Abstract
Packaging for a product such as a puzzle or game comprises at least one viewing aperture (11, 12)in an exterior surface of the packaging (10) through which an interior of the packaging (10) can be viewed; and first (13) and second (14) transparent windows provided in the viewing aperture(s)(14). The first (13) and second (14) transparent windows are arranged such that when they are used to view the interior of the packaging (14) the first window (13) aligns with a first eye of the viewer and the second window (14) aligns with a second eye of the viewer. The first (13) and second (14) transparent windows have optical properties different to each other which enable the viewer to gain a three dimensional impression of a specially constructed two dimensional image provided inside the package. A third transparent window (15) admits light to facilitate viewing.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Packaging The present invention relates to packaging and, in particular, to packaging for a puzzle or a game.
Printed three dimensional images need to be viewed through special spectacles with two different coloured lenses. The special spectacles are usually included a sealed package along with e. g. a game or a puzzle. Thus any three dimensional images printed on the packaged product cannot be seen while the product is within the package and, in particular a purchaser cannot view the three dimensional image before purchasing.
The present invention provides packaging for a product comprising: at least one viewing aperture in an exterior surface of the packaging through which an interior of the packaging can be viewed; and first and second transparent windows provided in the viewing aperture (s) ; wherein the first and second transparent windows are arranged such that when they are used to view the interior of the packaging the first window aligns with a first eye of the viewer and the second window aligns with a second eye of the viewer; and the first and second transparent windows have optical properties different to each other which enable the viewer to gain a three dimensional impression of specially constructed two dimensional images.
A preferred embodiment of packaging according to the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a schematic view of the packaging.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
In the figure the packaging comprises a cardboard box 10 in which is packaged jigsaw pieces of a disassembled jigsaw puzzle. When assembled the jigsaw pieces form an assembled jigsaw puzzle which has printed on its surface an image which when viewed through special spectacles appears to be a three dimensional image. Such special spectacles generally have a green eyepiece and a red eyepiece so that when used different images are seen by the eyes of the wearer and a three dimensional effect generated.
The cardboard box 10 includes in a surface two viewing apertures 11 and 12. Covering the viewing aperture 11 is a first window 13 of a first colour , e. g. green, and covering the viewing aperture 12 is a second window 14 of a second colour, e. g. red, different to the first colour. The windows 13,14 could be designed to be part of the packaging independent from a pair of special spectacles included separately in the packaging. Alternatively the special spectacles could be attached to an interior surface so that its eyepieces form the windows 13,14 covering the viewing apertures 11,12. The spectacles would then be detachable from the interior surface when the packaging is opened for use by a purchaser.
Printed on a interior surface of the cardboard box 10 is a small version of the image printed on the surface of the jigsaw puzzle, such an image being aligned with the viewing apertures 11,12. Thus a purchaser can, without opening the box 10, use the windows 13,14 to view a three dimensional image (the image printed on the interior surface) which illustrates the image on the packaged jigsaw. This allows the purchaser to view an image of the packaged

product prior to purchase.
An illumination aperture 15 is provided in the top surface of the cardboard box 10 and is covered by a transparent window 16. The transparent window 16 allows light into the box 10 to illuminate the image printed on the interior surface of the box 10.
The windows 13,14 when covering the viewing apertures 11,12 are spaced apart from the image printed on interior surface of the cardboard box 10 by a distance sufficient to allow effective viewing of the image as a three dimensional image.
Whilst above the windows 13,14 differ in optical properties by being colour filters which each filter out a different colour from light transmitted therethrough, the windows 13,14 could differ in other ways. For instance, the windows could each be polarised filters allowing to pass only light of a particular plane polarisation, each window allowing to pass light with a plane polarisation different to that allowed to pass by the other window.
Claims (10)
- CLAIMS 1. Packaging for a product comprising: at least one viewing aperture in an exterior surface of the packaging through which an interior of the packaging can be viewed; and first and second transparent windows provided in the viewing aperture (s); wherein the first and second transparent windows are arranged such that when they are used to view the interior of the packaging the first window aligns with a first eye of the viewer and the second window aligns with a second eye of the viewer; and the first and second transparent windows have optical properties different to each other which enable the viewer to gain a three dimensional impression of specially constructed two dimensional images.
- 2. Packaging as claimed in claim 1 wherein a part of an interior surface of the packaging can be viewed through the first and second transparent windows and on the viewed interior surface part there is displayed an image which when viewed through the first and second transparent windows by a human viewer appears to the viewer to be a three dimensional image.
- 3. Packaging as claimed in claim 2 wherein the viewing aperture (s) and the viewed part of the interior surface are spaced apart by a distance sufficient to enable effective viewing of the displayed image as a three dimensional image.
- 4. Packaging as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein an illumination aperture is provided in<Desc/Clms Page number 5>the exterior surface of the packaging in which a third transparent window is provided spaced apart form the first and second windows, the third window admitting light into the interior of the packaging to facilitate viewing of the interior via the first and second transparent windows.
- 5. Packaging as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the first and second transparent windows differ in optical properties in that the first window is a colour filter filtering out light of a first colour and in that the second window is a colour filter filtering out light of a second colour different to the first colour.
- 6. Packaging as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the first and second transparent windows differ in optical properties in that the first window is a polarised filter allowing to pass light of a first range of plane polarisation and in that the second window is a polarised filter allowing to pass light of a second range of plane polarisation different to the first range.
- 7. Packaging as claimed in any one of the preceding claims containing packaged in the interior thereof spectacles having as eyepieces a pair of windows with the same optical properties as the first and second windows provided in the aperture (s) in the exterior surface of the packaging.
- 8. Packaging as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the first and second windows are eyepieces of spectacles attached to an interior surface of the packaging in a position in which the first and second<Desc/Clms Page number 6>transparent windows align with the viewing aperture (s), the spectacles being detachable from the packaging once the packaging is opened.
- 9. Packaging as claimed in any one of the preceding claims containing packaged in the interior thereof jigsaw pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, the jigsaw puzzle when assembled having an image displayed thereon which when viewed through suitable spectacles appears to the viewer to be a three dimensional image.
- lO. Packaging as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
