Abstract

238,960. Katzenmeyer, J. A. May 29, 1924. Rolling tubes; skew rolling; rolling-mandrels. -In a continuous rolling-mill for reducing rods, tubes &c., reducing elements are adapted to rotate in a plane substantially parallel to the flow of the article to be reduced at a speed higher than that of the article, the material being caused to flow both longitudinally and transversely. In Fig. 1 each of the stands of reducing elements A, B, C consists of rotating heads 1 each mounted on a shaft 2 driven either from a common shaft 3 through bevel gearing or, as shown in the lower part of the Figure, by independent electromotors 6. The reducing heads preferably comprise a number of hard metal balls 7, Fig. 2, mounted in a raceway concentric with the axis of rotation of the head and each stand may consist of two, three or more heads arranged round the work as described in Specification 238,326. The action of the heads itself causes rotary and longitudinal movement of the work but preferably the work movements are controlled by means of disc rolls 16 arranged in front of the first reducing-stand and driven from a motor 21. A fluid pressure motor 22 serves to adjust the rolls 16. At the delivery end of the mill the work movements are regulated by inclined rolls 23. The tube may be carried on a mandrel which engages a tubular member 26 mounted in a thrust block 27. In some cases the mandrel may be stepped as shown in Fig. 5 or the mandrel may be altogether dispensed with. In a further modification, Fig. 2, reducing heads 29 may be arranged at diametrically opposite sides of the work and may rotate in planes parallel, or nearly so, with the work axis. The reducing heads coact with inclined rolls 30 which control the movements of the work in addition to assisting in the reducing action. Specification 238,959 also is referred to.
