Abstract

A latch for retaining, in use, two components 2,3 in engagement with one another. The latch comprises an engaging part 4 for engaging with a surface of the first component and wings 6 for engaging with a surface of the second component. A rod 8 is connected to each wing via a respective strut 9, which, when pushed, in use, towards the second component, urges the wings apart from each other and towards the surface of the second component, so that the wings snap-engage with the surface of the second component to retain the first and second components between the wings and the engaging part.

Description

23881 50
LATCH This invention relates to a simple, snap-action operation wing latch.
5 Latches have been used for many years in many applications. However there is still a need for improving latches in order to decrease manufacturing costs and increase reliability. For example, providing a simple design with a minimal number of parts would simplify 10 manufacture and minimise problems caused by loose parts.
The present invention aims to provide a latch that overcomes such manufacture and reliability problems.
According to the present invention there is provided a latch for retaining, in use, two components in engagement 15 with one another, the latch comprising: an engaging part for engaging with a surface of the first component; wings for engaging with a surface of the second component; and a rod, connected to each wing via a respective strut, which, when pushed, in use, towards the second component, urges 20 the wings apart from each other and towards the surface of the second component, so that the wings engage with the surface of the second component to retain the first and second components between the wings and the engaging part.
In a preferred latch, after the wings are urged into 25 engagement with the second component, in use, the wings lock in position due to overcentreing of the rod and struts. There is further provided a latch which is manufactured as a single piece moulding.
30 The latch may further comprise a handle attached to the rod.
The latch of the present invention is simple to manufacture and therefore low-cost. The advantage of having no loose parts also means it has reduced rattle and wear.
35 Furthermore it is simple to use and to lock into place with the overcentreing action.
The flexible wings mean that the latch can be fitted to a wide range of material thicknesses.
An example of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in 5 which: Figure 1 shows a plan perspective view of the latch in the open position; and Figure 2 shows a plan perspective view of the latch in the closed position, with two components being retained 10 between wings and a rim.
Figures 1 and 2 show a latch 1 according to the invention before and after it is, inserted into two components 2, 3 and locked into place. Referring to figure 1, the latch 1 has a rim 4 which engages with a surface 5 15 of the first component 2. Connected to the rim 4 are two wings 6 which, in the closed position (shown in figure 2), engage with a surface 7 of the second component 3. The wings 6 have ribs on them to increase flexibility. The wings 6 are urged towards the surface 7 of the second 20 component 3 by means of a rod 8 which is connected to the wings 6 via struts 9. The rod 8 has a handle 10 to make it easier to grip when pushing or pulling the rod 8 to close or open the latch. When the rod 8 is pushed towards the surface 7 of the second component 3, the struts 9 are urged 25 apart from each other, in time urging the wings 6 apart from each other. When the wings 6 come into engagement with the surface 7 of the second component 3, further movement of the rod 8 in the same direction causes the wings 6 to flex. The rod 8 and struts 9 overcentre to lock 30 the latch, and the two components 2,3 are retained between the wings 6 and the rim 4, held in place due to the compressive force induced into the struts 9.
To undo the latch 1, a pulling force is applied to the rod 8 in an opposite direction. This releases the locked 35 struts 9, causing the wings 6 to disengage from the surface 7 of the second component 3, releasing the latch 1.

Claims (5)

1. A latch for retaining, in use, two components in engagement with one another, the latch comprising: 5 an engaging part for engaging with a surface of the first component; wings for engaging with a surface of the second component; and a rod, connected to each wing via a respective strut, 10 which, when pushed, in use, towards the second component, urges the wings apart from each other and towards the surface of the second component, so that the wings engage with the surface of the second component to retain the first and second components between the wings and the 15 engaging part.
2. A latch according claim 1, wherein after the wings are urged into engagement with the second component, in use, the wings lock in position due to overcentreing of the rod 20 and struts.
3. A latch according to claim 1 or 2, which is manufactured as a single piece moulding.
25
4. A latch according to claim 1, 2 or 3, further comprising a handle attached to the rod.
5. A lock according to any preceding claim wherein the wings are flexible.
