IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO VEHICLE EXTERNAL
REARVIEW MIRRORS
It is well known that in the commercial vehicle industry that trucks with large legal size rear view mirrors are in a lot of cases subjected to a considerable amount of vibration.
The normal rear view mirror is constructed of a plurality of parts each capable of their own individual vibrations.
According to the present invention there is provided a rear view mirror chassis with integral arms manufactured Tom gas or chilled water assisted plastic injection moulding. Ibis process tends to push the plastic to the walls of the moulding tool thus producing a lightweight but strong hollow section throughout the moulding this helps in reducing vibration. Additional stiffness can be obtained by adding glass particles such as strands via the injection.
This process avoids plurality of parts such as mirror body tubular arm and means of attachment.
Also this process avoids restrictions of tubular anns by allowing aesthetically pleasing and strong hollow section arms to be used.
The process and material allows the design to be warm to the touch needing no surface finish such as painting, corrosion Dee and puts the strength where it is required. The hollow sections may also be filled with rigid foam for additional strength.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by the way of an example.
Figure 1 shows a typical standard tubular arm mirror design in perspective with cutaway sections for clarity.
Figure 2 shows a gas or water assisted injection plastic moulded chassis in perspective.
-2 Figure 3 shows a chassis partly cut away to show a foam filling.
Figure 4 shows a typical diagrammatic arrangement for gas or water assisted injection moulding.
Referring to the drawing Fig 1. Shows a standard conventional mirror body lO with mirror glass support Fame 13 and tubular aim 11 attached via support clipl2.Fig 2. Shows the proposed integral designed chassis 14 with it's mirror glass support holes 15. Fig 3.Is the same design as Fig 2. but a cutaway section shows the foam filling 16 within the hollow sections.
A typical example in diagram form Fig 4. of how two injections take place. Ejection of plastic 17 injection of chilled water or gas 18.

Claims (4)
