Abstract

A vacuum solar heat collector is provided that has a transparent envelope (10), a pipe (14) that passes through the envelope (10), and a cap (18) through which the pipe (14) passes gas-tightly into and/or from the envelope (10), an adhesive e.g of metal-filled epoxy resin gas-tightly sealing the cap (18) to the envelope (10). In a preferred construction, a metallic tube (24) leading from an internal space of the collector envelope (10) via a second cap (22) also adhesively sealed to the envelope (10) has a region that is permanently deformed by compression to provide a gas-tight seal for said collector. The collector is inexpensive to manufacture from plain glass tubing and provides good heat collection efficiency at internal pressures similar to or less demanding than that for a mass-produced Dewar flask.
