Abstract

A shelving system comprises a shelf mounting member A1 attached to a wall (W figure 2), a shelf member A2 and a co-operating means A7 and A8 for attaching the shelf member to the shelf mounting member, such that the co-operating means is hidden from view. The co-operating means may comprise a series of apertures A8 in the edge face of the shelf mounting member and shelf member respectively and pins or dowels A7 extending between the corresponding apertures of the shelf mounting member and shelf member such that the edges of the shelf mounting member and shelf member are butting against each other. The shelving system may also include an additional support means A3 extendable from a first mounting member to a second shelf mounting member which may be a flexible wire extending away from the wall at an angle. The additional support means may also include an anchoring point A4 and A5 on each shelf mounting member and an anchoring member (1 figure 4) to attach the additional support means to the anchoring point.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Improvements relating to shelving systems.
This invention relates to so-called concealed mounting of shelving of the kind suitable for securing to existing vertical walls or surfaces, in order to provide support for the shelf and to enable storage or display of items such as ornaments, books or equipment.
There are known shelving systems that employ concealed forms of support which overcome many of the disadvantages of shelving whose forms of support are visible.
Frequently however these shelving systems with concealed forms of support suffer from disadvantages which may limit their scope of application. These disadvantages include providing shelf support of insufficient strength . requiring a large minimum thickness of shelf in order, for example, to accommodate mounting devices requiring a large degree of wall penetration/disturbance into the supporting wall/surface in order to provide adequate fixing means for mounting devices.
A further characteristic of many of these concealed shelving systems is that they require a mounting member (a batten or plate with extending pins/dowels for example) mounted onto the supporting wall which is constructed of material different to that of the shelf member. A disadvantage of this is that during or as a result of changes in ambient temperature (the effects of central heating, for example) the mounting member expands and/or contracts at a rate different to the shelf member and shelf movement occurs.
The object of the present invention is to overcome or alleviate some or all of the aforesaid disadvantages.
y Accordingly, this invention comprises a mounting member attachable to a wall with a surface of the mounting member contacting the wall so that when in use the shelf member is carried by the mounting member in flush-mounted relationship to the wall.
This mounting member is made from the same material as the shelf, and includes pins or dowels at spaced intervals extending therefrom for engagement in corresponding slots or holes formed in the rear facing edge of the shelf member. A further characteristic of this invention is that all fixings, including the anchor points for
optional additional support (s), which advantageously combine (s) a dual purpose of providing additional shelf support with providing a'bookend'function, are effectively hidden from view and this integral feature thereby has an additional positive effect on the aesthetic appearance of the shelf.
The invention can be applied to various shelving configurations, including for example single or double length corner shelving. In all configurations one or more of the optional additional supports may be employed. In one preferred embodiment of the invention these additional supports are flexible and, for example, can be made of wire.
The invention will be more clearly understood with reference to the attached drawings; Figure 1 shows one shelving configuration to illustrate a practical and non-restrictive example of the invention; Figure 2 further illustrates the anchoring operation of flexible forms of support in this same example of the invention; Figure 3 further illustrates an example of a tightening lock washer arrangement in this same example of the invention.

Claims (16)

  1. Claims 1. A shelving system comprising a shelf mounting member attachable to a wall or vertical surface, a shelf member attachable to the shelf mounting member after the shelf mounting member has been attached to the wall, and co-operating means for attaching the shelf member to the shelf mounting member, wherein the system is configured such that, when the shelf member is attached to the shelf mounting member, the co-operating means are hidden from view.
  2. 2. A shelving system according to claim 1, wherein the co-operating means comprises corresponding apertures in an edge face of the shelf mounting member and the shelf member respectively and pins or dowels positionable so as to extend between an aperture in the shelf mounting member and a corresponding aperture in the shelf member with the shelf member and shelf mounting member abutting against each other.
  3. 3. A shelving system according to claim 1, wherein at least one hole extends through the mounting member to facilitate attachment of the mounting member to the wall, the arrangement being such that when the shelf member is attached to the shelf mounting member, the or each hole is hidden from view.
  4. 4. A shelving system according to any preceding claim, wherein the shelf mounting member and the shelf member are made from the same material.
  5. 5. A shelving system according to claim 4, wherein the pins or dowels are made from the same material as the shelf member and shelf mounting member.
  6. 6. A shelving system according to any preceding claim, including an additional support means extendable between a second shelf mounting member mounted to the wall or vertical surface spaced from the first shelf mounting member, and said shelf member.
    <Desc/Clms Page number 3>
  7. 7. A shelving system according to claim 6, wherein a second shelf member is attachable to the second shelf mounting member.
  8. 8. A shelving system according to claim 6 or 7, wherein the additional support means extends from the second shelf mounting member at an angle away from the wall or vertical surface towards the front edge of the first shelf member.
  9. 9. A shelving system according to any of claims 6 to 8, wherein the additional support means is flexible.
  10. 10. A shelving system according to claim 9, wherein the additional support means is made of wire.
  11. 11. A shelving system according to any of claims 6 to 10, including an anchoring point on each shelf mounting member and an anchoring member to attach the additional support means to the anchoring point.
  12. 12. A shelving system according to claim-11, wherein the anchoring points and anchoring members are hidden from view by the shelf member, when the shelf member is attached to the shelf mounting member.
  13. 13. A shelving system according to claim 12, wherein the anchoring point comprises a recess in the region of a hole used to facilitate attachment of the shelf mounting member to a wall or vertical surface, and the anchor comprises a lock washer receivable in the recess and retained therein by a screw used to attach the shelf mounting member to the wall or vertical surface through the hole, one end of the additional support member being clamped in the recess between the lock washer and the shelf mounting member by the screw.
  14. 14. A shelving system according to claim 13, wherein the lock-washer has a pair of openings therein through which the end of the support means is threaded.
    <Desc/Clms Page number 4>
  15. 15. A shelving system according to claim 13, wherein a slot extends vertically from the recess to an edge of the shelf mounting means to allow the additional support means to extend through it.
  16. 16. A shelving system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
