Abstract

A wall-mounted moisture detector A includes a sensor lead B responsive to water at floor level. A manual test button is located on the side of the wall box A, which also houses a speaker for audible warning, a battery, and a low battery voltage audible warning device.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Moisture Notification Unit-Mk 1 Approximately eight years ago, the emersion tank serving my property failed (through excessive scaling'corrosion) causing water to leak though the pitted cylinder.
Undetected until too late, this caused excessive material damage to both the first and ground floors.
With the principle of'need'for early warning established for such an event; combined with other now'obvious'factors, e. g. unpredictable weather patterns (flooding/water ingress) and the enormous growth in domestic and commercial construction (poor/ faulty manufacturing, poor/lack of maintenance, lack of good workmanship, possible failure and even vandalism), the lack of simple, affordable and effective early detection/ notification of such an event became even more apparent.
The'purpose'of this invention is to provide an'early-waming'device to water ingress/ spread, be it natural (inclement weather/flooding), or man-made (leaking utility appliances, damaged pipes, or similar).
Not a preventative tool, it does afford an effective means of allowing those affected by such events to take the necessary action to safeguard their valued property (nonphysical structure)/belongings, i. e. furnishings and personal items.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
This invention is an aesthetically pleasing, easily installed and maintained independent box unit that is capable of high sensitivity to the presence of moisture, alerting the occupier of such'presence'at a very early stage so as to allow the necessary action to be taken to protect their valuables, furnishings and potentially, life.
A standalone, wall-mounted device, it's size, shape and finish would allow it to in-keep with that of most modem wall mounted fixtures, i. e. light switches, socket boxes, etc.
A pictorial overview will now be described with reference to the accompanying'Figures: FIGURE 1-shows the front view of a'fixed'Unit.
FIGURE 2-a side view (laid flat) showing the test push button, speaker and sensor lead.
FIGURE 3-an internal layout of the Unit showing location of battery, electronic mechanism located behind internal protective plate, front cover plate and front cover fixings.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
As shown in Figure 1, the plastic standard'surface'or flush fitting'single white box A is secured to an internal wall with the hand-moulded flexi sensor lead B running from underside of Unit to top of finished floor level.
Figure 2 shows the position of the Test button C and D, the Speaker (on the side).
Figure 3 depicts the opened box Unit with manual Test button mechanism C, cover plate fixings (galvanized screws) E, protective inner plate (access to internal circuit board and low battery sounder) F, cover plate G and 9V Battery H.

Claims (6)

CLAIMS 1. An easily installed and maintained surface mounted or recessed plastic moulded box unit with sensor lead and internal apparatus (electronic circuit board) that allows for the early detection and'notification' (via sounder) of unwanted moisture. 2. A Unit as Claim 1 that in addition has a manual Test'push'button. 3. A Unit as Claim 1 and 2 that has a'low'battery warning sounder. <Desc/Clms Page number 5> Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS
1. A no-nonsense installed and maintained device that provides early 'recognition'and'notification' (warning) of unwanted/excessive moisture to those areas determined for this application, be the source of wetness from a manmade piece of equipment/service or naturally brought about.
2. A device as Claim 1 that in addition has a manual test push button for periodic testing of the alarm sounder.
3. A device as Claims 1 and 2 that in addition has a'depleting'battery forewarning signal in the form of an audible and repetitive'tone'.
4. A device as Claims 1,2 and 3 that utilizes a self-moulding Feeler-com cable that comprises of 2 No. parallel fixed electrical conductors enclosed within a protective sheath; such providing the'closed-circuiting'response required to trigger the detection of moisture/wetness.
5. A device as Claims 1,2, 3 and 4 that has no override mechanism.
6. A device as Claims 1,2, 3,4 and 5 that has an audible demotion actuation, such operated via the test push button during the'activated' alarm phase.
