Abstract

238,648. McQuinn, T. H. June 10, 1924. Heating by electricity.-A water-heater of the kind comprising a single tube or a series of concentric tubes a of silicon or other refractory material covered externally with a resistance wire b or the like, is surrounded by a helically wound metal tube c in series with the tube or tubes a. The tubes a together with concentric tubes f, f<1>, f<2>, are supported between metal fittings d, d<1>, provided with inlet and outlet caps e, e<1>, and screwed into plates A held together by tie-bolts. In a modification, instead of the fittings d, d<1> being provided with recesses for the ends of the concentric tubes, they are provided with a plain face against which the ends of the tubes butt with the interposition of a suitably perforated washer. In a further modification, the end caps e, e<1> are dispensed with, the fittings d, d' being made in three parts by stamping or pressing. In this case one of the end fittings is provided with a plug connection and the tube f<2> is fitted with a water inlet branch. In both of these modification the plates A are replaced by flanges on the fittings d, d<1>. The heaters may be used as immersion heaters for tanks and the like and in such a case the outflow may be passed through a second heater.
