Abstract

A set of four dressmaker's seam gauges includes two straight pattern guides and two curved pattern guides. A further aid is also disclosed (fig 5).

PRODUCT: Dressmakers Seam Cause Dressmaking seams are invariably 5/8", or occasionally 3/8", wide. The present methods for marking these are 1. To mark with double threads at intervals along a seam line (this is the usually recommended way) but it is tedious and time-consuming.
2. To try to mark through the pattern, which tears it and makes it difficult to re-use.
3. Using an ordinary ruler which, since it means you must mm the ruler sideways to obtain the required measurement, only allows you to mark a small amount at a time.
The simple gadgets shown in the attached drawings are the correct width to start with and allow you to measure up to a length of 10" at a time. This length could be varied of course, but 10"seems a convenient amount to allow for quick working without the gadget becoming awkward to manage.
Items 3 and 4 are meant only as a general guide to help with curves, as neck and armhole shapes and sizes must vary with different patterns.
NOTE: These first four items are actually designed to be 1/16"narrower than the final measurements of 5/8"and 3/8"required, this is to allow room for the chalk, pencil or whatever else may be used for marking.
Item 5 is a simple aid to help with the other markings found on patterns.
The material to be used for these items will probably be clear coloured perspex, but when made-up some variation may prove more convenient to this material or to the depth or length of the items. However the basic design and, of course, the width, would remain the same.
/-/-/-/-/- I do a lot of dressmaking myself, and look forward to saving much time and nuisance. I think these gauges will be cheap and easy to make.

  1. CLAIMS DRESSMAKERS SEAM GAUGE Comprising two straight and two curved strips of plastic or perspex (whichever proves most suitable) which will give exact measurements for a dressmakers guide when pattern cutting.
    As shown in drawings attached to the original application.
