of the advantages of the absorption device is in its simplicity of assembly, low number of parts and autonomous function which does not require particular maintenance or use. Use of the product is intuitive for the user with simple devices for use.
  • This absorption device can, according to a variant of the invention, be based on one of the different mechanical principles, such as long screws (39) that would allow side movement of the casters (38) and would not require a sliding tube (36 a), as shown in FIGS. 24B and 24B.
  • Another principle explored with success was the use of larger casters which would offer more play once inserted into the groove of the main profile, as illustrated in FIGS. 25A and 25B.
  • Modularity
  • The very great modularity of the invention structures allows for the creation of different varieties of shelters.
  • The concept starts with a base structure (23) which is the ALFA composition. This composition of tubular lengths (32) and connectors (25-26-27) is the basis of the shape and functionality of the project.
  • This composition of parts can create infinite lengths and different geometric forms. To obtain the desired final product adding the desired options is sufficient Each connector piece (25-26-27) must have homogeneous installation, i.e. they must be attached with the same bolts at the same level. For example, at the foot of a gazebo (33) which is attached to the ground, can also be installed on the horizontal beam (14) and attached to a wall (11). Some connectors of different shapes can be installed at any end of the structure and therefore extend the structure itself in several different directions (see for example FIGS. 11, 18A, 18B, 19A and 19B).
  • Each designed option must be easily installed on the structure (23) both with the initial installation and as a retrofit. This means permitting installation of a new option or a new type of roof on the base structure, without altering the components of the structure (23) and even without taking it apart. Each option and complementary accessory is designed with this purpose. Moreover, each option and each accessory must advantageously be able to be shipped by courier and therefore must be maximized to reduce costs and complexity of installation for the consumer. The product can be installed temporarily since it is very quick to install and dismantle. It can also be installed permanently, in particular because the product is of commercial quality.
  • The vertical and horizontal members [see, e.g. feet (15) and beams (14)] can be identical. Thus, the structure members, support members cross members and vertical rods can be used interchangeably. In fact, all these parts can be identical and thus a given piece can be used either as a support member, or as a cross member or as a vertical rod.
  • Tension Mechanisms for the Retractable Canvas (41)
  • The retractable canvas (41) is comprised of a waterproof or non-waterproof fabric, with aluminum rods as support The flexible rods (members of the second type) (45) in fibreglass provide shape and body to the canvas (41). The aluminum tubes (members of the first type) (34) have casters (38) at the ends and roll in the groove (17) of the extrusion (32). Opening and closing of the canvas can be done in several ways. As side curtains or side screens (6) (see, e.g. FIG. 31): to block the view or the wind or simply for aesthetics. Can be opened manually, automatically with a remote, or with a press button or controlled by a cell phone or motor.
  • Operation can be manual: with one or two hands, the operator can detach the canvas (41) and slide it (41) manually, as illustrated in FIG. 2, in which the canvas is in a folded position. With the anti-blocking system (36) the rods (support members) (35) do not have to be perfectly aligned in parallel. The rods will still slide. Several options are possible to keep the canvas in the extended position. For example, attachment tubes (47) positioned at each end of the canvas can include a device, for example hooks, to attach the canvas to the cross members. Hooks can be attached to fasteners that are described herein. Each fastener, being attached in a groove of a cross member, is comprised of a support which includes an eyelet in which the hook has been inserted (e.g. see FIG. 38—a hook or snaphook has been attached in an eyelet).
  • In another example, the attachment tube does not include a device but is secured to the cross members with a clip held by the fastener (22), which is in turn attached to the groove of the cross members (see for example FIGS. 36 and 37).
  • Opening and closing by pulling or rolling a cable: For example, referring to FIG. 12, one or more cables (10) can be installed in the structure (23), either by using the grooves of the profiles (17) or the centre of the profiles (16) (see FIG. 30) to run the cable. An external principle of the pulleys could also be added to the system and operated using counterweights (43) positioned inside profiles (32), grooves (17) or, again, exterior to the structure and/or springs (44) hidden or not in the structure (23) (see FIG. 13). The action of pulling or rolling a cord can both open and close in the 2 cases.
  • Fastener (22)
  • With the goal of adapting several options to the structure (23) invention hardware was developed specially for the structure. Referring to FIGS. 26, 27 and 34 to 38, the attachment system (or means of fastening) (22) is designed to adapt to all attachment and installation needs and defines the shape of the principal profile (32) of the structure (23). In the case of the retractable canvas (41), the fasteners (22) can act as supports for the guide cable tension system (51).
  • Fasteners can be comprised of an extrusion profile, for example with a right angle (19), which is installed outside of the groove (17) of the principal profile (32) and which acts as a support for the options/accessories. For example, the fastener (3) can include a notch (5) to hold and support an object, such as an attachment member (47) of a canvas (FIGS. 35 to 37). For example, it is possible to insert a nut washer (4) between the screw and the nut (FIG. 35B). For example, the fastener (22) can include an eyelet (55) in which can be inserted a coupling element, e.g. a hook which can be connected to the canvas in order to support a flat canvas (FIG. 38).
  • This support is maintained by the T-nut (18) which is inserted inside the groove (17) (see FIG. 27A) and, once the assembly (means of attachment) (22) is screwed, makes a one-quarter turn to become blocked in the groove (17), providing pressure which fixes it in place while the screw is tightened (see FIG. 27B). The nut (18) includes a serrated surface allowing engagement by friction with an object to be fastened by the means of attachment The support (19) includes a serrated surface allowing frictional engagement with an object to be fastened by means of the attachment FIGS. 34A and 27B illustrate more particularly the proportions of the nut (18) next to a groove in a profile (32). The nut (18) is of a generally rectangular shape and has four corners. Two corners connected by a first diagonal are rounded and two corners connected by a second diagonal form right angles. The first diagonal includes a length G which is less than the second diagonal. The dimensions of the nut allow insertion in the groove, between the two edges of the groove (acting as retaining lips for the screw), since one of its sides is narrow, of a smaller dimension than the distance between the two edges. The groove comprises a width F which has a dimension approximately similar to the longest side H of the nut, greater than the length of the first diagonal connecting the rounded corners G but less than the length of the second diagonal connecting the right-angle corners. Thus the nut can be turned no more than 90 degrees only in one direction and then becomes blocked in the groove. The nut is then blocked since the length H prevents additional rotating due to its size and the nut is therefore blocked by frictional engagement with the groove.
  • The advantage gained by this principle is the possibility of inserting fasteners (22) (means of attachment) in the groove (17) of the structure (23) without the latter being disassembled.
  • For example, fasteners can be inserted in the grooves of the support members, cross members, as well as the vertical rods. Moreover, there is no need to screw anything at all directly into the profile (i.e. a support/cross member or a vertical rod).
  • The fastener (22) is also equipped with an anti-rotation strip (20) which allows it to stay parallel to the groove (17) at all times, thereby avoiding sliding from starting. The anti-rotation strip (20) includes one central part and at least one fin, preferably two fins located on both sides of the central part, forming a 90-degree angle with the central part The fins are next to the two side parts of the support, as illustrated in FIGS. 26A and 26B.
  • Upon installation of the means of attachment (22) in groove (17), the means of attachment (22) is pre-assembled, meaning that the screw (21) is inserted in the opening (52) of the strip (20), then in the opening (53) of the support (19) and finally in the threaded opening (54) of the nut (18). The nut (18) and a part of the screw (21) are then inserted in the groove (17) by placing the nut (18) parallel to the direction of the groove (17) (see FIG. 27A). The screw is then tightened, which potentially caused the 90-degree rotation of the nut which has tightened the lips or edges of the groove (17) (see FIG. 27B). A user may easily do all this and installation does not necessarily require the use of two hands by the user. Indeed, the user can then fasten an attachment (22) in a groove (17) without being obliged to insert fingers into the groove or being obliged to insert another object to hold the attachment (22) during installation since the configuration of the fastener allows the user to use one hand to quickly install it by making a single quarter turn (90-degree rotation) in order to fasten the attachment (22) to the ends of the groove (17). The configuration of the attachment (22) is called “quick fit”.
  • Several varieties of fasteners (22) providing the same function are envisaged: nut without rotation which must be inserted by the ends of the structure profiles or permanent hardware requiring a piercing of the structure profiles.
  • For example, fastener (22) may be used to attach guide cables. In this case, it is possible to attach two fasteners (22) in the grooves of the feet of the structure (or vertical rods) at a height corresponding to that of the bottom tips of the canvas.
  • For example, two fasteners can be attached in the grooves of the structure fee (or vertical rods) at a desired height in order to install a device to hold a curtain support.
  • Referring again to FIG. 26, several types of screws (21) are envisaged. The screw has a threaded rod (not indicated in FIG. 26B) and a head, for example a head comprising a six-sided opening (for an Allen key).
  • Motorization: With the help of a motor, closing and opening of the roof and/or side curtains can be done by a manual switch, remote control or cell phone applications.
  • Possible Variations of the Principal Profile of the Structure
  • The principal extrusion profile of the structure (32) was developed as part of the project to permit adaptation to different needs of the project Its symmetrical form is justified by the modular aspect which is required of the structure (23), like the insertion grooves (17) which are present on each face. However, while the current profile fulfils its requirements, it could still have different shapes which would respond to the needs of the structure (23).
  • The centre of the extrusion (16) currently uses a square shape which holds the connector rods (28), its form is defined by that of the connectors (25-26-27). However, the connectors could use circular branches (28), thereby causing the centre of the profile (16) to have a circular or other shape, as illustrated in FIG. 29.
  • Referring again to FIG. 29, the groove (17) on each face of the profile (32) can also be subject to different variations in size, proportions and even form. Since this form acts as a support to the fasteners (22) its form depends on that of the T-nuts (18) which can also change. The primary aspect of the groove are the edges which act as retaining lips for the nut (18) as well as its opening, which must allow for the latter to be inserted. However, the dimensions and proportions of the groove (17) and their edge can change yet maintain their function, certain aspects of the groove (17) such as the bevels or the rectangular shape can also be modified as long as the retaining edges are still present.
  • Various aspects of the extrusion (32) were established according to technical or manufacturing constraints or for solidity or the price of raw materials. Therefore, certain thicknesses could vary to increase/reduce solidity and manufacturing costs, the shape of corners could also change to accommodate certain equipment The profile principal is based on its functioning not its shape and dimensions.
  • This invention was described above in reference to a preferred mode of creation of the invention. Of course, the production which has just been described is only for the purposes of illustration and is in no case restrictive, various modifications can be made to the different objects of which it is comprised without going beyond the scope of this invention.

Claims (20)

1. Accordion-type folding canvas comprising:
a plurality of members of a first type, said members to be inserted into said canvas, said members of the first type comprising, at each end, a means for sliding or moving to be inserted into a structure, the said members of said first type having a sliding device so as to be able to modify their length during said sliding or movement, in this way preventing blocking,
a plurality of members of a second type, said members to be inserted into said canvas, said members of the second type being flexible so as to allow formation of a flow curve when said canvas is in an extended position.
two attachment members, to be inserted into said canvas and located on the ends of the canvas, said attachment members comprising a device allowing maintain said canvas in a deployed position,
said members of the first type and said members of the second type to be alternately arranged, in parallel, when they are inserted in the canvas, so as to form an “accordion” configuration, when the canvas is in a folded or extended position, said attachment members replacing said members of the second type in alternation at said ends of the canvas.
2. Accordion-type folding canvas comprising:
a plurality of members of a first type, said members to be inserted into said canvas, said members of the first type comprising, at each end, a means for moving to be inserted into a structure, the said members of said first type having a sliding device so as to be able to modify their length during said movement,
a plurality of members of a second type, said members to be inserted into said canvas, said members of the second type being flexible so as to allow formation of a flow curve,
two attachment members, to be inserted into said canvas and located on the ends of the canvas, said attachment members to be attached in a fixed manner to a structure in order to maintain said canvas in a deployed position, and
said members of the first type and said members of the second type to be alternately arranged in parallel when they are inserted in the canvas, so as to form an “accordion” configuration.
3. Folding canvas according to claim 2, in which said attachment members replace said members of the first type or second type in alternation at said ends of the canvas.
4. Canvas according to claim 1, in which said members of said first type are upper members and said members of said second type are lower members.
5. Canvas according to claim 1, in which said sliding device includes two cylinders, inserted one into the other.
6. Canvas according to claim 1, in which said sliding device includes two cylinders, inserted one into the other so that, if one end of one of said members of the first type is moved in an uneven fashion at its opposite end in relation to said structure during movement of the canvas in relation to said structure, said member of the first type will get longer thanks to said sliding device, thereby preventing blockage during movement of said canvas.
7. Canvas according to claim 1, in which said means of sliding or movement include casters.
8. Canvas according to claim 1, in which said members of said second type are connected together by at least one guide, to one of said ends of said members of said second type, at least one of said guides being arranged in a fashion generally perpendicular to said members of said second type.
9. Canvas according to claim 8, in which said members of said second type are connected together by two guides, one at each of said ends.
10. Canvas according to claim 9, in which said guides are cables inserted into eyelets located on said ends of said members of said second type.
11. Structure comprising:
a canvas as defined in claim 1; and
at least two support members, said support members each comprising at least one groove to receive said means of sliding or moving of said members of the first type of said canvas in order to maintain said canvas and allow it to move between a folded position and an extended position.
12. Structure according to claim 11, in which said support members comprise two support members connected together by two cross members in a fashion generally parallel to said members of the first and second type, said support members and said cross members forming a frame that maintains the canvas.
13. Structure according to claim 12, which also comprises at least two vertical rods allowing retention of said frame and said canvas at a desired height.
14. Structure according to claim 1, in which said cross members each include at least one groove.
15. Structure according to claim 1, in which said cross members each include at least one groove.
16. Structure according to claim 14, in which at least the two of said support members are interchangeable with said cross members.
17. Structure according to claim 15, in which at least the two of said support members are interchangeable with said cross members or with at least two of said vertical rods.
19. Structure according to claim 1 in which said support members, said cross members and said vertical rods are to be connected together using connectors, said connectors containing branches to be inserted into cavities of said support members, said cross members and/or said vertical rods, said connectors to be located at the corners of said frame and sized so that the branches are hidden inside said support members, said cross members and/or said vertical rods when they are inserted into them.
20. Structure according to claim 19, in which said connectors have three branches, one branch being positioned vertically and two branches being positioned horizontally, said horizontal branches forming a 90-degree angle between them and with said vertical branch.
