Abstract

A protective sleeve is provided for sliding or clipping over the boom of a sailing vessel to protect those on board from head injuries. The sleeve is formed from a buoyant or inflatable material so that if necessary it can be used as a lifesaving device. The sleeve may incorporate a grab handle and a webbing strap to assist in the lifting of a person from the water. The sleeve may have a waterproof high visibility cover and may also incorporate a hollow tubular extrusion which houses a flag and a flare.

BOOMBOUY SAFETY UNIT
TECHNICAL DISCRIPTION
The Device.
A CUSHIONED COLLAR FITTED TO THE BOOM OF A SAILING VESSEL
TO PROTECT FROM HEAD INJURY AND HAVING A SECONDARY USE
AS AN EMERGENCY FLOAT TO THROW TO A MAN OVERBOARD.
The Method.
TO ENCASE FOAM OR COMPRESSED AIR IN A SPRUNG SLEEVE THAT
CLIPS OVER THE PART OF THE SAILING BOATS BOOM THAT
CREATES THE GREATEST THREAT TO HEAD INJURY.
A LIGHTWEIGHT POLYURETHANE EXTRUSION OF OVAL OR ROUND
PIPE FORMED SHAPE WITH A CONTINUOUS OPENING ALONG THE
TOP TO ALLOW THE UNIT TO BE FITTED AND REMOVED QUICKLY
WHILE STILL RETAINING A FIRM GRIP TO THE BOOM, THIS WILL
CREATE THE SPRUNG BACKBONE OF THE UNIT.
THIS EXTRUSION WILL BE ENCASED IN A LAYER OF LIGHTWEIGHT
IMPACT RESISTANT HIGH DENSITY BOUYANT FOAM WITH A HIGH
VISIBILITY WATERPROOF COATING.
AN ORALLY INFLATED JACKET COULD ALSO BE USED AS THE
SAFETY COVER ( AS USED IN SWIMMING ARMBANDS), THIS ALSO
WOULD HAVE A HIGH VISABILITY COVERING, THIS WOULD BE
LIGHTER AND AIMED SPECIFICALLY AT THE YACHT AND DINGHY
RACING MARKET WHERE LESS WEIGHT IS A REQUIREMENT.
THE BOOMBOUY WILL INCORPORATE A GRAB HANDLE AT THE
AFTER ( BACK) END FOR QUICK REMOVAL AND DISPATCH TO THE
MAN OVERBOARD.
THE BOOMBOUY WILL INCORPORATE A SMALL SECTION PIPE IN
THE BOTTOM OF THE POLYURETHANE EXTRUSION BACKBONE
WITH SCREWED WATERPROOF PLUGS AT EACH END, ONE END WILL
HOLD A HIGH VISIBILITY FLAG TO REMOVE AND WAVE, THE OTHER
END WILL HOLD AN ORANGE DISTRESS FLARE FOR EASIER
DETECTION IN HEAVY WEATHER.
l B001\/lBOUY SAFETY UNIT TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION CONTINUED
The Method Cont; AN OPTION FOR THE UNIT IS TO FIT A CONTINUOUS WEBBING
STRAP WITH A LOOP AT EACH END FOR THE UNITS QUICK
REMOVAL AND DISPATCH AT EACH END, THIS STRAP COULD HAVE
SUFFICIENT STRENGTH TO LIFT THE MAN OVERBOARD OUT OF THE
WATER BY HAVING THE MAN OVERBOARD FOLD HIS BODY OVER
THE BOOMBOUY AND LIFTING FROM EACH LOOP END.
