Description
- 1 - A ROAD VEHICLE SUSPENSION UNIT AND A METHOD OF
CONSTRUCTING A ROAD VEHICLE SUSPENSION UNIT
AND FITTING THE ROAD VEHICLE SUSPENSION UNIT
TO A ROAD VEHICLE
The present invention relates to a road vehicle suspension unit.
Most road vehicle suspension units comprise a 10 wheel hub, upper and lower pivotable suspension arms connecting the wheel hub to a vehicle body, and a spring and damper connectable between the unsprung mass of the wheel hub and the sprung mass of the road vehicle body. Usually the suspension units are each 15 specific to a particular road vehicle and in particular the manner in which the inboard ends of the suspension arms are connected to the sprung mass of the road vehicle. Thus considerable design efforts are expended in designing suspension units each time a 20 road vehicle is designed and there is little cost saving in carrying over parts of a suspension unit from one road vehicle to another.
The present invention provides in a first aspect 25 a suspension unit for a road vehicle which is pre assembled prior to attachment to a road vehicle structure and which comprises: a wheel hub; a first mount attachable to the road vehicle 30 structure; a second mount attachable to the road vehicle structure at a position spaced below the first mount; an upper suspension arm arrangement connecting the wheel hub to the first mount) and 35 a lower suspension arm arrangement connecting the
- 2 wheel hub to the second mount; wherein: the upper and lower suspension arm arrangements are pivotally attached to both the wheel hub and the first and second mounts whereby when the suspension 5 unit is attached to the road vehicle structure then the wheel hub can pivot about the first and second mounts to move vertically relatively to the road vehicle structure.
10 The present invention provides in a second aspect a method of constructing a road vehicle suspension unit and fitting the road vehicle suspension unit to a road vehicle comprising: assembly at a first location of the road vehicle 15 suspension unit by connecting an upper suspension arm assembly between a wheel hub and a first mount and connecting a lower suspension arm assembly between the wheel hub and a second mount, the upper and lower suspension arm assemblies having inboard ends 20 pivotally connected respectively to the first and second mounts and the upper and lower suspension arm assemblies having outboard ends both pivotally connected to the wheel hub; and transporting the assembled road vehicle 25 suspension unit to a second location and at the second location fixing the first and second mounts to a road vehicle structure using mechanical fasteners.
The present invention provides in a third aspect 30 a method of constructing a plurality of road vehicle suspension units and fitting the road vehicle suspension units to a plurality of road vehicles comprising: assembly at a first location of the plurality of 35 road vehicle suspension units, each suspension unit
- 3 - being assembled by connecting an upper suspension arm assembly between a wheel hub and a first mount and connecting a lower suspension arm assembly between the wheel hub and a second mount, the upper and lower 5 suspension arm assemblies having inboard ends pivotally connected respectively to the first and second mounts and the upper and lower suspension arm assemblies having outboard ends both pivotally mounted to the wheel hub; and 10 transporting the plurality of assembled road vehicle suspension units to a plurality of different locations and at such locations attaching the road vehicle suspension units to a plurality of differently configured road vehicle structures, each suspension 15 unit being attached to a road vehicle structure by fixing the first and second mounts to the road vehicle structure using mechanical fasteners.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention 20 will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a suspension unit according to the invention.
In the figure there can be seen a wheel hub 10.
25 Ghosted in the figure is a wheel 11 mounted on the wheel hub 10. The wheel 11 is rotatable about a spindle journalled in bearings in the wheel hub 10. A brake disc 12 is rotatable with the wheel and a brake calliper 13 is mounted on the wheel hub 10.
The wheel hub 10 is shown for a steerable undriven wheel. A steering arm 14 is connected to the wheel hub 10 to pivot the wheel hub 10 about a generally vertical axis 15 running through two pivot 35 joints, one being shown at 16. The pivot joints e.g.
16 connect short arms e.g. 17 fixed to the wheel hub 10 with an upper suspension arm 17 and a lower suspension arm 19. The short arms e.g. 16 are pivotally connected to the wheel hub 10 and the 5 suspension arms 17, 18 are pivotally connected to mounting plates 20, 21 (described later) so that the unsprung mass of the wheel hub 10 can move vertically up and down relative to the sprung mass of the road vehicle. The inboard end of the upper suspension arm 18 is pivotally connected to a mounting plate 20 which is designed to be attached to a structural member of the road vehicle to extend in a generally vertical plane.
15 The upper suspension arm 18 is a wishbone arm, the bifurcated ends of which are pivotally connected to the mounting plate 20. Also pivotally connected to the mounting plate 20 is an inboard end of a combined spring and damper unit 22. The outboard end of the 20 combined spring and damper unit 22 is pivotally connected to the wheel hub 10.
The inward end of the lower suspension arm 19 is pivotally connected to the mounting plate 21 which is 25 designed to be attached to a structural member of the road vehicle to extend in a generally horizontal plane. The lower suspension arm 19 is a wishbone arm, the bifurcated ends of which are pivotally connected to the mounting plate 21. A bracket is provided on 30 the mounting plate 21 in order to provide support for a torsion bar 22 which extends transversely across the road vehicle and is connected at each end to a wheel hub via a lower suspension arm.
35 In a method according to the invention a
s - suspension unit is constructed independently of a land vehicle. The wheel hub 10, the suspension arms 17, 18, the mounting plates 19, 20 and the spring and damper unit 21 are all connected together. Then the pre 5 assembled unit is secured to the vehicle simply by attaching the mounting plates 20 and 21 to the vehicle structure; then connecting a fluid supply to the brake calliper 13; connecting the steering arm 14 of the vehicle to the wheel hub 10; and mounting the torsion 10 bar 22 on the mounting plate 21 and connecting the outboard end of the torsion bar 22 to the wheel hub 10. The mounting plate 20 is fixed by mechanical fasteners such as bolts to a generally vertical surface of the vehicle structure and the mounting 15 plate 21 is fixed by mechanical fasteners such as bolts to a generally horizontal surface of the vehicle structure. The mounting plates 20 and 21 allow flexibility of points of attachment on the vehicle structure itself so that the pre-enabled unit can be 20 used for many different vehicles.
