Abstract
A driving tool (Figure 2, 2) and fastener combination where the driver blade (Figure 2, 1) engages with the slot of the fastener head such that an attractive force is provided between the driver and the fastener during the operating process that increases with the force applied. Preferably the driver and corresponding fastener slot are tapered, and have a "double diamond" construction. A ridge (Figure 6, 3) may be provided in the centre of the fastener slot.
Description
NON-SLIP SCREWDRIVER SYSTEM
The invention relates to a screwdriver and screw combination which precludes slipping of the driver in the screw head and requires no downward pressure.
There are many types of fixing/driving combinations, but all suffer from various disadvantages such as slipping, the need for exact sizes or the need for downward pressure to maintain engagement of driver with screw.
An objective of this invention is to provide a screwdriver/screw combination which is reasonably flexible in the matching of screw size to driver size, virtually slip proof and requires no downward force for insertion or extraction.
Accordingly, this invention provides a driver and screw that engage firmly, even when the driver and screw size are not an exact fit, increasing the force of engagement as the screw is driven in either direction.
The driver's head will ideally be made of a metal resistant to bending, scratching or deformation, as the shape of the driving surface is critical. The screw material can be of any metal appropriate to the usage.
A preferred embodiment ofthe invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. Features have been exaggerated to illustrate the principals clearly.
FIGURE 1 shows an end view of the driver head FIGURE 2 shows one side view of the driver head FIGURE 3 shows the other view of the driver head FIGURE 4 shows a ad representation of the driver head FIGURE 5 shows one side view of the screw head FIGURE 6 shows the other side view of the screw head FIGURE 7 shows the way the driver head and slot engage
Referring to figure 1, the end of the screwdriver blade is in the shape of two diamonds. The maximum width of the diamonds is such that the blade will fit into the screw slot from on top.
Referring to figures 2 and 3, The blade (1) slopes away to the driver's shaft (2). The diamond shape enables the blade to rotate within the screw slot until its edges engage under the screw slot's edges. At this point, the diamond's edges will ideally be parallel to the screw slot and will engage all along the edge as in figure 7. The slope of the screw slot edges ensures that the blade cannot slip up and out of the screw slot.
Referring to figures 2, 4, 5 and 6, the centre ridge in the screw slot engages with the cut out in the centre of the blade such that the blade cannot slip out of the slot sideways As greater turning power is exerted, so the sloping edges force the blade more securely into the screw slot.
The slope has been exaggerated for illustrative purposes. In practice a slight slope will be sufficient to ensure that the torque will generate the necessary downward force for continued engagement of driver and screw.
Note that the screwdriver can also be used on ordinary slotted screws with less chance of slipping as the force will be exerted at the bottom of the slot.
Claims (9)
1 A driving tool and fastener combination which engage together in use so that driving or undoing the fastener provides an attractive force between the driver and fastener Bus ensuring continued engagement.
2 A driving tool and fastener combination, as claimed in claim 1 where the fastener comprises a threaded shaft and driven head.
3 A driving tool and fastener combination, as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 where the driving tool comprises a grip or handle, a shaft and a driving head.
4 A driving tool and fastener combination as claimed in any preceding claim where the driving head of the driving tool comprises a shaped blade and the fastener's driven head contains a slot where the tool's driving head engages.
5 A driving tool and fastener combination as claimed in any preceding claim where the slot in the fastener's head becomes wider deeper into the slot.
6 A driving tool and fastener combination as claimed in any preceding claim where the driving head of the driving tool engages in the wider part of Be fastener's slot as the fastener is driven.
7 A driving tool and fastener combination as claimed in any preceding claim where a ridge in the centre of the screw slot may engage with a groove in the driver blade.
8 A driving tool and fastener combination as claimed in any preceding claim which is made from metal, -plastics material or wood, or from a combination of these materials.
9 A driving tool and Listener combination substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
