Abstract

239,079. Spies, P. H. F., and Rouse, W. C. Nov. 17, 1924. Tapping.-A nut tapping-machine has a curvedshank tap 40 surrounded by a rotating sleeve 15 which receives nuts transferred by an arm 20 from a forming and cutting-off machine. The arm 20 carries a spring-pressed plunger 36, Fig. 5, which projects partly into the untapped nut and a spring-pressed feeding sleeve 28 which forces the nut on the tap. The arm is attached to a shaft 21, reciprocated axially by a cam 25 and a spring 26 and oscillated to move the arm from the cutting-off to the tapping-machine by a cam and spring-actuated lever 30. The cam 25 is rotated at double the speed of the. oscillating cam, and both cams are designed to give a dwell at each machine. An adjustable collar 60 limits reciprocating movement in one direction. The sleeve 15, which is hexagonal internally, is rotated by a pulley 18 and the nuts pass over the curved shank 41 into jaws 44 which hold the shank during cutting, but are released to allow a nut to drop by means of pivoted links 48 actuated by an elliptical groove in a cam 52 oscillated by gearing 57 slidably keyed to the shaft 21. Oil is supplied to the tap at 58 and holes 19 in the sleeve 15 allow cuttings to escape.
