Abstract
An outer bearing race remover, used to withdraw an outer bearing race from a housing to which it is attached, comprises a sleeve 10, having at one end an outwardly projecting collar 14 on to which a pulling device is engaged, and at the other end, an outwardly projecting annular lip 16 and groove 12 which serves as an inner race. A bore 18 is provided within groove 12 so as to facilitate the insertion of ball bearings thereto. In use, the inner race groove 12 is aligned with a groove of an outer race and the ball bearings which are inserted thereto via bore 18 become trapped between the said grooves, providing a circular grip. The remover may be manufactured from mild steel and may be hardened for additional durability.

OUTER BEARING RACE REMOVER
This invention relates to a means to remove an outer race from a housing to which it has been friction secured. A bearing race comprises of an inner race namely a collar having an outward circumferential groove on an inner spindle or shaft, having an outer bearing race, namely a second collar having an inner circumferential groove friction secured in a housing, between which bearing races, when aligned to form a passageway, a series of bearings, for example ball bearings are positioned. Through use, the ball bearings and grooves wear and ball bearings fall out of the passageway.
After one ball bearing is lost from the race, the rest of the bearings start to disintegrate and eventually the outer and inner races are running without ball bearings, this means both remaining races (outer and inner) must be removed before a new bearing is fitted.
Very often a problem is that access to the outer race is restricted, such that removal is difficult.
The object of this invention is to obviate or mitigate the problem.
Accordingly, the present invention is means to remove an outer race from a housing comprising of a sleeve having at one end, a collar to which a pulling device can be engaged and at the other and an outwardly projecting annular lip whose inner race is grooved around the circumference to serve as an inner race and a bore being provided in the groove, whereby when the races are aligned ball bearings can be fed through the bore until the grooves are filled giving a positive grip in the race.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings which shows the sleeve of means to remove an outer race from a housing according to the present invention.
Referring to the drawings, means to remove an outer race from a housing comprises a sleeve (10) having at one end means, in the form of an outwardly projecting flange or collar (14) on which a pulling device (not shown) can be engaged, and at its other end an outwardly projecting annular lip (16) and groove (12) which serves as the inner race. A bore (18) is provided in the groove (12).
With the inner race on the sleeve (10) aligned with the outer race to form a passageway and a series of ball bearings (not shown) fed into the passageway through the bore (18) and if necessary the bore (18) plugged, the outer race (not shown) can be removed due to the provision of the grip between the outer race in the housing and the inner race on the sleeve, when the puller is engaged by means of an axial force provided, the outer race is simply removed.
If necessary, a dual sleeve can be provided on each side of the flange (14) the difference between the two sleeves being the diameters. This will allow the use of the one removal means to fit outer races of different diameters.
Variations and modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention described above.
Claims (7)
1. An outer bearing race remover is a tool used to withdraw an outer bearing race from a housing to which it has been friction secured.
2. A Remover as claimed in (1) is a sleeve having at one end a collar to which a pulling device can be engaged.
3. A Remover as claimed in (2) with a collar at one end and at its other end a groove around its circumference to serve as the inner race.
4. A Remover as claimed in (3) has an opening in the groove (inner race) into which ball bearings can be inserted.
5. A Remover as claimed in (4) when the groove in the inner race (tool) is aligned with the groove in the outer race, ball bearings when inserted will be trapped between the grooves providing a circular grip.
6. A Remover as claimed in (5) when the pulling device is applied an axial force is engaged between the housing and the tool, thus removing the outer race.
7. The outer bearing race remover is manufactured from mild steel and can be case hardened for durability.
