Abstract

A coupling unit to couple components of a steering column for a vehicle, the coupling unit incorporating a resilient member to absorb vibration between the components. The unit can comprise first and second plates (1,2) with an intermediate layer (3) of elastomeric material. One plate is designed to connect with a pinion and the other plate is designed to form part of a universal joint.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
COMPONENT COUPLING UNIT FOR STEERING COLUMN This invention relates to a component coupling unit for a steering column for a vehicle.
Coupling units for vehicle steering columns are well known and usually include a yoke to accept part of a universal joint for a steering column, whilst another part of the coupling unit is adapted to receive a pinion, for example.
One task to meet is to achieve a form of miniaturisation in order to obtain a compactness of components in the region of the vehicle steering column and its supports and mountings.
Another factor to be taken into account is the need to absorb vibrations transmitted through the steering column assembly.
According to the present invention, there is provided a coupling unit to couple components of a steering column for a vehicle, the coupling unit incorporating a resilient member to absorb vibration between the components.
The coupling unit may include first and second plates joined to one another by an intermediate layer of resilient material.
The resilient material may be elastomeric material such as rubber.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
The resilient material may be bonded to the first and second plates to join the plates.
The resilient material layer may be in the form of a disc and adjacent faces of the respective plates may be correspondingly profiled.
One of the plates may be in the form of a flanged yoke to accept part of a universal joint for the steering column.
The other plate may carry a device for connecting a pinion to it.
At least one aperture can be provided in each of the first and second plates, through which apertures a corresponding pin or lug passes in order to act as a fail-safe rotational drive device in the event of failure of the bonding of the resilient material.
The or each pin or lug is itself surrounded by resilient material so as to inhibit transmission of vibration from one plate to the other plate.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the single figure, which shows a diagrammatic perspective view of a coupling unit to couple components of a steering column for a vehicle.
The drawing shows the coupling unit with a first plate 1, a second plate 2 and an intermediate layer 3 of
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
elastomeric material such as rubber bonded to the facing surfaces of the first and second plates 1 and 2.
The plate 1 carries a pair of lobes 4 which form a round flanged yoke to accept a universal joint (not shown).
The plate 2 carries a connector 5 by means of which a pinion (not shown) can be connected to the coupling unit, the connector 5 being tightened about a free end of the pinion.
The intermediate layer 3 of elastomeric material such as rubber is bonded and by such means rotational drive through the coupling unit from one side to the other can be transmitted whilst acting to absorb vibrations between the two sides of the coupling unit.
To ensure continuation of the transmission of rotational drive through the coupling unit in the event of failure of the bonding of the intermediate layer 3 to the plates 1 and 2, lugs or pins 6 pass through respective apertures 7 in the plates 1 and 2, the lugs or pins 6 themselves being surrounded in the elastomeric material to inhibit transfer of vibration between the plates 1 and 2.
An advantage of the present coupling unit is illustrated by the dimension"A"in the drawing, which shows that the basic plate assembly with its intermediate rubber layer and the yoke can produce a comparatively short and compact device to achieve the purpose required.
